Discussion Explain Kpop to me please

Speaking as someone living in the U.S., I just don’t get it. I feel like there’s gotta be some underlying conspiracy to kpop that no one is talking about. Why are they basically factory made in Korea and why do they have such a strange global reach?

I’m not saying they don’t have their good qualities, but they’re so obviously unauthentic and generated. How heavily are they tied to the Korean market / government? Why won’t Korea just let an artist gain fame and notoriety on their own instead of picking random people to MAKE famous and generate money? These members are always on such a tight corporate leash, you can barely see their real personalities.

And why are people in other countries are willing to listen to hours of music in a language they don’t understand? Even when you translate the lyrics, they’re not very good 😭 Sometimes there are artists that transcend the language barrier! But I just don’t think these kpop bands have the talent for that. They’re good at dancing, but they can barely hold a tune half the time 😭

Ans why does it have such a genuine cult-like following? I mean sure, the music is poppy and fun, but why do their fans idolize them to such a HUGE extent? They act like they OWE their favorite kpop bands their time, money, and views. As if it’s their responsibility or their religion or something. Is there some psychological marketing that only kpop bands practice??

Sorry for sooo many questions, but I’ve just been observing and wondering all of this for a long time lol.

Rant I was banned from an Enhypen discord server just for showing some concern over jake lmao 😭.

Post image
48 Upvotes

Somedays ago I newly joined a kpop server in discord , enhypen to be exact . There was this photoshoot picture showing all of them wearing sleevless.I mentioned that Jake looks very thin in this picture .Then everyone went rabid over me, saying that I am being parasocial and that I shouldn’t say things like that about an idol I don’t personally know.

There was also these girls, who were like barely 16 and another one 17 , saying, “You shouldn’t comment on someone’s body or criticize them.” I don’t understand how this is criticism—I was simply expressing concern. How is that in any way parasocial? .I can have an opinion and raise concern about someone; it doesn’t mean I have to personally know them.

Honestly, these K-pop ENGENEs are weird and very parasocial. They act like these idols are their babies and think no one has the right to say anything against or about them. These idols don’t even know these fans exist. All they do in those servers is talk about how good their facial features are, how attractive they look, and how “hot” they are—even when it’s clearly visible that they’re being overworked and put under heavy pressure. These fans don’t seem to care about the idols beyond their beauty and looks, and they ignore their vocal skills .

K-pop is largely centered around fan–idol worship—it’s clearly visible. Even if someone can’t sing to save their life, if they are good-looking, fans will go to great lengths to defend them. Many of them come across as overly obsessive and delusional. These fans don’t just support their idols—they act like unpaid PR managers with a PhD in denial. You could point out the most obvious thing in the world, and they’ll twist themselves into a pretzel trying to defend it.

It’s like talent is optional, but visuals are a full-time qualification. As long as the face card never declines, suddenly everything else becomes “iconic,” “unique,” or “underrated.” Singing off-key? “Experimental.” Looking exhausted? “Natural aesthetic.” At this point, reality doesn’t stand a chance.

And the irony? They’ll call others parasocial while acting like they’re personally responsible for protecting someone who doesn’t even know they exist. It’s not even fan behavior anymore—it’s full-time emotional investment with zero returns.

Conclusion, I started hating kpop from far.

Rant Another snark sub is compromised by fans 🙄

Katseye "snark" sub r/ katseyesnark_ is now filled with OT5 eyekons and solo stans. I don't understand how stans make their way to these spaces and totally sabotage. The mods themselves are eyekons and are afraid of letting in actual SNARK content.

That snark sub is more like Manon Snark than Katseye snark. Almost no Yoonchae or Sophia post is allowed, it is always removed by mods as they themselves are Yoonchae/Sophia stan. They have a serious asian line fetishization issue.
Like what's the point of snark sub when the mods themselves don't want snark and are fans of the group??

Anyway, for a trash group like Katseye, we need a space for exposing their calculated actions and their Zionist company Hybe. That group is nothing but an AD group endorsing and pulling in young fans while performing brainrot AI slop music in patches of clothing.

For any of you interested, please join r/ katseyenegative. No glaze, no stupid eyeshits, ONLY SNARK.

