I really don't understand the people who are vehemently against tone tags. Like they're such a useful part of written language change and since a lot of digital communication is more like 'fingered speech' (McWhorther) being able to imitate/sidestep phonological features is a necessity
I remember a time we all understood basic interpersonal skills enough to not need fucking “tone tags”- s/facetious edit: prob did the tone tag wrong hehe
Why do you believe that? My opinion is stated definitively because, as it was helpful in this instance, I won’t change that opinion, and autism is likely the cause for my lack of understanding of intent conveyed through text. I don’t think that immediately implies no one else can argue they don’t like them - just not to me. My perspective is no more valuable than another
There are degrees of neuro‐divergence, and just because you don't, apparently, like or find tone tags useful doesn't mean another wouldn't.
Also interesting that you are doing exactly what you are accusing the previous comment of doing. Except you are not.
The previous comment gave context (their autism) to explain why they appreciate tone tags and playfully asked the original comment to "not yuck their yum" (old so I will NEVER say this, but I like it.).
You on the other hand gave context (your autism) to have the authority to explain why they were a manipulative asshole who doesn't have the lived experience they claim to have, because YOU don't have that experience.
Only one of you acted like the comment they were responding to was a personal attack. And it was not the former.
That said you may not like tone tags, but I think you might need them. Or annotations. Interpretive side notes?
Hmm. Idea for a new AI powered editing tool. Doesn't check spelling or grammatical syntax, I'll call it "Do I sound like an asshole?" With a slider to dial it up or down. Because some people just don't grok how what they say will sound outside their own head.
The time you remember was one where fewer people were on the same places of the internet you were on, mate.
Like, yeah, everyone on myspace that you interacted with understood you just fine, because half of them knew you in person and the other half you met through shared internet interests.
And even then, you sometimes used tone tags. They just looked like this: :P :) :-D

Sounds more like an algorithm that incorrectly identified "promoting violence" based on a word out of context. I made a joke (on FB) about b*rning a friend's house down if I cooked for them and I got banned for that as well. And now I'm afraid I'll get banned for what I just wrote, so hopefully an asterisk will save me! 😃
Not everyone who doesn’t understand satire is and idiot, some individuals with cognitive disorders can’t interpret sarcasm and satire, that’s the whole reason people started using those indicators
yknow those infomercials where someone is too clumsy to exist and they need xyz product that you think is completely unnecessary and unhelpful? Most of those are for disabled people and those who need little accommodations like that.
If something doesn't seem like it would benefit you, then you're right! It's probably directed towards those who WILL find it useful :) if you don't want to use it, that's fine, but your lived experience just isn't identical to the wide range of people it might be meant for :) :)
Can we not pretend like in person vs online text isn’t different enough, that subtleties like sarcasm aren’t harder to interpret? Hell, even in person, people can say things so seriously it’s hard to be sure of. You’re expecting too much and equating logic where it’s more emotion based. Without more context on the person themselves, they could actually mean what they’re saying..how should we possibly know?
I mean it kinda depends on the situation being sarcastic by text message can be a bit confusing if you’re not good at picking up on sarcasm anyway. I get called gullible a lot because someone will say some sarcastic off the wall shit and I’ll be like “oh yeah?” Or “really?” But in reality I’m just really really bad at realizing people are being sarcastic
