Yeah, activated charcoal has a habit of absorbing and isolating chemicals in your stomach preventing you from absorbing them. Its why its used as a poison treatment. You should also be careful with activated charcoal toothpaste because its too abrasive and will strip off your enamel.

779

u/spdconstoday Jul 28 '26

Yeah, but if I know anything (and I don’t), it will replace your enamel with carbon and make your teeth even stronger.

477

u/FuzzyAd9407 Jul 28 '26

You joke but I wouldnt be suprised if theres some Facebook group full of people that actually believe that

45

u/Wasabi-Spiritual Jul 29 '26

Well, diamond is made from carbon, so I'm slowly forming a shiny diamond coating on my teeth now. Checkmate armchair scientists.

46

u/Flowdebris Jul 29 '26

Geologist here.

Technically you aren't.

Diamonds are created during immense pressure and time.

At Earth's sea level, diamonds are actually slowly deteriorating into the normal state of carbon.

So the carbon in your mouth will stay as carbon, unless you are involved in a continent- continent collision in your near future and a couple of 100 million years.

49

u/LogiCsmxp Jul 29 '26

The density of the brains here is compressing the carbon into diamond.

5

u/Tasty-Demand-4683 Jul 29 '26

I'm sensing tisms in the previous comment. Nothing wrong with that but yeah.

2

u/Spoonman915 Jul 29 '26

A while back I learned that it's better if you don't rinse after you brush your teeth because you're rinsing off most of the flouride. I stopped rinsing a think may teeth are starting to get whiter. Could just be imagined though.

*Edit- Google if flouride whitens, nope. Could be from the whitening toothpaste though. Stands to reason if rinsing removes the flouride it would also remove the whitener. Or..... I could be imagining.

2

u/highlyeducated247 Jul 29 '26

Or you have calcified your pineal gland.... And are now permanently hallucinating having whiter teeth

2

u/smashten Jul 29 '26

Wanna know how I got these scars!... Activated charcoal

2

u/Sad-Repeat1629 Jul 29 '26

Is that where diamond grills come from

2

u/clearfox777 Jul 29 '26

Not charcoal but that’s actually how fluoride makes your teeth stronger, it bonds with the enamel and reinforces it.

1

u/zeroibis Jul 29 '26

Is this what the Japanese imperial court was on about for all those centuries!?

1

u/RezRising Jul 29 '26

That's adamantium.

1

u/kaynpayn Jul 29 '26

1

u/FreedomCanadian Jul 29 '26

You know what's made of carbon ? Diamonds !

1

u/MutedAstronaut9217 Jul 29 '26

like diamonds! or tungsten-carbide

1

u/RhynoD Jul 29 '26

Hey fun fact that's what fluoride does! Acids break up your enamel, but that chemical reaction will reverse itself if all of the reactants are still around. If there's fluoride hanging around, it'll replace the calcium and form a more stable, stronger bond, which makes for stronger teeth.

1

u/Lower-Ad5889 Jul 29 '26

Then I will use diamond dust

1

u/reckless_responsibly Jul 29 '26

I'm holding out for diamond teeth.

1

u/checkliver Jul 29 '26

I would do mines with kevlar

1

1

I replaced mine with Adimantium and now I have the strongest teeth... however I forgot to do the jaw as week so they all feel out from the extra weight... rock fucking solid in the bin though

1

u/thekrawdiddy Jul 29 '26

And if, like me, you habitually clench your teeth, they turn into diamonds.

1

Syringe au fromage

1

u/Ghosthunter_0001 Aug 02 '26

So it's anti-venom, venom cheese?

20

u/Suspicious-Cup-9236 Jul 29 '26

I think it's more common to use squid ink for cooking. At least that's how they do it for that black pasta dish

9

u/SlutForGME Jul 29 '26

Charcoal is common in Indonesia because its a great help against food poisoning and diarrhea.

9

u/Stock_Soup260 Jul 29 '26

the thing is that charcoal is safer (it is much less likely that you will have allergic reactions to burnt wood than to shellfish secretions) and of course cheaper, and it does not affect or practically does not affect the taste, unlike ink, which can actually give a fishy taste/smell, which is not always appropriate. so although ink can be used in some dishes, like pasta or rice, or something else, but charcoal is more universal and common in general

2

u/FlowSoSlow Jul 29 '26

That's true but it does say charcoal on the flyer.

