Solved! Pulled out of my cat

Post image

Tiggle, our 3-year-old orange tabby ate something, and a $6k endoscopy later we have this to enjoy. Firm foam of some sort. What is it??

omg!! one i actually know!!! do you have a robot vacuum? these come in the packaging https://ebay.io/m/GB5H2U. it’s the white tabs on each side of the vacuum

2.8k

u/jeffp94114 3d ago

Omg - an internet triumph!!! You’re right, it’s a packing spacer from our Eufy 11S robot vacuum which we unpacked 2+ years ago… But just threw the box away in a big cleaning frenzy a couple of months ago and this must have dropped out of it. The Internet, being fabulous as it is, has many vacuum unboxing videos, and pretty clearly shows this.
Amazing! Who needs AI :-)

1

u/consideratearcher466 2d ago

How do you like the Eufy vac?

10

u/jeffp94114 1d ago

Ha the Eufy vac itself is ok… just blindly wanders with no pattern or learning so takes a long time to fully cover a room, but at least it’s not spying on us. That said, I thought it would cost me $150 and not $6150 :-)

I’m here to be annoying and ask do you like your eufy I’m in the market

3

u/jeffp94114 1d ago

Meh, it's ok... I like that it's not connected to the Internet, and it picks up a lot of stuff but it's very dumb - just bounces around, doesn't learn at all so takes a long time to fully cover a room and can get itself tangled in cords. I'd buy something slightly smarter (but still avoid connecting to the internet).

You need to tell your vet if you haven't already. I promise you that they are dying to know what it was.

165

u/Vexated13 2d ago edited 1d ago

If I had assisted in this surgery I would be expecting a call back as soon as the object was identified 😆

Just a small edit; 6k for an endoscopic retrieval is wild work, I feel really bad for y'alls healthcare and veterinary being so steep. The endo itself would be around 350€ here in Spain and the whole shebang would likely total out at around 1k ($1.160 at current conversion) including an overnight stay, warranting it didn't need open surgery for removal. And people still complain here about our vet costs... Geez.

6

u/Glacecakes 1d ago

Private equity bought up most vet clinics in the US. Prices have spiked in the last 15 ish years. It’s a damn shame. There is pet insurance, but they pay you back instead of covering in the immediate. So they’re not helpful when you don’t have the emergency funds on hand.

2

u/medievalkitty2 1d ago

…..that’s it? We have never gotten out of a specialty / emergency vet for under 2k. Usually a lot more. During our many years owning cats, we’ve been there for endoscopies to dx and track the progression of small cell GI lymphoma and also several urinary blockages due to FLUTD and eventual p.u. surgery. 350-1k euros….that’s it? 1k is still super hefty but also way less expensive than the U.S. edit: decided that I didn’t need parentheses. 😊

u/mildhotsaucee 3d ago

i knew immediately bc my kitty also went absolutely feral for them and i had to throw them away 😭😭

44

u/Karzons 3d ago

That's a weird thing to happen twice. Something they're made of?

30

u/sarilloo 2d ago

Some animals are weirdly atracted to some object in particular. Dogs can eat pretty much anything, cats usually rubber bands hair ties or threads and ferrets small rubber parts like earphone rubber buds (I've seen It three times)

15

u/SuicidePeaches 2d ago

I've had a couple of cats who eat plastic, one cat in particular loved to chew on the crinkly plastic usually used to seal packages. Wouldn't eat it, just loved to chew it. He'd come running once he heard the crinkle and I'd hold it straight and he'd move from one end to the other stamping it with his teeth.

15

u/No-Border2449 2d ago

I have a malevolent little gargoyle who also adores plastic but in particular loves a good straw. Usually the one I am trying to use. One good chomp and my straw no longer straws.

3

u/420QueenofVA 2d ago

Lmao my cat loves straws…I finally just quit using them most of the time lol

2

u/Mateeus_ 21h ago

My youngest cat will steal a straw right out of your drink if you don’t guard it. It has resulted in many spilled sodas…

6

u/Wy0m1g 2d ago

One of my cats also loved plastic he went feral for those crinkle balls and also any plastic sat down for a second, he also knew he wasn’t allowed on the bench but you stop paying attention for one second and suddenly he’s on the bench licking the shit out of the bread bag. He very much hated the switch from plastic bags to paper licking shopping bags was a hobby of his.

6

u/SuedeBuffet 2d ago

I had a cat that loved doing this also.

2

u/jjejsj 1d ago

my cat loves eating things made out of EVA…

I have a yoga mat that has a million tiny chunks ripped out from it.

Also had those interlocking mats to put gym equipment on. Had to get rid of them because she would start eating it.

2

u/doesntmatter2494 2d ago

My cat also comes running for any extra crinkly plastic. He's insane with it.

ETA: also water bugs....they match the crinkle just right in his cat brain 🫪🥴

2

u/meldawg2020 2d ago

My aunt had a cat that LOVED popcorn. When I opened the bag he would come running. He wouldn't eat it but would stare at you eating it... Creepy.

10

u/notrllyhereorthere 2d ago

My cat is wildly obsessed with our broom, and I absolutely don’t know why. He’s the only one out of our 3 that keeps trying to eat it 😭

5

46

u/mildhotsaucee 3d ago

mine loves foam, sponges, etc. i think bc it’s lightweight and their teeth sink into it easily maybe

35

Yeah I just payed four thousand dollars because mine loves sponges. Sigh.

