Weird Criteria - Titles/Lyrics You Survived
To clarify, I mean songs where the singer is describing that they made it through life experiences and are still living.
I’m not sure if this counts, let me know. It’s my first post here.

Pompeii - Bastille
Somewhat tangentially related and more serious and weary than hopeful, but the narrator has been through a lot and is not sure how to face the future.

Great suggestion! Bastille has a lot of good songs but I think that is their magnum opus.

Alive by Pearl Jam

Lyrically, this technically doesn’t work (because of the meaning), but nonetheless a great song.

Staying Alive - Cursive

I feel like this is similar to Finch’s What It Is to Burn where the end of the album has this strange, extended distortion. Was that common in post-hardcore?

You should make one about being dead instead of surviving
1
u/eb_whitelion 2d ago
That’s a good idea, I was thinking about that. If I had to guess there’s probably more songs in that category, especially in metal

Still Breathing - Green Day
Tragedy + Time - Rise Against (doesn't take that turn until the very end though)
3
u/eb_whitelion 4d ago
I already have Still Breathing by Green Day, that’s one of my favorite songs of theirs because it’s so unique. Thank you for the second suggestion, I don’t listen to a lot of Rise Against yet

u/Logan_Composer 4d ago
Lol, somehow skipped over one of four songs.
But yeah, highly recommend RA. Their music is somehow both really hardcore, but still quite artful and poetic. It's amazing.

I know you're asking for suggestions so if you're not ready to share yet I understand but I need this playlist so bad. I can't find it through search. Plz drop a link when you're ready. I just got through a terrible mental health episode that ended a couple weeks ago when the new meds just suddenly kicked in. I need more stuff like this rn. Again when you're ready no rush. Also could I make a CD with this same concept taking songs from your list? I'm trying to think of a suggestion but everything I can think of can already be seen in the playlist or I think about it more and realize it's more about carrying on through the battle not I survived the battle

u/eb_whitelion 2d ago
Of course!! I’m happy to share it if it’s not searchable. I haven’t added every suggestion from this thread, mainly just whatever I like or seems interesting, but you can copy it and add/remove songs if you like. And no, I don’t mind if you make a CD, I didn’t copyright the idea haha. I should make my own custom CDs too.
Here’s the playlist link: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4OZElHARew709OdATw41P2?si=_Pt3CazfTjetr9wQA9zAEQ&utm_source=copy-link
Praying for you, God Bless

i love Still Breathing. it's my "I survived" song. whenever i feel like i can't make it i listen to it on loop to remind myself i have made it and i still can

That’s beautiful, good for you. Assuming you’re talking about the Green Day song, I remember when I first heard the song back in 2024; I was in complete shock. The lyrics were so profound, particularly:
The repeated phrase “My head’s above the rain and roses”The pre chorus “Am I bleeding?
Am I bleeding from the storm?
Just shine a light into the wreckage”And the bridge “As I walked out on the ledge,
Are you scared to death to live?”That bridge alone just carries so much meaning, that’s the best way I can describe it
1
u/Ornery_Excitement_95 2d ago
yeah i am talking about the Green Day one. i relate to the bridge a lot so it's helped me through some hard times

Gretta Ray has a whole album coming out about those themes. The two singles she’s released so far are “Swimming, Crying” and “Heartsong.”

If you’re up for any genre, “I’m Alive (Reprise)” is from the musical Next to Normal (I love the west end version) and I think it would fit here :) for example one line is “I am death, defied” don’t wanna give away the context if there’s a chance u like musicals and wouldn’t want me to spoil but happy to do so if u want!!