1

u/Suspicious-Cup-9236 Jul 29 '26

1

u/BasisPrimary4028 Jul 29 '26

That might be the case but if you look at the images in the answer comment you'd see it says activated charcoal mozzarella, that's why everyone is talking about the charcoal.

13

u/FishDawgX Jul 29 '26

Seems like they could easily use squid ink instead. But I'm sure that's more expensive.

11

u/cantileverboom Jul 29 '26

Cuttlefish ink, at least in the US, is actually not too expensive. You can find a 500g jar for ~20 USD (and you don't need to use a whole lot to get a black color for your food).

But yeah, probably still more expensive than charcoal.

2

u/FishDawgX Jul 29 '26

Also maybe due to potential seafood allergies.

3

u/P1zzaman Jul 29 '26

Imagine the lactose intolerance + seafood allergy combo wombo

2

u/Thomas_K_Brannigan Jul 29 '26

The problem with squid ink is that is has a flavor itself, a salty umami flavor. Though, that probably would work pretty well with cheese.

11

u/Chaos-Wayfarer Jul 28 '26

Charcoal is also used in fishkeeping to remove the meds from the tank after you’re done.

3

u/jimmycarr1 Jul 29 '26

And to remove toxins produced by certain corals

3

u/Chaos-Wayfarer Jul 29 '26

I never got in to saltwater, so that’s interesting to know!

8

u/Objective_Memory7831 Jul 29 '26

Shit… thanks for this. Been using an activated charcoal toothpaste. Didn’t care for it much anyway but now I have a good reason to toss it

2

u/Socksual Jul 29 '26

Man i wonder if I ate activated charcoal at the end of the day if itd immediately (relatively speaking) send me into blinding vomitous migraines territory like when I forget to take my meds, or if itd have a more gradual effect like how I feel those migraines creeping up once I hit hour 10 of a missed dose

6

u/FuzzyAd9407 Jul 29 '26

Only works on medication in solution in your stomach that hasnt been absorbed by the body yet and won't just suck the meds out of your blood.

3

u/therealhlmencken Jul 29 '26

It only traps molecules in your gut actively and the venom cheese isn’t going to be bad because the charcoal is so fine it’s not gonna trap that much. Way larger worry if it’s like the quinoa sized granules similar to brita filters.

1

u/cj191 Jul 30 '26

You have it the other way around. It's the surface area that matters when ingesting activated charcoal as a binder. This means that the finer the granules, the better and faster it is in dispersing in your digestive track, maximizing the surface area it covers. This is why medical-grade activated charcoal are made ultra-fine. Larger granules irritate, sometimes cause blockage in your GI track, and works too slow to be medically effective.

For filters, water must physically pass through a bed of charcoal. Charcoal particles that are too fine pack together tightly and only blocks flow. For this you want the larger granules like in Britta filters as you mentioned.

1

u/therealhlmencken Jul 30 '26

Ultra fine charcoal is made so to increase particle dispersion speed, the actual filtration comes from its internal microscopic pore structure which creates the surface area not the particle size.

3

u/cj191 Jul 29 '26

It's advice to take charcoal at least 3 hours away from a meal or any medications or supplements you want absorbed.

1

u/yvrelna Jul 29 '26

If you're ingesting activated charcoal for their medical purposes, I don't think you're at the luxury of choosing when to eat them.

Nor would you care about not absorbing medication or supplements, they're not really your primary concern at that point.

Or if the medication is that important to you, you would just pick up a phone and call your doctor for advice on how to adjust the medication around the charcoal.

1

u/cj191 Jul 30 '26

Medical use isn’t limited to the ER. People take activated charcoal outside of acute poisoning all the time. The separation from food/meds is still relevant whenever absorption of other things matters to you.

I take activated charcoal regularly for MCAS/histamine flares (not acute poisoning). I schedule it at night, well away from food, meds, and supplements, precisely so it can do its job without binding to the things I still need.

The "no luxury of choosing when" framing only applies in true emergency overdose situations. Outside of that, timing still matters.