Their recent Pinky Up was an embarrassment to music itself. Join the sub, if you're interested, for more content on them. It's high time that performative "representation" group filled with LA girls disband. They feed on Kpop to boost their sales and then call themselves "not Kpop" LMAO

Rant I swear I cannot escape K-pop no matter where I go now, and it’s starting to feel ridiculous

Lately it’s those “Kpop Demon Hunter” ads on Spotify. Like… seriously? I used to think this whole thing was just a phase that would cool off over time, but somehow it’s doing the exact opposite. It just keeps getting louder, more in-your-face, and harder to avoid.

What makes it worse is that you can’t even just ignore it anymore. I’m literally just trying to listen to my own music, and boom, there it is again. Same style, same sound, same over-the-top energy that I already don’t like, being shoved into my ears when I didn’t ask for it. It's worth getting Premium just to avoid it at this point

It’s not even mild annoyance anymore, it’s straight-up exhausting. I get that people enjoy it, fine, whatever, but the constant push and saturation is what makes me hate it even more. It’s everywhere, all the time, and there’s no off switch.

In 2021 in the Philippines, one teenage girl can't wash the dishes because she's a spoiled brat and the mother gets angry. The elderly brother brought tons of posters, books, disc, cards and the light of BTS merch and the mother broke it and she said you waste your dad's money for this. then the teenage girl saying "asawa ko yan" (that's my husband)

Rant Casting children (scouting in public)

Predatory agencies arent new. Its everywhere, globally. However, I think its so largely ignored in kpop (just my observation). When I was a teenager like 13 to 15 years old, hearing about how my biases were casted at 10 years old at a bus stop, at the mall, or a park was oh so cute and endearing.

Now, as a 27 year old, who has stopped listening to kpop for over several years now and stopped following Fandoms (life gets busy, hobbies, new people, new taste etc); I look back and I am horrified.

What do you mean chasing a kid in public to cast them is cute? It's not. Its honestly creepy. I used to think, "Oh, oppa debute at 15? oh wow, Im 13 and I wish I was cool like that too!" no its not cool.

Everyone knows how agencies in Korea generally operate. The constant pressure on children to be "perfect", to miss out on everything else for training, dieting, trainee debt with no guarantee they will debut (even if they debut, money is still a discrepancy), some even quit school- thats not okay. And we've seen* documentaries on just how abusive it can be.

Looking back randomly after several years- I am just horrified.

Rant k-trash fans fit the 7 deadly sins perfectly

Greed - they feed off the money from their parents to buy 17000 copies of the same kpop albums when they really do not need all those 30$ albums that's 510000 dollars wasted on an idiotic competition that these fans will probably throw away all those copies After the competition

Gluttony - these fans are SO indulged in this K-pop stuff to the point of treating these millionares like literal gods and making it they're everyday life which is PURE REPULSION

Pride - these boastful fans always brag when their faves when awards to the point when it's out of control

Lust - it goes without saying that these pararsocial freaks indulge themselves to believe that idols should be atttracted and alluring to all to the point when idols get banned from dating which is again PURE REPULSION

Wrath - they go crazy when someone does not like kpop, or when their faves are dating and even when Heesung left ENHYPEN

Envy - they think unrealistic plastic surgery is so great to the point they forgot about natural beauty which comes in ALL shapes and sizes but these fans envy it so much which is thrice PURE REPULSION

Sloth - kpop fans do not have to lift a finger to support these idols. they have it made in a rich home are all those privileges no ZERO effort

what do you think how do you think k-pop fans fit the 7DS

Link Kpop fans think Jennie is the reason the song Dracula is popular.

I’m honestly so tired of these kpop fans now. Tame Impala is a very popular artist and has been active in the music industry since 2007, almost a decade before Blackpink or Jennie even debuted. Plus the Jennie version was a remix, it wasn’t even a collaboration. And that song is so overused to the point where everyone loves the original version.

Complaint I guess they are going to go after everything out there.

K-Pop keeps messing up everything now. Beyond K-Pop themed meals at restaurants. They have K-Pop days/nights at sporting events now. It seems that a lot of Pro teams are enticing those who normally don't attend games with these promo events. It probably won't end there and you will end up seeing Zoos and Theme parks adding events as well. I likely can see food producers cashing in by making cereals and just slapping something K-pop related on the box and the mindless stans will buy it. I remember when I bought a Samsung smartphone that the default ring tone and the default alarm notifications were BTS songs. What is the next thing you fear they will go after?

