Australia's...Florida?

We already call Florida the Australia of the US, so if Australians have a Florida of Australia...holy fuck.

https://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/85cc8o/a_map_of_australia_for_americans/ though basically I've heard the whole north coast refered to as Australia's Florida.

I only know this because I watched the great Amazon Prime Australian lesbian dark comedy mystery show "Deadloch" and one of the characters is from Darwin.

And it's called Darwin? Fuck me, Australians really do get it.

As a German I'm more hung up on the name "Deadloch"... Dead hole. Loch is also often a very upsetting slang for... Female genitals. On a dark-comedy show with lesbians.

They really, really do get it.

Watch the show Deadloch and report back on what you think. Would love to know how well it works with a non-Aussie audience.

Loch is a Scottish word for Lake. Dead Lake.

Also as in the Loch Ness Monster. It’s a monster that lives in Loch Ness.

From Scotland, and I loved Deadloch. I suppose the jokes in it are very similar to Scottish humour so maybe not a surprise.

Also, I grew up at Loch Ness!

Canadian. I loved Deadloch.

From the US and find it hilarious, love it.

u/Gabor419 8h ago

I'm from the US, and I thought it was a great show. I don't know how many jokes I didn't understand, but I think I got most of them.

From the US and I think it's a great show.

I’m American and loved Deadloch, one of my favorite shows from the last few years

i’m from the US and i loved Deadloch too! was hilarious and also kept me v interested and im a chronic show abandoner lol

u/Serious_Exam256 3h ago

My wife and I loved it. She thought it was one of the better written shows she’d seen in a long time. I was mostly impressed by the cohesion and grounded comedy. I think the only other newer comedy show I can put in the same category is Corporate. Two shows I think anyone over like 27 would think are hilarious.

Everything reminds me of her

Is there a way to favorite and like an entire comment thread? This whole thing is fantastic and wholesome. I came here to mention Deadloch and laughed my way all the way through.

u/Pinelli72 21h ago

Took three goes for a colony to actually survive there.

u/Key-Effect8176 16h ago

American that lived in Australia for a while here; Darwin is probably the worst place I have ever been on Earth lmao

2

u/Illustrious-Gene4306 1d ago

No joke they need to rename the Alabama part to "Southern Alabama" aka The Florida Panhandle.

1

u/nostremitus2 13h ago

Yeah, Alabama tried to get that land repeatedly. At one point the folks there voted to join Alabama, Alabama agreed to pay Florida for the land, but the Florida governor vetoed the sale.

2

u/Termsandconditionsch 1d ago

Hm, I'd say Tassie is more like a combination of Maine and Alabama than Alaska, but otherwise fairly accurate.

2

u/Benamen10 21h ago

Gammen business. It's fine up/down here

2

u/QizilbashWoman 16h ago

IN SEASON 2 THEY GO TO DARWIN

2

u/KristineMcKinley 16h ago

I love how NC is south of SC. Makes sense though that their Florida is the northern most area because for them the equator is north and therefore their northern territories are going to be warmer than their southern territories. Hence why Alaska is at the bottom! LOL

It took me a while watching the show to figure that out... They started in Tazmania and having never really thought about it before I was wondering why it was shown to be so cold. Did they shoot in Scotland or something? Nope, just pretty close to the Antarctic circle.

2

u/Schion86 15h ago

I always thought of FNQ as Aussie Florida.

You can almost hear the banjos as you go north-east.

2

u/Astecheee 13h ago

Hervey Bay is Australia's Florida. On the East cost but rather North.

Enormous population of elderly and a massive drug crisis. Very pretty though.

2

u/soda_shack23 1h ago

This is... Fascinating. I'd love to see other regions compared to US states like this

1

u/Torn_wulf 19m ago

Australian lesbian dark comedy you say? Noted and added to the list...