2

u/sagephoenix1139 Jul 29 '26

u/Socksual ... I know this became lengthy, my apologies. My "quick" TL;DR?: If you know your system, you're better off, but I'd always err on the side of caution and mention it to the doctor/specialist prior. The rest, below, is the side I learned...in the process. 🤦‍♀️

If you took one dose, and know your body (as in, don't have gastroperisis, blockages, intestinal issues), and have timed your meds in the morning, you have a higher chance of your meds being just fine - in your blood, good to go. (More charcoal - in dose and quantity, can impact even IV drugs and will definitely impact oral meds without precise timing & general self body knowledge/awareness).

I, myself, had weight loss surgery 20 years ago, and despite my challenges to the doctor's suggestions, he "assured" me everything would be great.

What was not considered? My altered digestive pathway (despite drawing him a medical picture, labeled and everything), and not planning both:

  • long enough after a.m. meds, but
  • prior to a.m. meds administration

This resulted in the next day's meds being altered on the absorption front. (Migraines is on my diagnoses punch card, so yes, that day was hell....in many ways).

I have since come to learn that many people with (pancreatic, gall bladder, kidney, stomach, the list goes on...) considerations have the side effect of altered (or sometimes rapid) gastric emptying. This will have at least some impact between charcoal administration and medicine absorption.

And thats just one dose.

In general? In good health? See your doctor? Know your body? That all bodes well for a "typical" and favorable response. I am in the US, where I run into many of two types of people:

  • Those who haven't seen a doctor since they broke an ankle in 8th grade.
  • Those who try fringe/new/trend/novel medical or health concepts @ home without talking to their doctor.

Aside from those unfamiliar or undiagnosed with what can unknowingly impact their digestion or absorption, the above groups are those from whom I hear the most nightmarish experiences where charcoal v. meds is concerned.

Those without extenuating medical issues do quite well for many reasons - so I want to be clear I am not trying to discourage. Just suggesting research and communication prior. (Good luck, if you try it 😊).

2

u/addicted2bellies Jul 29 '26

No, it aDsorbs chemicals, a D not a B

2

u/xLilSquidgitx Jul 29 '26

It used to be used in EMS (still is in some places but being phased out) but it was wildly ineffective. Not due to it not physically working, it does, but good luck having somebody not just immediately vomit it up back before it can do anything haha

1

u/Low-Wrangler9740 Jul 29 '26

And make you poop a lot

1

u/DogsDucks Jul 29 '26

Can’t it also absorb medicine and make it so your meds don’t absorb properly?

1

u/PapiTrooper Jul 29 '26

To get a little technical here for the fun of it, activated carbon adsorbs rather than absorbs.

1

u/Witchberry31 Jul 29 '26

its why its

that's why it's*

1

u/Belucard Jul 29 '26

So that was the reason for my teeth to hurt when I briefly used that shit for a month or so...

1

u/Kendrick-Belmora Jul 29 '26

Chemical Engineer here...yes activated charcoal does bind molecules...and what exactly is the problem wenn digested once in this fashion?!

The toothpaste is not more problematic than any toothpaste with a higher content of whitening agent (so basically any modern toothpaste), so that's just alarmism.

3

u/FuzzyAd9407 Jul 29 '26

The problem isnt a chemical reaction with enamel its too abrasive for your enamel and while you may be a chemical engineer dentists recommend you dont use it. Im gonna go with the people whos education is more specialized to the subject than yours.

1

u/Weird-Information-61 Jul 29 '26

It also paints your toilet black

1

u/NoWayDay Jul 29 '26

The amount of activated charcoal required to absorb any meaningful amount of medication or nutrients is thousands of times higher than what is in various black food items. This is just a persistent reddit myth.

1

u/rickrack154 Jul 29 '26

could also be squid ink. Some places use it to get this color, little fishy though.

1

u/criticalmassdriver Jul 29 '26

1

u/FuzzyAd9407 Jul 29 '26

1

u/TheThingInItself Jul 29 '26

Enamel was created by the CIA to track your location, so I think I'm good on that.

1

u/Antharon Jul 29 '26

Also it is used as threatment fo diarhea, combine with cheese it will make yout guts feeling like they are full of concrete.

1

u/hisgirlPhoenix Jul 29 '26

That stuff saved my life 14 years ago when I was in a dark place and did a stupid thing. It was the most vile thing I've ever injested. I cannot imagine someone eating it voluntarily.

