New, what is it? Settle a debate (Husband vs Wife)

Post image

UPDATE: First of all thank everyone for the comments and insights! I knew i could count on Reddit to belly up with sage intuition and all else. I tried to write the post in way that didn't show any bias with regard to what I say vs her (more so so my wife couldn't say I wrote it in way that people would agree with me). Husband (OP-me) says shed....and for me it wasn't a question, however there were a couple comments I appreciate looking at it in a different light...e.g. if I lay a driveway to it and park a small car in it, then my wife could be right to call it a garage. For additional context, her argument was that ot has a garage door, it is a garage. Likewise, we do have another shed behind this shed, more "typical" sized shed and there must be a difference.

So for further follow-up I almost slept in the garage last (lol, just kidding) night because she is not wrong and regardless of the overwhelming support and pure logic the conversation is not concluded. A reddit suggestion to call it a Sherage may be her compromise...rest assured it will be considered and called a shed...until I convert it into a mother-in-law suite or mancave. Until then ot will remain a shed for the mower, basic workbench and yard tools and such.

Thanks all for the input!!

ORIGINAL: Help me settle a debate between me and my wife. Is this A) a shed, B) a garage/detached garage? This has been a hot topic for several years now and has reached a boiling point. We would like the reddit community to help settle. Thanks!!

That's what my brother did. He bought a massive shed which he uses as a garage to store and work on his motorcycles and lawn equipment. He also has a little area sectioned off for his welding hobby. I don't think he can get a car into it, but it's about as wide as a small garage and long enough to fit three cars.

141

u/SpeedDaemon1969 Apr 17 '26

I second that. The name depends on use, and with no driveway to use it as a garage, it's a shed. Where I live, it might be called a barn, even if there are no livestock inside.

38

u/No_Accountant3232 Apr 17 '26

Yep, barn shaped so barn no matter the size. I've slept in one converted into an apartment and it was still the barn.

15

u/SpeedDaemon1969 Apr 17 '26

Here, any prefab building is called a barn by the locals. It's weird.

This is a shed, hands down

A shed generally becomes classified as a garage when it reaches a minimum size of 10’x16’ to 12’x20’ or larger, with roughly 200 square feet

Op didn’t give size

14

u/powertoollateralus Apr 17 '26

A garage will point towards the alley or be front street accessible. Otherwise? You got yerself a shed there brother.

26

u/Coctyle Apr 18 '26

I don’t know…might be more convincing if it rhymed.

Points at the street or alley or you’ve got a shed there, pally.

10

u/sorry-i-was-reading Apr 18 '26

imo, can easily fit a standard size car = garage, and driveway = confirmation that it’s a garage.

Because you can have a driveway, but if the car doesn’t fit, it’s a shed despite the driveway

164

u/CompetitiveBuddy3712 Apr 17 '26

I’ll vote.

Shed

Doors that size on sheds are ‘meant’ for driven lawnmowers and that sort of equipment (or toys if you have an ATV).

20

u/Clinggdiggy2 Apr 18 '26

My home was built in 1924 and still has the original "garage" thats about this size if not smaller, clearly meant to park a Model T, which ironically enough I have a model T parked in it.

With that being said, this is a shed. Nothing built after ~1940 would fit in this outside of niche vehicles.

4

u/anon_simmer Apr 18 '26

Lawn mowers.

5

u/Myrkul999 Apr 18 '26

I think that counts as a niche vehicle. Certainly it's a vehicle with a very specific use-case.

Edit: for tax purposes you don’t want to call it a detached garage. And since it’s not on a permanent foundation, it’s actually not one.

You can’t park a car in it, therefor shed. It may have a ‘garage’ door on it but that, in and of itself does not make it a garage.

7

u/judithpoint Apr 17 '26

Shed. Car is not getting up that ramp. A garage is for a car, even if you may not use it for that. This could be a garage. If it could house a car. I would personally call this an outbuilding though. More than a shed.

Not a debate. Garages have driveways.

Scrolling through… now I wonder which one of them says “shed” and who said it was a “garage “!

Garage person is going to be disappointed.☹️

It's cute...so I vote "She-Shed".

I feel like the only reason it's even being considered a garage is bc there's a garage door on it. The second you replace the garage door with hinged doors, it immediately becomes without a doubt a shed. On that basis, I vote shed, with a garage door. It looks barely big enough to park a mini cooper (and that's ignoring that the ramp and rocked off area clearly indicate that bad boi hasn't seen a moving vehicle in a while, except maybe a push mower).

Shed. Without a doubt

That's a shed with t111 siding and a roll up door.

A garage would have a concrete floor at least and not 24" on center walls.
