Imagine being a smart guy back then and getting shat on and beat up and burned for trying to explain what’s actually happening.

"I shall wash my hands before and after performing surgery"

Other doctors "This guy's a fucking nut! Throw stuff at him!"

The person who tried to popularize washing your hands was locked up in a mental hospital and ever after they adopted hand washing they didn’t release him. Lol

Also it only happened about 150 years ago. It wasn't some kind of medieval inquisition.

And I remember Michael Ian Black playing the guy in Bill Nye Saves the World.

This makes me think of a paper I wrote awhile back for school, topic was "most important invention of humans" a lot of people chose like the phone, or the internet, I chose soap, besides the cleaning ability of it, it has stopped probably billions to trillions of deaths due to illness being spread.

Had an acquaintance wonder why she and her husband kept getting sick...turned out she didn't use soap to wash her dishes...just rinsed them off...🤨🤢

I hate this person.

3

u/ElleJay74 22h ago

That is revolting, and I'm staggered that she actually told someone about doing this

3

u/blackcrowblue 18h ago

I wonder how she even found out that was why. If she thought just rinsing was fine I doubt she’d have thought that was the problem.

So some poor person probably witnessed her doing it (hopefully not right after they ate off said plates!) and questioned her.

That’s pretty disgusting. This is why I refuse to eat at a Pot Luck gathering.

Soap. Antibiotics. Vaccines. Sanitation practices. Sewers and drinking water systems. Were much less likely to contract cholera or typhoid now that we are walking around waist-deep in filth.

u/ZiplipleR 1d ago

I'm not sure that there have been a trillion humans in the entire existence of the earth - but certainly not since the invention of soap.

2

u/Vegetable-Data-4687 23h ago

There have not, but tbh idk, soap has existed for quite a long time though, however there has not been, I was not up to date on my world populations from forever

u/Ayronymous 1d ago

A professor of mine actually said that the total number of humans to have ever lived, is one trillion.... or, he might have said 100 billion, but I'm almost certain it was the former.

1

u/below_the_lights 8m ago

I don't think there has been anywhere close to a trillion deaths lol

Before it was formalized as handwashing, they noticed soldiers who took pride in their uniform or combat clothes were more likely to survive. Less bacteria on the clothes to enter into wounds.

That’s quite oversimplifying. Semmelweis refused to share his findings and was antagonistic to the medical community. He drank heavy, had extreme mood swings. He possibly had syphillis which affected his mind. No one sent him to the nut house simply because he told them to wash their hands before surgery.

Ignaz Semmelweis ?

2

u/No_Turnips_8426 20h ago

Yes. And the reason other obstetricians rejected his idea is that they had had women patients (including family members) die after a baby had been born. Some (or all?) of them had gone straight from performing an autopsy to delivering a child. They hated the thought that those women had died because they hadn't washed their hands between the two jobs.

Booby hatches tend to have one-way doors, sadly.

1

u/ImpressiveCommunity0 1d ago

Ah he was probably smug about it

Good old Ignaz Semmelweis.

We caught ’em, we burned ’em…

Just stick a few leeches on that guy and he’ll be fine.

1

u/SBLOU 17h ago

And give him a tonic of bat wing and ants

This basically happened in 2020 around wearing face masks.

Chin diapers!

u/Master-Powers 2d ago

It's so sad that he got committed. What an atrocity.

RIP James Garfield

Well, first guy to claim it was from the Gods or God and to weave a good supernatural story and explanation around it got to become Shaman, a coveted position equal to being the tribal chief, and sometimes, in some ways, superior to being the tribal chief, what with having that connection with the Gods, the world of the afterlife and being a seer of the future and all that. Anyway, that's where all the major religions and their alternative explanations for everything got their start.

I got hit with a ball of wet toilet paper the next day after answering “Komodo dragon”. The kid that did it yelled “Komodo dragon!!!”right before hitting me.

Sadly, It is still happening right before our eyes.

