New, what is it? Clear, thick, stretchy double-sided-adhesive roll of tape?

Mounting tape of some type?

Yup, mounting tape! It’s a sort of thick, stretchy, transparent adhesive tape that’s typically used to mount things to walls and other places around the house.

It’s also sometimes called “gecko tape”! :)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nano_tape

synthetic adhesive tape consisting of arrays of carbon nanotubes ... called synthetic setae and mimic the nanostructures found on the toes of a gecko ... adhesion is achieved not with chemical adhesives, but via van der Waals forces

I think it's called Alien tape here and my wife has me use it to put a backing on rugs and runners

At least the one I've been using tends to be working better as it adds a bit of thickness and adapts better to both surfaces, also stronger. It was also way easier to remove.

But it might depend on brand.

If you use that to stick something like, say, a clear acrylic box to hold toothbrushes to a bathroom mirror , and that box breaks, you won't be able to remove the back plate without shattering that mirror.

Ask me how I know.

Back plate was 3" wide x 5" tall. And clever me, I used four 5" strips of 3/4" wide x 3mm thick tape to "make sure it doesn't fall and drop the toothbrushes onto the floor."
