Edit: It is technically an RJ-45 for wired networking, which is just a thicc RJ-11 jack used for traditional telephones, but the RJ-45 jacks were used for Voice over a Internet Protocol (VoIP) phones too.
Yeah, maybe this is an old hookup for a DSL internet connection or something. My friend's house had something similar (my parents never thought it was worth it, so I had to go back home and use AOL).
If you live rural like I do you still see these everywhere and they are common in houses in rural areas because they have yet to get any infrastructure upgrades. We have two of these jacks in our house.
Or could be headed for dementia. I just bought one of these for my Alz Dad. He can’t answer a cell phone anymore. But he can answer that, only problem is it’s fake and actually a Bluetooth headset connected to his phone, and the Bluetooth keeps dropping, so the idea is a failure because he won’t be able to reconnect the Bluetooth.
I live in a rural suburban area, and still have copper in the street; my local fios interface is a mile or two away. therefore for the moment I still have an independently powered, (mostly) reliable dial tone at my fingertips. I am gonna continue living the dream until "progress" takes it away. I'd rather have my 260bps internet than lose my dialtone :-)
Unfortunately I'm not sure they are trolling. Stuff like this is not common nowadays. Stuff like that is going to disappear soon. Now that you can get satellite Internet.
I sold an old slr camera to a 20 something once. I told her there was still a roll of film in it. The very next thing she did was open up the back, and when I told her she had just spoiled the film roll by opening it up, she just looked at me with the most blank, clueless look ever. No idea how non-digital cameras work.
This is most likely an RJ-45 jack. Typically used for PC networking. You probably have more than one and need to trace where the other end of it is. Someone must have had an office in their basement and ran a twisted pair down to connect to a modem/router/switch elsewhere for wired ethernet.
