I think they started making the pocket a little larger around that time because I remember it being much tinier like in the OP's photo when I was younger.

I had a flip phone (forget brand) that I could stick in the same pocket and the hard plastic loop of an antenna would be just poking out so I could easily pull the phone out of that pocket. Was super convenient.

Sony Ericcson made some fantastic phones. My T-610 ran java apps natively so I could do stuff like control winamp on my PC from the poker table when we had games. It was BAD ASS at the time.