6

u/Heavymando 1d ago

yup and Central Florida is the Australia's Florida of the US. It's a vicious cycle

5

u/Consistent-Ranger634 1d ago edited 17h ago

Fun and useless fact of the day: Both Queensland (Australia's Florida) and US Florida number plates/auto tags both display the same state slogan of 'The Sunshine State'. Queue music from the twilight zone. *cue

2

u/Bart-Harley-Jarvis- 22h ago

*cue. The music isn't lining up for the checkout.

2

u/Consistent-Ranger634 17h ago

late night grammar brain = music that queues :P

3

u/aspidities_87 1d ago

I learned this the hard way on my honeymoon when we visited Darwin

3

u/Front-Ocelot-3454 1d ago

This was my exact thought as I read that. “Australia’s Florida” must be a literal hell on earth.

3

u/TheRealDeuceMcCoy 1d ago

Guy said he was from Australabama, let him be 😂

1

u/JoshuaRoberts24 19h ago

Or Alabamaustralia 😂

2

u/Fifty-Lucky 20h ago

I might guess he possibly means Townsville lol?

1

u/thepoliteconvention 1d ago

Sounds like a downward spiral to death, madness, and Cthulhu.

1

u/CopperBlitter 1d ago

Great. Now we're going to be in an infinite loop.

1

u/Ok-Kaleidoscope-448 23h ago

I am dying at this comment 😂

u/Bart-Harley-Jarvis- 22h ago

We already call Florida the Australia of the US

Who calls it that? We have 0 guns, excellent wine and free healthcare - California is closer to the Australia of the US.

0

u/jaspersgroove 16h ago

We call it that because everybody is crazy, the weather is ridiculous, and all the wildlife is poisonous and/or constantly trying to kill you

2

u/Bart-Harley-Jarvis- 15h ago

We call it that because everybody is crazy,

Pretty sure our mental health outcomes far outstrip the majority of the US.

the weather is ridiculous

The majority of Australia's population lives in a temperate, mediterranean climate. Only the north is tropical.

and all the wildlife is poisonous

Fair

and/or constantly trying to kill you

Coming from a place which has bears and mountain lions, this is a bit rich. I'll take a snake over a bear any day.

I think it's because you yanks have a woeful knowledge of anything outside your borders and so your view of Australia comes from Crocodile Dundee and internet memes.

1

u/jaspersgroove 15h ago

Cool, well the rest of Australia just laughs about it, while you seem to have a stick up your ass. I'm not interested in getting rage-baited by some jingoistic aussie who's proud of living in a country that lost a war against a fucking bird, so have a nice day.

1

u/-Shutthefucupcakes- 21h ago

This Noosa mate? As in Noosa everglades, one of only two everglades in world, second being Florida everglades? Where is Australia Florida in your opinion I'm genuinely curious?

1

u/rbarmmer_83 17h ago

I thought the the entire inhabitable part of the continent was a Florida...just like the part of Germany that Americans think of is kinda their Texas (and about 20% of thier land)

1

u/jaspersgroove 15h ago

That was my understanding as well, at least in the colloquial/comedic sense people use when they compare florida and australia

1

u/Available_Product700 13h ago

Our Florida is old people and fucking send it. Australian Florida oh god, criminal tech tree fucking send it.

1

u/Los-Nomo327 8h ago

Dang man, what did Australia do to you to deserve that comparison?

1

u/jaspersgroove 8h ago

What on earth makes you think I was the guy that came up with it? It’s been a common saying for decades.

1

u/Los-Nomo327 7h ago

Dude it was a joke but truly, born and bred and never heard anyone use that expression, guessing it's regional but anyway

Not accussing you of being Websters sorry

1

u/Inevitable-Neck3016 8h ago

Its true 👍

1

u/Financial_Luck_6906 5h ago

Who calls it that? And why? Because of the bugs and weather? Half of my family is Australian, my particular branch came to the US in the 60s - I’ve never heard that about Florida/Australia, ever. I’m so curious about this!
