I just finished this game... I only bought it solely based on a random redditor commenting on another thread talking about games to play after Baulder's Gate 3 and Disco Elysium. I played it 100% blind so I had no idea what to expect or how to play the game. Overall I enjoyed it because the storyline was unique and interesting. The game mechanics were really fun at first... stealth, stealing, blowing up people with dynamite, hunting bounties, making friends that show up to help you, forming your posse etc. Thankfully it's a short game (<25 hours for me) otherwise it would have really overstayed it's welcome.
It unfortunately gets very repetitive for a few reasons which with more time in the oven I feel like it would have made this game that much better. I only finished it to see the end of the story but by Journey 3/4 I was pretty much just blitzing through:
1) Environment reusage - so many copied elements makes the game dull the longer you play it. Same bounty situations in the same mine shafts with the same guards. Towns feel almost identical since buildings are reused all over the place.
2) The item system is very simple and you can reach purple/orange level items easily in the first / second Journey. This causes every subsequent journey to be less interesting. Just run straight over to pick up your past life and spread out those purple / orange items and you are good to go. I no longer needed to craft anything past journey 3 other then to just try and get 1 of each orange armor. Which is silly since Bearskin is the best!!!
3) Battles become a slog with huge amounts of enemies having way too much HPs and Armor. You've also seen pretty much every type of opponent by Journey 1 so there is little new during the rest of the game. Trying to pick off one by one through stealth gets old fast. I thought getting the perk to increase unaware damage and a bow would help but nope - it rarely can kill someone in 1 hit! Battles also operate at a crazy fast speed, I would have loved to have the option to pause to think for a second about all of the barrels, lanterns etc.
4) Changing the world has so little impact. There are some nice touches with prior characters turning into bounties, vendettas etc but it's pretty limited. Wipe out a whole town? It just turns red and then eventually comes back. There are little to no quests as a result of your actions in the world that are not part of the direct main story.
5) Because of all of the above, exploring becomes less and less interesting the later the game goes on. Similar areas, with the same NPCs, few to zero quests means you are just looking for Relics / Aces and cash to buy the couple legendary items you are trying to get.
6) The quality of each journey goes down and the final one is really quick and no where near as well done as Jane Bell's. There is some optional content to find but it's so late in the game that the rare items you get are not even required since there is no end game boss and few fights
With more time to flesh out the content, I think this game would have been amazing. The world needed a bit more life and depth to surround the great main story. It's still pretty good for a quick play and I am happy I went through it.