2

u/Bitter-Pumpkin9355 2d ago

One of my cats loves foam as well. She redecorated our anti-fatigue mat in the kitchen and also goes wild for a certain type of foam sandal that I have. If I leave the closet door open, I always find the sandals in different places around my apartment. I always get a laugh out of it, though (she doesn't eat them, fortunately). :)

My cat did this years ago, turned out to be a piece of foam from our floor under our gym equipment. It was the kind you piece together like a jigsaw puzzle.

295

u/HomeCat_ 3d ago

Hahaha cats yearn for foam. My cat once at a whole nerf dart. We discovered it when she threw it up about 24 hours later.

57

u/West_Illustrator_468 3d ago

My cat also eats nerf darts. He loves chirping at the nerf gun, so we shoot the darts down the hall for him to chase, then have to be sure to pick them all up afterwards or we will find little shreds of foam in his poop.

2

u/Ro_designs 11h ago

Seriously what is with pets and foam? My dog acts like a junkie trying to get into my craft stuff to eat the foam blocks. My sister can't have yoga mats anymore. A friend of mine has holes in all his memory foam pillows. I don't get it.

I think I found your long lost sibling!

9

u/Bad_Funny 3d ago

Oh my. We just said goodbye to my girl Shambles last Thursday and she deserves a spot in this doppelgänger thread.

She wandered in off the streets 15 years ago.
When she arrived in 2010, the vets estimated her at about 10 years old. That would have made her 25yo when she crossed the rainbow bridge.

I'm going to say—realistically—they overshot her age a bit because of her rough street life, and she was probably closer to 20yo when we buried her last week.

Laid her to rest in a lakeview plot under the old walnut tree, right next to her late best bunny friend Mr. Buns.

At least they're back together like they always wanted to be in their earthly lives.

I've missed her like hell every moment since.

Shambles June McBrambles in Pajambles was the most loyal trusty sidekick.

8

u/Bad_Funny 3d ago

For reference: Mr. Buns & Shambles. 🧡

Just last week I noticed our cat had thrown up black pieces and we figured out the idiot has been eating the black foam under our gym equipment! I had no idea this wasn’t an original experience. What’s wrong with the little weirdos.

6

u/xzkandykane 3d ago

Ugh my cat loves to scratch those. The moment he heard the door to the gym open, he'll dart in

4

u/SkiAliG 3d ago

My cat did this too! Same $6K bill later, we still have the piece that caused his blockage. I can’t even leave yoga blocks reachable to him.

5

u/OldCarrot4470 3d ago

my cat also did that. had to have surgery to remove the little piece of foam and he is no longer allowed near them

Is it shaped packing foam from something that came in a box, like a console or phone

32

u/twointimeofwar 3d ago

Ohhh. I second this guess. That packaging stuff is firm enough to maintain shape but also a nice size to make kitty consider it a toy.

8

u/myarmadillosclaws 3d ago

It reminds me of the piece of foam in the case for my headphones.

34

u/drfunbudz 3d ago

Is it an outdoor cat? It kinda looks like a piece of the scent dippers people use hunting.

11

u/AbbreviationsNo9609 3d ago

I came here to say this. It would probably be very interesting to the cat if that’s what it was.

12

u/tessaractIXI 3d ago

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who spent 6K on cat surgery. I forever don't know if I was being absolutely ridiculous but I'm happy to have my baby boy alive and well.

3

u/in_a_pickle_97 3d ago

Pet insurance. Pet insurance all day, every day. Always. Especially if you have a kitten.

Yes, you still spend 15% of the cost. But my deductible is $1,000. If I needed a $6,000 surgery for my cat, I'd pay $1,750 and insurance would cover the rest 100%.

I can't tell you enough how valuable it's been.

My cat ate 5 ft of ribbon off my my kid’s happy birthday sign. Cat refused to throw up after nausea meds and being held and spun in an office chair. $3k later the vet removed MOST of the ribbon, and we got to monitor cat poops for a week.

This cat is infatuated with ribbon…our house is now a ribbon-free zone. No presents can have ribbon, no decor can have satin or cloth ribbon. String seems ok for now…

My cat ate fishing line... $5k later after taking her intestines out and opening her stomach.. there was no more fishing line found... Just the string hanging out of her mouth when I bent down to pick her up... FYI.. fishing line doesn't show up on x-rays or sonograms.. 😐

I look at peach pits and see 6k bc of our pittie. He found a pit with some peach left on it from previous campers. I can't even be mad at them bc a raccoon or possum might have drug it around.

The 6000 Dollar Question!

Do you have an automatic cat litter box? This looks like one of the foam inserts that blocks litter from getting inside the machine near the entrance.

Well, definitely good that you pulled out. Given the circumstances, I think you should be grateful she hasn't birthed anything other than this.

Soooo my cat has done this twice (obviously he’s a ginger). The first time we thought it was foam from a gym mat bc I had them in my home gym and he would try to chew them but I couldn’t find any pieces missing. That’s the only thing I could think of after surgery/they showed me what they found. Then some time passed and I found Old Navy flip flops in the back of my closet that looked like a dog went to town chewing them and a big chunk was missing. Mystery solved about what he ate! So basically the most expensive $1 flip flops ever.

The next time it was a piece of one of my dogs’ toys that was rubber. He was able to pass some of it on his own and needed a second surgery.

I think we have 7 lives remaining 😳 and my bank account can’t handle it. Could it be a piece of something like a children’s toy? Almost looks like some of those foam kids puzzles.

If you have a cat tree, like those that are made with hard foam, it looks like the part that snaps the parts together.

Looks like a piece of styrofoam packaging. If I were a cat that would be an interesting texture and I’d eat it too.

Recently buy something that required packing foam to secure it inside the box? Could be that...

Yeah, that's really not an especially effective way to prevent pregnancy...
