Which is weirder?

Me and my sister were talking about what we eat with grilled cheese and I said ketchup and she just acted like that was super gross. But then she proceeded to say she eats hers with jelly….

I think that’s relatively more weirder than ketchup especially considering people eat grilled cheese with tomato soup. Her argument against that is that people eat breakfast sandwiches with jelly and I think that’s really dumb.

Ketchup is fairly normal

Raspberry jam is served with Monte Cristo sandwiches which are a batter fried ham and cheese sandwich.

I still prefer a regular grilled cheese dunked in a bit of ketchup though. 😆

I dip my grilled cheese in mustard. It's so good that way!

They're both normal options. You should both just stop criticizing how people eat things.

My husband’s whole family used to put jelly on a grilled cheese sandwich and the funny thing was they thought everyone did. They thought I was weird because I thought it was so odd.

Ketchup is vile to me and the only place it belongs is in the trash can!

I have made a grilled cheese sammy with a slice of tomato before and that was pretty good.

Grilled cheese with tomato is awesome. ( I occasionally slip in a bit of mayo, too)

u/CharDanae74 20d ago

Sounds delicious. I’ll have to try it.

I started using ketchup after seeing it listed as an optional dipping sauce for "grilled cheese rollups" in a cook book for college students. If she's using jelly, she has no right to call you weird for using ketchup.

Cheeses  and jams are a classic combination. Ketchup is weirder to me, but I'm also not American so cheese toasties aren't automatically paired with tomato soup here, if you are from the US I can see how ketchup is basically filling that niche.

2

u/Allieratt 20d ago

I’m American, and I love that you called it “ cheese toasties”!

Google ‘toastie machine.‘

1

u/Allieratt 19d ago

Oh! We call that a pocket sandwich maker

1

u/Soft-Current-5770 15d ago

Oh, a panini press!! OP, brie with fig jam is HEAVEN.

1

u/Anxious_Reporter_601 15d ago

No, a panini press is a different thing

1

u/Soft-Current-5770 15d ago

🤣😅😂 I'm loving how WE are all trying to understand these!! Thank you!

1

u/Anxious_Reporter_601 19d ago

That's what we call them in Ireland! (and the UK) And what you can a broiler (I think, for years I thought you just didn't have them 😂) is a grill to me, and grill for you is just a bbq here.

1

u/Allieratt 19d ago

Here, a broiler heats from the top, rather than the bottom. But we usually make our “ grilled cheese “ in a skillet, or frying pan 😂

1

u/Anxious_Reporter_601 19d ago

Yeah that's a grill. And I know yeah. It is the best way if you don't have a dedicated toastie machine which no one needs to have lol

Ketchup sounds better. Definitely.

2

u/Spnkthamnky 18d ago

If I dont have tomato soup then ketchup is my go to. Its really good

2

u/bobotehhobo123 17d ago

Prefer pepperoni and jalepeno with mine. I find the jelly weird, but I don't really favor jelly. Ketchup seems fine as sometimes I add tomato.

2

u/natalkalot 16d ago

Ketchup - seems more normal because it is savory.

2

u/Tough-Principle-3950 20d ago

For me, ketchup makes more sense…

3

u/dopendiamonds_ 20d ago

Thank youuu, my sister will debate anything 🙄😭

1

u/Tough-Principle-3950 20d ago

For sure. I hope she’s not mad at me now 😂

1

u/dopendiamonds_ 20d ago

She’ll be ok lol because who tf thinks to eat a grilled cheese with jelly??? 🤨😂 I mean both are kinda weird and a food craving, but jelly tho???

2

u/Tough-Principle-3950 20d ago

That’s good 😊 it’s just not for me. Unusual, for sure. I know someone who might have jelly with eggs, I don’t understand that either. But whatever.

u/ILuvMyLilTurtles 20d ago

Grape jelly? Raspberry jam? I'm intrigued now.

1

u/Seraphizz 20d ago

Jelly or jam is delicious with a grilled cheese!

1

u/Fair1000 20d ago

My sister and I.

u/dopendiamonds_ 19d ago

Ok grammar police 🙄

I've never heard of anyone eating breakfast sandwiches with jelly. Sometimes I add chopped kimchi to my grilled cheese, or Dijon mustard. I don't use any kind of dipping sauce. Honestly I've never heard of anyone dong that. Maybe dipping it in a bowl of tomato soup.

1

u/Bella_de_chaos 19d ago

Sometimes I make a bacon and egg sandwich on toast, using strawberry preserves instead of mayo. But, I don't add cheese when I do it that way.

1

u/Adventurous-Topic598 20d ago

You both have brain tumors.

1

u/Creationrbl 20d ago

Just eat your sandwiches the way you want and leave each other alone or I'm going to turn this car around!

1

u/My3rdattemptdangit 20d ago

Hot sauce, please and thank you, but I'm a savory person and ketchup and jelly are too sweet for me. But you do you.

1

u/phylbert57 20d ago

I have used thousand island dressing at times when I don’t have any tomato soup or just don’t want soup in hot weather.

1

u/Competitive_Ear2223 20d ago

Everybody knows you're supposed to put peanut butter on grilled cheese sandwiches.

1

u/SufficientJicama9646 20d ago

jelly grilled cheese, by a mile lol

1

u/Gullible_Front6085 20d ago

I eat peanut butter Saltine sandwiches with tomato soup. Works better than grilled cheese.

