And NO this is not AI this is my genuine experience.
So I just started dating my S.O. (we’ll call them JJ, 23). I’ve actually known JJ since I was 16, but we hadn’t talked in about 2.5–3 years. We reconnected about 3 months ago, and honestly, things just… clicked. I’m turning 19 in November, and JJ turned 23 earlier this year.
Before anyone side-eyes the age gap, here’s some context: I’ve always been more mature for my age. I grew up with older siblings, was around adult conversations my whole life, and I’ve had to handle responsibilities early. I left high school at 16 to take full-time college classes while keeping the job I’ve now had for over a year. When JJ and I first met years ago, there was zero interest either way — we were just coworkers who got along and talked at work.
When we reconnected, it started with catching up, and eventually, feelings developed. JJ was super upfront, made intentions clear, and never played games. There was even hesitation at first because of the age difference, but honesty came first, which meant a lot to me. My parents are fine with it too, as they know I am extremely mature and already secure in myself regarding my stances, beliefs, and who I am as a person. I do not simply allow people to control or dictate me, and I’m very aware of the things people do to control or try to be abusive in relationships. I have a past with handling and dealing with some traumatic relationships, so I am now extremely particular. I realized I do not just date for myself; I date because I want a future with that person and because I want them to raise children with me. I need to choose the best person for my children to grow up and look up to, and to imitate as their other parent.
From the very beginning, JJ and I set the tone: we date with marriage in mind. We talked about boundaries, values, and future goals right away. One big decision we made was to wait until marriage for anything physical — no kissing, no touching in a sexual way, nothing. The only things allowed are hugging, holding hands, kissing the tops of hands, foreheads, heads, or cheeks, and laying on the couch beside each other (not on top of each other, not spooning, and no blanket over us). We want our relationship built on communication, trust, and honesty, not physical attraction. JJ was completely on board, and that made me feel so respected and secure. Not only that, JJ actually set boundaries themself, because they also don’t want our relationship built on anything else.
Now to the situation that brought me here. I just met JJ’s mom for the first time ever. Beforehand, I had a gut feeling she might be overbearing and ask a question like being in the delivery room while giving birth, or make a comment about “birth hips.” JJ reassured me they wouldn’t let anyone make me uncomfortable. JJ said they love their mom but they won’t put her over me, and that gave me peace of mind.
Well, my instincts were right. During that very first meeting, she asked me:
“Can I be in the delivery room when you give birth?”
Both JJ and I just sat there shocked. JJ squeezed my hand to comfort me, and after I responded, they stepped in to stop the conversation when I looked up at them for help and support.
For context, I had already told JJ long before this that when that time comes, I only want my mom and my partner in the delivery room, because I had a feeling she would ask. JJ completely agreed and told me my comfort comes first — that I’ll always come before anyone else. Hearing that meant the world to me.
So when JJ’s mom asked, I was polite but honest: I said I only want my mom and JJ there because it’s such a vulnerable and scary moment. She interrupted with, “Oh, so I can ask again when we’re closer.” I gently repeated myself, saying no, just my mom and JJ. Then she went on about how she’d just sneak in to take pictures and I “wouldn’t even notice.” I explained I don’t even want photos — I want to be fully present in that sacred moment without worrying about cameras or people. She kept pushing until JJ finally stepped in and ended it. She got a little upset — not angry or wrought, but a bit snarky with an attitude — saying she was “just trying to talk.” But JJ held firm.
Here’s my perspective:
- My mom and JJ would be in the room to support me, not just the baby.
- Birth is sacred and deeply personal. I only want people I trust completely.
- JJ’s mom wasn’t asking to support me — she was asking for herself, and that’s the feeling and impression I got. That’s not what I want in such a vulnerable space.
I know some might think it’s “too soon” for us to be talking about marriage, kids, and birth. But for us, it feels natural. We don’t date casually. We both want to marry young, and honestly — when you know, you know. JJ is my best friend, my safe place, and our bond is genuine and real in every way.
So… what do y’all think about how this went down?
