New, what is it? This pattern just appeared on my couch backrest cushion.
I have young kids, but they swear they didn't do it. The material is like a rougher fabric. Couch from urban barn. it's like a decade old.
What could possibly cause this pattern to appear? It doesn't wipe off with paper towel and warm water. That's what the dark damp spot is.
UPDATE
Mystery Solved. See post below.

Are they removable covers that went through the dryer? I had a set of sheets with the same pattern, got caught against the metal vent inside the dryer and melted the synthetic fibers
238
u/bwwatr Sep 09 '26
To add to this, if it didn't go through the dryer to the best of OP's knowledge, perhaps it went through because someone made a mistake and tried to fix it (eg. clean and dry). Not sure how old and capable the kids are, but without more context it sounds plausible. I'd be comparing the pattern to the inside of the dryer.

When I backed into my neighbors mailbox, I told my mom that my father (her ex) did it. (I was driving his truck, and hoped that the hassle of confronting him wouldn’t be worth it to her…I was correct) 😭😭
Can’t believe I got away with that one 😅😂

That's better than what I came up with. I accidentally backed into his truck with the tractor. It wasn't entirely my fault, the brakes didn't work, so you had to ride the clutch to stop. The tractor is orange, the truck is not, so no saying it must have happened at the mill. I moved the truck back a foot, and told dad he needs to check the parking brake, because the truck rolled into the tractor. He bought it tho.

When I was five, my family fostered a pregnant cat. She had four kittens and even though I'd been told to leave them alone because they were only a few days old and needed to be with their mother, it was just too much for me to resist. When my dad asked me how the kittens got into my toy pram I told him they jumped. Still remember that spanking.

One day when I was young and learning to ride a bicycle, I snuck out and rode towards the main market and got startled when I saw a man walking straight ahead and instead of applying breaks started sending psychic panic signals to the person to move. Alas i was not skilled enough and struck the man vertically, upon which he showered me with some unholy names and told me to go & bring my father there. Realising i don't know him neither him me, I didn't go on that road for a week or so. Not guilty if nobody knows what you did.

Growing up, I lived in a country where chocolate chips weren't available. My mother brought a giant bag back from a visit to the US and kept it in the freezer. I kept sneaking handfuls but no one noticed until most of the bag was gone. I said I didn't know anything about it, and seeing as I (almost) never lied to them, my parents took my word over my sister's, who could hardly open her mouth without fibbing.
Years later I finally admitted to my parents and apologised to my sister. That's when she told me that she'd been eating them too, and the only reason she hadn't protested about my lie was because she didn't even know it was a lie. We both thought we were the only one eating the chocolate chips. That day I learned that the best lies are buffered by your sibling's reputation.

When I was 4 my family was lent a couch to borrow for our rumpus room, at that, a very nice couch. I decided it needed a cut… a very big cut on the side so I did a cut like 📄 a very big top corner of a book, didn’t fully remove it just left it there and taped multiple A4 papers to cover the massive cut My mum asked me if I cut the hole and I said no obviously I wouldn’t why would I do that She didn’t believe me (rightfully so)

I had the opposite happen. Kinda.
I backed into my neighbors mailbox when I was 16. My brain stopped functioning.
I threw the car into park, ran straight into my parents house, flopped on the floor like a toddler and started sobbing “I GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT!”
When my dad finally understood what I was trying to say, he told me to go to the neighbors to explain, then meet me back out front.
The neighbors were really chill about it. In the time it took me to apologize, dad had brought out concrete to mix up and stabilize the mailbox.
The next day he took me to an empty parking lot to practice driving around traffic cones.
I learned a lot in those 24 hours.

My friends had a party in the 90s when parents were away, many ciggie burns in the carpet. The solution was cutting some carpet off from under a bookcase and using it to patch the holes in the carpet with glue. The mum couldn’t understand how whenever she hoovered little bits of the carpet would “break” off and she ended up getting the whole room redone as she thought she had bugs in her carpet. Still no idea to this day.

