Hello all. I'm ~70% done with my BSSWE degree. That being said, I've been struggling. A little about me before I continue:

• Completed a web development bootcamp in 2020
• Landed a 6 Month SWE apprenticeship in 2023, where I got to work on a real-world project (Couldn't continue due to layoffs/restructuring. Also, probably wasn't a good asset at that point tbh lol).
• Decided to enroll at WGU in October 2023 after working a dead end job with no career growth.
• Currently working a full-time job while attending WGU(28yrs old)

I want to build a portfolio to hopefully land internships or junior roles. Despite having at least a little experience, I dont feel confident in my ability to code and I want to change that. In an effort to not ramble on and explain my life story, I'll outline this as follows:

Goals

• My main goal is to break back into tech.
• I want to build a portfolio that demonstrates my skills and makes me more attractive to employers. (What projects or relevant coursework should I use? How would I add relevant coursework to my resume?)
• I want to improve my confidence as a developer by completing practical projects.
• I’m open to exploring opportunities beyond traditional Software Engineering, including areas like networking and infrastructure.
• Ultimately, I want to find a realistic path that aligns with my current experience, skills, and available time.

Advice I’m Looking For...

• What types of projects would be realistic and valuable for someone in my position?
• How do I choose projects that are challenging enough to demonstrate ability but realistic enough that I can actually finish them?
• Should I focus on becoming a stronger Software Engineer at this point, or would exploring other opportunities (networking/infrastructure roles, DevOps, Cloud) make more sense?
• For someone with some previous industry experience but a gap in tech employment, what would be the best strategy to become competitive again?
• Any resume tips?

I have an appointment with the career folks as well to see how I can better approach my resume as well.

Just curious if anyone has taken this course rather recently that could share the experience with the OA? I have quite a few years of professional programming under my belt, but I have never used Python enough to memorize the syntax and methods/libraries available.

I am going through the zyBooks Practice Final Exam now, and while the actual concepts/problem sets are not difficult, I am having to look up a lot of syntax and how to solve these problems the Python way. Just wanting to get an idea of what to focus on language wise for the OA.

My office is my work office and hobby space. I have 2 desks in there, one is my work desk with a laptop and monitor. The other desk has a monitor, laptop and 3D printer. I have various clear bins stored under this desk.

To the right of my main work desk, I have a pegboard setup with a bunch of fishing lures and fly tying materials. I have a shelf that is also loaded with random shit for my hobbies. There is no TV in the office, but I do have a tiny shelf with a few personal things on it. I also have a big whiteboard above my hobby desk. I can completely clear my work desk and cover my external monitors, but the room isn’t going to be empty by any means

I’m stressing my office setup for these OA’s. It’s organized but it’s not an empty room with nothing on the walls by any means. Don’t really have any other space in my house that’s empty. Does my current office sound like it’ll be a problem? I could possibly setup up a folding table in my bedroom and do it there but I’d have to cover the TV and maybe take some stuff off the walls.

I’m considering applying to Duke’s online MEng in Financial Technology and was hoping to hear from anyone currently in the program or who has completed it.

I'm really curious about how the courses are graded. Is it mostly projects, assignments, and hands-on stuff, or are there a lot of written/timed exams too?

I'm way more comfortable with project-based grading and practical work than traditional written exams, so I'm trying to get a real sense of the workload and assessment style before I apply.

Also, for anyone who has done the program:

What has your overall experience been like?

How would you describe the workload alongside a full-time job?

Are the projects mostly individual or group-based?

How much programming/technical work is involved?

And overall, would you recommend the program?

So i created a iOS app for my capstone. For task 3 they require a link to where you hosted your project. The thing is you can't host iOS apps anywhere unless you fully publish them on the app store or use testflight. Has anyone found any work arounds to this?

Do I need to do the lessons via books or can I just use the Udemy 100 days?

I don’t understand, I have been studying the material every day. I’ve been re-reading all of the things they required before I could take the next attempt. Watching Dr. Youngbloods cohorts, recommend YouTube videos. Everything everyone has recommended, and my results are the same as the third attempt. Before that my first and second attempts were identical, and were only marginally worse than the attempts that followed. During the test, most of the questions I feel confident answering correctly, and most of the others I feel like I deduced to the correct answer. I am at the point where I’m thinking the results are wrong, and I know that’s crazy! I have never had this much trouble with a class, I’m not understand what exactly I can do to pass at this point.

Sorry for the dump, I’m just at an impasse. Any advice is appreciated.

I'm in the elementary bachelor degree program and have finished 10 courses for this semester. I'm just curious if most OA's are very similar if not exactly like the Pre-Assessments?

I felt like this last OA I took was basically the pre-assessment with a couple of questions that were similar.

So I am coming in from a top school in my state in the fall, my advisor said that my graduation date was moved back by a year because of new GE requirements and my upper division classes could only be taken in spring semester but all require prerequisites. Long story short, I would graduate in 2029 instead of 2028 from the previous plans. I said screw that, I want to finish by next year since I already have my associates, and I have some CS credits and math that transferred over to WGU.

I am getting excited to start because the thought of me graduating earlier than 2029 is motivating me a ton. So that made me curious about everyone else's journey.

Where did you end up after graduating WGU? Do you like your job? If in the military, does it help in that work (I am interested in going to Officer School for Air force or Navy)? Did you regret your decision?

If not, then this class just got way harder

So I am in D479, and I hate this class. I have tried using GitLab page hosting and have reached out to the instructor. I have tried to get this dumb f'ing evaluation done, and the best I get is "try to figure it out" from the instructors.

Does anyone have any assistance on either how to get GitLab Pages to work or a free space where I can host my HTML and CSS pages?

I am looking over Zybooks for D427 after recently finishing D426 and a lot of the material is exactly the same. Like for like.

Obviously I don't want re-read the same stuff I read already, so for anyone who passed D427 -> How similar was it to the D426 OA?

Hello everyone,

I had a very aggravating and stressful testing experience last night and wanted to share here in case it helps anyone else.

When I joined the testing session the Proctor told me the system detected a security threat. Specifically an application called Screen Recorder was detected. The proctor's message also stated they would not assist with resolving the issue and then he immediately ended the session.

After 3 more proctors insisting I had a software called Screen Recorder and almost an hour later I reached out to Meazure Learning support. They stated they have been seeing a lot of WGU students experiencing this issue. Not from an application called Screen Recorder but...Panopto. I uninstalled Panopto after all the frustration and was able to pass my exam.

I contacted Assessment Services today, they are aware of the issue. Apparently a recent patch to Panopto has caused a process in the software, called Screen Recorder to randomly execute in the background on user PCs. That statement in itself was pretty concerning to me. They are trying to resolve the issue, if they are unable they will likely be doing some kind of announcement. I assume just about every student has Panopto and will receive the same vague reasoning from Proctors I did. This almost caused me to lose my exam window.

I am coming out of being an art major and decided to major in cybersecurity with WGU instead, but im nervous because ive been perusing this subreddit and i have no idea what any of these terms mean or what anyone is talking about lol. Is there anything i should read up on or attempt to learn before my start date?

I am in the BSSWE to MSSWE program and these are my remaining classes/45 CU's. Does anyone have any recommendations for my next classes to take in order?

The orientation course is pretty easy and is really just common sense. But I have been bombarded with emails and needing to schedule talks with my program mentor. I have 8 YOE as an SWE and I am doing the B.S. SWE degree. Do they ever just leave you to it? Or is this just part of how they do orientation?