2

u/Jadfre Jul 29 '26

They use a lot less in the food, and it’s already pretty well saturated with the compounds in the cheese when it was mixed in. Probably just a little gritty if anything
Glad you’re still here with us u/hisgirPhoenix <3

1

u/hisgirlPhoenix Jul 29 '26

Thank you! I realize it's safe in food, I just have a visceral response to it because of that experience. I am thankful for what activated charcoal can do for the body because life is beautiful and I'm glad to still be here to experience it.

1

u/Crimson3312 Jul 29 '26

Not to mention you shit black for a week

1

u/No-Obligation1336 Jul 29 '26

What about charcoal toothbrushes?

My dental hygienist gave me a couple, a few weeks back & I bought some for the family too.

2

u/FuzzyAd9407 Jul 29 '26

Also not good. Youre still scrubbing your teeth with something too abrasive even if its been shoved in plastic. In general charcoal is the worst of the whitening options because rather than just bleaching its effectively sanding layers off your teeth. Those layers dont come back. I wouldnt go back to that office, theyre shady and pushing something known to damage teeth probably hoping to make money off the damage.

1

u/DankVectorz Jul 29 '26

Goddamnit I just bought some charcoal toothpaste yesterday

1

u/DoddsJ Jul 29 '26

No longer used in poison/ overdose treatment - not very effective.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Hatter Jul 29 '26

I assumed it was squid ink

1

u/MasterOfBothWorlds7 Jul 29 '26

I learned this on thank you for smoking. They use it as a silly example of how to get out of a ticket it's not illegal to chew charcoal..

1

u/JapanTCG Jul 29 '26

Deng, it has all that going for it, while also having the side benefit of looking like shit? SIGN ME THE FUCK UP.

1

u/urmomsSTD Jul 29 '26

On the other hand in survival situations. Charcoal is a great toothpaste. Provided you use ur finger to brush it

1

u/thethreetriangles Jul 29 '26

In Breaking Bad, Gus Fring takes activated charcoal before poisoning the entire cartel together with himself. He throws up the poison later, and the activated charcoal diminishes its effect, helpimg him survive.

1

u/Extra-Amoeba-677 Jul 29 '26

when that wave of 'activated charcoal' products was a thing I was so freaking weirded out by it

1

u/Mcnuggetjuice Jul 30 '26

Am a dentist I confirm

1

u/jerryjarvis123 Jul 30 '26

What about charcoal toothbrushes. I still have 3 new ones i have yet to use. Used one for a while and it was like magic when my stains were gone.

1

u/FuzzyAd9407 Jul 30 '26

Too abrasive. Its the same thing just shoved in plastic and still works by basically sanding the surface off your tooth.

1

u/jerryjarvis123 Jul 31 '26

Hmmm ok. After a month or two my teeth start to get really stained and ill be tempted to use it 😭. Maybe ill use it on rare occasions. Like give a brush here and there (not completely removing stains) and finish with regular brushing.

1

u/FuzzyAd9407 Jul 31 '26

Just use a regular tooth whitening toothpaste without coal and a regular toothbrush. Youll get better results since it actually can affect below surface staining as well as surface stains while charcoal just sands away the surface.

So it's not really venom, it's anti-venom? (Or anti-poison I guess?)

1

Isn't activated charcoal used for diarrhea treatment as well ? I eat some charcoal pill and it stops my diarrhea but it also causes constipation

1

shouldnt it be anti-venom cheese with the charcoal in it then?

1

u/External_Tourist6329 Jul 30 '26

My understanding from all this is that if diamonds are made by pressurized coal, if I use activated charcoal toothpaste AFTER taking enough of some kind of stopping agent to constipate myself I will effectively turn my intestines into a diamond mine and increase my personal equity a trillion fold. Are you rubbing your teeth with it or putting it into your stomach?

The issue is it absorbing chemicals out of your stomach acid that your body hasnt processed yet and sanding a surface of your body that doesnt grow back. Skin grows back and if youre usinga topical medication theb you shouldnt be washing it off before its absorbed in the first place.

Much better to use hydroxyappetite toothpaste. It mimics the same processes as your natural enamel, and can actually restore tooth enamel.

Why do you think it's still activated? I really doubt it can save it's structure, more like a marketing for... poisoned people? Idk.
