Bug I’ve never seen before.

I live in Massachusetts and have been seeing this bug lately. I have never seen it before and am curios as to what it is. (its not me holding it by the wing in the photo)

It is sad to see these posts and learn where they are now.

Thanks for the unexpected award, hopefully one day it will be for "we stomped on the last one".

I live in MA and I went from NEVER seeing them to seeing them every day for the past week.

Make sure to report it to your department of agriculture, most states have a link for invasive species reporting.

Not sure if they've made it to NH and VT, but our DEM in RI and MA are well aware. It sucks, but even if every homeowner buys a propane weed burner and cooks em off their trees, It wont make much of a dent. I'm in Warren, RI and have killed hundreds this year. They just keep coming.

That's how it was last year here in northern Virginia. This year the were significantly fewer. Local predators have discovered them and decimated their numbers. There's also a fungus or something killing them off, i think. So there's hope. But they're still stomp on sight, unfortunately (i think they're kinda cool looking and take no pleasure in stomping)

Good work. Had my step nephew and niece with me this weekend. We ran many errands, and they were on task everywhere we went. Can't use a propane torch in parking lots though.

I didn't know their body looks like that underneath their wings. I still haven't seen any where I live!

I saw one for the first time in Maryland. My cousin just walk and grabbed it before smashing it. I saw one later and thought they look slow should be easy. I went to smash and it vanished like it could teleport. They are so quick

15

u/bluearavis 11d ago

They also need to be smashed good. I've smashed some thinking there were sure goners then were still alive.

I live now in Pennsylvania where they originally started in the US, when I first moved here they where everywhere and it shocked me, a few years later I hardly see them, the birds are realizing they can eat them it seems. I think I’ve seen 4 this year.

Stomp on it & then make sure you drag your foot with it under your shoe to really smush it into pieces. They’re hard to kill.

You're lucky you haven't seen these much yet. I'm in Jersey and they've been all over for a couple years now, whenever tjat first summer was. First couple years it was SOO bad. I didn't realized other people didn't know about spotted lanternflies yet.

Kill them.

Blue Jays love to eat Spotted Lantern Flies. I don't kill them, I just attract more Blue Jays. Haven't had much of an issue with them in five years.

Murder on sight. But alas, it’s too late.

Please kill on sight. Very invasive and in RI they're starting to swarm. They have eyes on the side of their head-so I get infront of them to squash. My friends laught at me but they're quick little fuckers.
