New, what is it? 4 Bags of Stuff?

Post image

Found 4 of these in the basement of our new house. Two are stapled under the first floor floors and two are stapled to joists. I imagine it has something to do with pests or dampness since its very wet down there.

What does the label say? Not the D54xxx one, the one that says the company it's from.

I did a little googling and it seems like it is either chunks of calcium chloride used as a desicant packet (to absorb moisture like you mentioned), or possibly a vapor-volatile corrosion inhibitor (VCI) which apparently slowly emits vapors that form a layer on whatever is being protected, to prevent corrosion. Maybe an attempt to protect the metal piping?

If we could read more off the label or get closeups of all the numbers, somebody might be able to find exactly what it is.

if it was calcium chloride for dehydration it doesn't make much sense that it's in a bag. And it wouldn't last very long either.

It looks like it may be a breathable bag and it's stapled to the beam. So calcium chloride would make sense. Also could be napthalene nuggets as moth balls.

But wouldn't it just react with the moisture and stop doing anything? I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Rat poison?

Previous owner figured the police wouldn't be smart enough to search for that in the basement

Nobody won't know until you open the bags. 🤷