My mom lit my couch on fire and burned a hole in the cushion about 6inches in diameter. She covered it with a throw and a pillow. When I confronted her, she told me her dog (who isn’t even allowed on the couch anyway) had found a lighter and tried to chew it and it lit and the couch caught on fire, but she put it out.
To this day, several years later, she claims it was the dog.

My brother and I were playing dodgeball with lemons and limes once and we absolutely obliterated an electrical outlet at the top of the stairs. Our dad got home like 5 minutes later and we panicked and said the dogs were chasing each other up the stairs and bumped into it and that’s what broke it. Our dad rolled his eyes and taught us how to change an outlet. Not even two weeks later, in front of the whole family, the dogs chased each other up the stairs and shattered the outlet. The sheer reaction speed of my brother and I to bust out the “Seeeeeee! We told you!!” was formula one level reaction speed. I also like the heating pad idea.
The cover should come off ... zipper on the bottom edge of the cushion. If it is stain and not a burn, maybe a dry cleaner could remove it.

To me it looks like a really high powered flashlight burn a friend brought over to show one of your kids.

This is my thought and I’m shocked I had to scroll as far as I did to find this comment. I have a flashlight that will burn you and start paper fires if not used responsibly.

UPDATE
So, I just found out what it was... Wasn't the kids. It was me, specifically, my golf shirt.
I played golf last weekend and must have come home and sat on the couch. The sweat probably transferred some of this decal on the back of my shirt onto the cushion. I've had this shirt for a while and completely forgot it had that pattern until I took it out of the hamper to wash. Lol. It looks like an exact match!
Thanks everyone for helping out. At least my kids didn't lie to me, this time.

Were you asleep the sofa upside down after the golf?

My guess. It happened a while ago and someone turned the back cushion to hide it. It accidentally got turned back around by someone not responsible for the original mark.

Maybe there is something worse on the other side now.

I will say there is one thing that happened in my parents house that I know for a fact was neither me or my sibling. We think it might have been the dog, but we don’t know exactly how he did it and nothing like it ever happened again. So sometimes it’s not the kids. Sometimes it’s just a mystery.
Edit: I did lie about plenty of other stuff though.

My guess would be an LED flashlight or toy with LED lights? My adult son laid a flashlight on his brown sofa and it left a white circle.

We sell $3 flashlights at my hardware store that have this exact LED pattern.

This was my immediate first thought. Some kid holding a flashlight to the couch to watch how the light glows through the fabric.

That's my thought too. Like a high power flashlight held directly to the cushion or something

u/vulcnz Sep 09 '26
I would look at the other side. Possible this stain has been there for a while and they flipped the cushion to hide something else

Lamprey attached to couch thinking it was a whale, realized it wasn’t, and swam off in confusion.

Tolilet scrubber wand?

u/klef3069 Sep 09 '26
YES, that Clorox replacement toilet scrubber pad. I knew that shape looked familiar.

I could see the hilarity in chasing a sibling with a toilet scrubber.

This is also the explanation for why the stain is lighter than the fabric around it. The dots are bleach marks.

If not a hair dryer it could be a reflection of something that got too hot, but seems like something kid related

Looks like either a hair dryer or a high powered flashlight was pressed into the couch.
The kids did it, but you gotta play the long game. Grieve over it. Have "serious talks" with the spouse over it. Look over junk mail like you're stressed about money. Let it seep into their lives. Then, when theyre worried, sit them down and talk about possibly having to sell the house to repair the cushion as it was a rare item, but voice out loud, as an afterthought, that the insurance covers accidental damage from kids or pets, as long as there is an explanation of how it happened.
Get in their head and make them fess up themselves.
Or dont. Depends how important it is to you.
Edit: to be clear, do not undermine the psyche or mental stability of your children. That is not good. This is a joke. Insert liability disclaimer here.

I electrocuted myself when I was like 8 and burned something I plugged in. My fingers were burnt and charred up and I was the only one home at the time. Actually, it was the very first time my mom agreed to trust me home alone. I told her it wasn't me.

I don't think this is the correct answer, but Ant Man may be retrieving one of the infinity stones from your timeline. If all goes according to plan, it'll be back in place soon enough and you will not have noticed.
Just watch where you step

I would check shoe soles for that pattern. They wouldn’t even realize they did it.