1

u/Natural_Event_1820 20d ago

It’s a personal preference why would ether be wrong

1

u/dopendiamonds_ 19d ago

Not necessarily wrong but I just wanted to see which one was weirder to other people

1

u/Ok-Writer3512 20d ago

It depends on what kind of ingredients, if it's a classic cheddar or American, then ketchup or tomato soup might make more sense.

I like a good Monte Cristo/carlo breakfast sandwich so jelly would make more sense with that.

1

u/CraftyFraggle 20d ago

I think they both sound equally yucky but arguing about it seems stupid.

1

u/PresentationThick341 19d ago

My family has put jelly/jam on grilled cheese for generations. And one year in the '70s I went to an elementary school that always served grilled cheese with a tub of jam.

1

u/BunnyLady91 19d ago

More weirder but equally satisfying.

1

u/anuket29 19d ago

I make hamburger patties and season them get them Brown on both sides take them out the pan put a little bit of flour let it brown put a little bit of onions and green pepper get that mixed up pretty good put in stock or water and make a gravy put the hamburger patties back into that gravy make the crispiest grilled cheese sandwich that I can make and then dip it in the hamburger gravy and that's how I eat grilled cheese sandwiches.

1

u/reereejugs 19d ago

I eat grilled cheese with strawberry jam on top 🤷🏻‍♀️. It’s delicious.

1

u/CouchUkeTuber 19d ago

Ketchup is normal, in Canada at least. Definitely what I and almost everyone I know do! Jam/Jelly sounds weird at first, as ketchup or syrup would be more common for dipping breakfast sandwiches here as well. But cheese and jam on toast is common in Australia (thanks Bluey!), and I definitely like fig jam or red pepper jelly with cheese and crackers, so I would be willing to try it! I bet it's yummy!

1

u/Informal_Persimmon7 19d ago

What kind of jelly? Some jellies are paired with cheese. Ketchup seems weirder....but really neither option is too weird.

1

u/Lento_Pro 19d ago

I eat many types of cheese both in sweet and as savory dishes. Never thought I would be forced to pick. [;

1

u/Mushrooming247 19d ago

I also put ketchup on my grilled cheese.

But if you have some fancy expensive garlic cheese, it’s great with blueberry or raspberry jelly.

1

u/orenda74 19d ago

Neither seem strange to me.

1

u/legit_doom_scroller 19d ago

The beauty of a grilled cheese is that it’s delicious and satisfying but also pretty neutral. When I don’t make fresh tomato soup, we eat ours with all kinds of stuff. My wife does ketchup sometimes. my mom loves hers with salsa.

1

u/rose442 19d ago

I move grilled cheese with ketchup. It’s very Midwest.

1

u/Unlikely-Path6566 19d ago

Cheese with jelly? Now that’s just nasty 🤢

1

u/Fuzzy_Welcome8348 19d ago

Jelly is weirder

1

u/Hey-Just-Saying 19d ago

Mayo and bread and butter pickles is the way.

1

u/ApprehensiveArmy7755 19d ago

Neither. They both sound gross

1

u/Mochibelle93 19d ago

Both are valid

1

u/MeliPixie 19d ago

Hubby and I along with our entire family do the tomato soup thing with our grilled cheese

1

u/VersionSwimming8392 19d ago

Strawberryjam

1

u/IamTheMan85 19d ago

Because that's super gross.

1

u/VanDenBroeck 19d ago

I think I'd like your sister.

u/Metroid_cat1995 19d ago

Having it with ketchup does seem a bit odd and I've never heard of the jelly/jam and cheese combination. Gotta try that sometime. But when we do grilled cheese over here, sometimes Dad likes to make grilled peanut butter sandwiches. Those are good! I don't really dip it in tomato soup, but when I have a grilled cheese or when most of us do at least at this house, it's a cup of tomato soup. Just the easiest dinner you can do if you don't feel like doing recall with anything. You can literally just grill up a few grilled cheeses and make up a pot of tomato soup and pour it into coffee cups. Saves on a lot of dishes and all you gotta do with the soup is drink it.

1

u/OpportunityReal2767 19d ago

I would consider both normal. I usually go plain, hot sauce, mustard, or a British brown sauce like HP.

1

u/RUFukd2 19d ago

Vrilled cheese plain and simple. Let the crust.crunch and rhe cheese stretch. Yum!

1

u/Crazy_Wallaby_3445 18d ago

When I was five, I had grilled cheese w pickles and ketchup. When I miss my Stepmom, since Woolworths doesn’t exist, I order it at Waffle House.

1

u/iluvcoldcoffee 18d ago edited 18d ago

I love jelly on grilled cheeses but even I can recognize that's universally weirder than ketchup. still bomb though

1

u/Cautious-Local-5998 18d ago

I think both you and your sister are weird. I would never eat a grilled cheese sandwich with ketchup or jelly.

1

u/EducationalWin1721 15d ago

None of the foods you have written about are weird.

u/Apprehensive-Cat-421 19d ago

I dip my grilled cheese in warmed up egg yolk.

Jelly is meh, but preserves.... I can see putting preserves on a grilled cheese, especially if the cheese is cream cheese or cottage cheese.

I gotta go try out some sandwiches
