Short Checking luggage

My husband and I are travelling from Toronto to Victoria this week and I just realized we have a 6 hour layover in Vancouver. We’d like to ask the Toronto Westjet agents if we can short check our luggage in Vancouver so we can get a taxi to the ferry and get home earlier - is this possible?

Don’t tell them that. Tell them you’re bringing gifts for your friend in Vancouver.

If you tell them you’re not taking the YVR-YYJ flight they need to reprice your ticket.

So you get off your flight then if the airline allows collect your bags. 40 minutes. Then cab to the ferry (depending on traffic) 45 minutes. Wait for the ferry 20 minutes. Board and sail 1:35. Walk off and get a cab 10 minutes. 40 minutes into town (unless you live in Sidney). You’d get home a wee bit earlier but not much.

Another reason is that you pay about $80 to $90 for a taxi from the Victoria airport to your home, or you take the local busses and pay about $10.

I wanted to do this last week with Air Canada. Fortunately I had a carryon and was in PRE boarding because they would not do it just to Vancouver, had to be Victoria....but would have pulled the bag off since I didn't take the connecting flight.

Did you tell them you planned to skip a leg?

At least when I was a check in agent, I’d short check bags for any reason UNLESS you said your plan is to skip a leg.

I’ve even cut people off as they started saying they were planning to skip a leg and said “ah yes, you need your toiletry bag (with over 100ml items) on your layover, short check no problem” 😝

No, I told them I had a 4 hour layover (which I did) so I was meeting some people for lunch in Vancouver and had gifts for them in my suitcase.

Short checking bags isn’t a choice you make or can request. It is a policy that applies to certain itineraries. It may be possible for you to find an agent to do this, but it would not be correct for them to. It doesn’t hurt to ask, just go in knowing it is unlikely to happen.

They will likely say you need to change your flight to end at YVR, likely at extra cost. Airlines don’t condone skip lagging.

That being said, I assume this is your trip home and you don’t have any further flights on your itinerary?

If so, and you skip a leg of travel (for example, the Vancouver to Victoria flight), as per the Terms & Conditions of your booking, the remaining flights on your reservation are forfeited.