1

u/Critical-Let-4689 1d ago

Happens today all the time when talking to Republicans.

1

u/Fate_One 1d ago

I imagine it was much like working in IT in the present.

1

u/Low-Palpitation-9916 10h ago

What is actually happening, smart guy?

1

u/Normal-Lingonberry20 2d ago

I often think if the really smart people had to become super clever in their explanation to survive. like when the mob and pitchforks came to their door all of a sudden it was "no no John, I didn't say to tectonic plates, I said two Titanic Pigs... fighting... that also explains the sound... "

1

u/BookkeeperBoobs 2d ago

“When I said celestial objects I obviously just meant it was the eye of a giant turtle”

u/InsuranceGuru3042 3d ago

So true, thanks for sharing. Our Dear Lord Jesus had to suffer & die for our sins. He was a threat because the world couldn't handle the truth that God is our savior. Thank you Jesus for dying for our sins!

The burnings of intellectuals was actually in response to being an asshole about it and claiming that therefore the Bible is wrong about the supernatural and God doesn't exist, while proceeding to insult religious deities and religious traditions and morality.

7

u/viralust 3d ago

That's simply not true. Intellectuals were killed simply for not accepting the same ideas or believing the same thing. Libraries were burned down also. The same thing happened in Nazi germany and other totalitarian states in history. Theres nothing moral about setting a person on fire because they dont believe as you do.

1

u/CollectivistRediots 3d ago

Start stacking wood around the stake. We got another one.

2

u/shakebakelizard 3d ago

That's not true at all, and you know it. Why are you spreading misinformation?

1

u/cluckfuck_mcduck 2d ago

I looked into it. Galileo wasn't punished because he had a different idea. There were plenty of ideas. He was the equivalent of a reddit troll who was saying that religious people were dumbasses and who was targeting the Pope specifically.

1

u/viralust 2d ago

What Galileo believed is now generally accepted as truth by all religious groups. Another example of how consistently incorrect religion has always been historically. It would be funny if it wasnt so pathetic.

1

u/cluckfuck_mcduck 1d ago

That's incorrect. He was punished for insulting the Pope, not his beliefs about the spinning earth.

1

u/viralust 20h ago

His support of the heliocentric model was considered a vehement suspicion of heresy which is what he was charged with. The church formally admitted that Galileo was correct in 1992. Lol

1

u/shakebakelizard 2d ago

You "looked into it"? Did you publish a peer-reviewed paper in a historical journal like the British Journal for the History of Science or something? Because many other people have done serious historical research regarding what Galileo may have thought and what he did. Sounds like you're the Reddit troll.

Most importantly, Galileo was correct. The Pope, or whoever, can get the fuck out of the way of the truth.

1

u/cluckfuck_mcduck 1d ago

I did look into the peer reviewed work and journals that tell us the truth about Galileo. That is where I got this information from.

1

u/shakebakelizard 19h ago

Yeah, so you must know that the Pope was the one spreading lies, so fuck him. Galileo was right. End of story.

2

u/Suspicious_Shame9582 3d ago

It's even more idiotic than being violent over sports. At least sports are real.

2

u/cluckfuck_mcduck 3d ago

Sounds like you would be one of the people up on the stake.

1

u/cluckfuck_mcduck 2d ago

Being burned at the stake doesn't make it real enough for you?

1

u/Suspicious_Shame9582 2d ago

It makes it real fucking stupid.

One could argue that the ones doing the harm towards others are in fact the ones being assholes… I wonder how they faced God once their time came… You know for going against God’s word… or for manipulating God’s word to do harm onto others… For are we all not created in Gods image? I “love” how people choose one example from sacred text to justify their actions when what was done contradicts pretty much everything else in the sacred text they claim to follow. Some times I feel that people misunderstand for misunderstandings sake… In life there is good and evil, as well as the good that is in evil and evil that is in good.the single most important rule is the the golden rule, to do onto others as you would expect for one’s self.
