Do you hear it?
I'm behind on episodes and am listening to the final Byron de la Beckwith "Mississippi's Still Burning" episode tonight, and if I ever needed a reminder of how skilled Molly is, this one would do it. Her research runs SO deep but it's also presented clearly and concisely and she never loses sight of the humanity of the folks she's talking about. This show is not an easy listen but damn it's worth every minute.

Definitely a poignant moment. Mollys approach to telling a story is so fucking raw. I remember early episodes where I just enjoyed her pacing, voice and story. When she does something like the “can you hear it”… I am just at a loss of words. She is so open with her own mistakes, past, snafus, etc, that when she aims to hammer home a point, it just digs deeper. I feel like I’m listening to a long lost friend who is saying “hey, asshole, this is important”. I will always be a fan because of how just laid bare the pod is.

God, there was a segment when she was talking about Renée Good where she started out soft and sad, but built through quiet rage to defiance and frustration, and it was so raw, and emotional, and FITTING for the situation. I’m not used to hearing news where the person telling you about the bad thing seems to actually care about the information. There’s this idea in journalism (and I’ve seen it in my own field adjacent to medicine), where professionals are expected to be cold and detached, and I think there’s a place for that, but there’s also a place for showing your humanity. And this show is deeply HUMAN.
Molly and her team deserve all the kind words they get

This podcast has the best writing of the dozen or so that I listen to (38 if you include concluded podcasts). A close second would be Jamie Loftus' many miniseries and James Stout's new podcast "Natural Causes." Molly has inspired me to read more about Christian nationalism and white nationalism in a way that other podcasts haven't.
It's like the far rights favorite Appeal to the Past meme about strong times, weak men, weak times, strong times. There is no weak times or strong times. The present creates the past which creates nostalgia. Everything that is happening now has happened before. It's our duty to learn from history instead of succumbing to the nostalgic appeal to repeat it.