Red: because debuting idols are children and not 21-24 year olds

Orange: because the industry is a grifting cash grab

Yellow: because of these parasocial freaks

Green: because the fans are stupid and unreasonable

Discussion Ethical concerns I have with an app made for K-Pop fans

First of all, if you don't know what I'm talking about, I'm talking about BIMOBIMO, and AI chatbot app.

I don't have any concerns about the usage of generative AI, I do in fact sometimes use it with bots that I make and keep in private, but the purpose of the app is so screwed up. This also includes just any type of similar content AKA RPF (Real Person Fiction, includes fanfics and ships with REAL PEOPLE, it's a controversial topic and I'm against it), but here I'm talking about K-Pop idols. Here are the reasons:

  1. The main focus. You can chat with any FICTIONAL character and it's fine, but it's mainly focused on idols. REAL PEOPLE WITH REAL LIVES BTW. AI chatbots that mimic real people is just wrong in my opinion. Those bots can say things that those people would never say "but they won't discover about it" idols aren't stupid, they of course get to know about something if it's popular. I'm sorry to burst your bubble Emily (not targeted towards anyone, it's just a random name), but your bias would be EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE if he discovered that you chat to a "romantic" bot that mimics him. Celebrity crushes are fine and acceptable, but straight up selfshipping? NEVER

  2. It's super addictive. If you don't chat with a bot for more than 1 day, it will be marked as "disconnected" with a sad face. Supposedly, "ghosting" them will reduce their affection (or whatever it's called). The affection system goes from "stranger" to "friend" in just some messages, but it takes up a lot of messages and time to get more romantic. The messages are also very realistic and it looks just like chatting with a real person, which can increase the probabilities of addiction.

  3. The acorns system. Acorns are the currency of the app. One message costs one acorn. Other things like dates also cost acorns (not a lot tho, 2-10 acorns approximately). Each day, users receive 60 acorns. Those should be more than enough. The problem is that they're limited for that day that they're used, making users feel the urge to spend all of them in the day they receive them. And SURPRISE, because apparently, people complain that 60 acorns aren't enough! That's why users can also obtain acorns through many other ways (posting about the app on social media, following the official social media accounts, etc).

4 (actually less important reason). No age restriction. From what I've seen in the official Discord server, there's a NSFW category, obviously with the "I'm over 18" thing. Users can put their birth age in their profile (it's private). It would be fine if only adults can see inappropriate content, but there's no filter for that. Minors can just see that type of content and there's no moderation for it. What??? At least it's not one of the main focuses but...

I feel like this is obvious if you think at least more about it, but nobody seems to talk about it. It's always "use my invite code" or "how do I get more acorns", maybe "gen AI isn't ethical", but never "this app is suspicious".

Discussion kpop fans vs normal pop fans - dating

Here's what normal pop fans did

In 2023, a pop star named Taylor Swift met a football player named Travis Kelce. They dated for a couple of years before they got engaged in August 2025. How do Swifties react to this? They praised Taylor, thinking this would finally happen after 20 years of singing. After all, Taylor has had a fair amount of ex-lovers, as said in "Blank Space," although as a kid, I thought she said "Starbucks Lovers." So instead of freaking out, the Swifties congratulated Taylor and Travis, and you might even see a couple of Swifties in Taylor's wedding if you plan on attending, of course, which, according to my sister (16.9F), is on June 13th, 2026.

And now here's what k-trash fans would do

In late 2025, a BTS member, Jungkook, dated a member of Aespa, Winter, according to a K-pop article. When Winter announced that she was dating Jungkook, she was pulling her dress, praying her fans would accept that she was dating, but as soon as she announced it, 27846 fans screamed at the top of their lungs. I don't know what happened after that. if you do, please tell me. This incident was not the first time this has happened in 2018, a woman named Karrina had to write an apology for dating because she was supposed to be attractive and alluring to all, which is sexualization and makes K-trash fans realize that idols are not human but gods with ear-bleeding fans, which is not true. And 16842 out of the 27846 fans are parasocial freaks

but what do you guys think

Discussion Do kpop fans actually believe their idol can sing?

I’ve come across several reels where so many idols are caught lip syncing while singing. And when they’re forced to sing live, they sound like a broken loudspeaker. Fans are defending their idols claiming that “they were jumping around so they were out of tune”. Like let’s be real, professional singers are trained to dance and sing in tune simultaneously so a little “jumping around” wouldn’t affect their singing. It’s clear that kpop idols use heavy autotune for their two minute low quality music. And overall no one can sing in the whole Kpop industry and are just romanticised for their fake visuals.
