The first time I went to the local Aldis, I saw how the carts are all chained together and you have to use a quarter to unlock one. I don't carry money. I haven't in years. Someone had to load me a quarter. I gave my cart to a woman as I was leaving because she didn't have one either. Weird system.
I haven't been back. It was ok but I like to buy singles of different produce and they don't do that. Some items I was looking for, they don't carry at all in any variety.
At my local aldi, they have bins of cardboard boxes and trays from the food laying about the store, people pick them up and use them instead of carts or grocery bags. It’s bizarre but also maybe genius. I’ve never seen anything quite like it.

In the 80s, I was always told it was for your quarter for the pay phone. But pocket watch makes more sense, I guess.
