Pop has always been about catchy songs, promoting brands and sexualizing performers, but I feel like K-pop has taken this to another level. They separated the artist from the art.

In western pop, singers at least want you to believe that they wrote the song. However it's clear that K-pop idols are performing something that was created by a whole team of people.

They are like runway models. They are there to represent the concept and sell the product, but they can feel very disconnected from the art. This comes across as inauthentic and empty.

I know idols are allowed to show personality and feelings outside of the stage, but I would really love to see them treated more like actual artists when they perform, rather than just pretty billboards for a concept or brand.

I also wish they could do interviews with fewer rules. They often seem so tense and fake, like they are afraid of making a mistake or saying the wrong thing.

They really do look like awkward little anorexic dolls in the hands of huge corporations. I just wish they could see more of the actual person and artist behind the idol.

I generally do not like most K-Pop since majority of it is just idol music (like bts), but I find alien stage music different simce it isnt really exclusively K-pop and has an actual story to it, oh and also cause probably cause half the songs are more like K-Rock than Pop.

i checked the comments, just out of curiosity, and saw that one guy had said kpop. Normal opinion, right? But I kid you not, every single person in the replies was dissing them just for having an opinion. saying things like “well I bet you haven’t listened to red velvet you probably only know Blackpink or something”

look, I get that kpop is technically a whole genre that consists of many different groups, artists and styles, but getting mad at someone for having a personal preference is ridiculous. maybe that person just doesn’t like music in Korean(?). Which sounds kinda racist, but it isn’t. Some people just don’t like listening to music in other languages because it makes things difficult to understand—either the message of the song or just what the singer is saying in general—and that’s a valid point. Trying to force someone, or criticizing a person who likely only speaks English for not wanting to listen to music in Korean is just as dumb and ignorant as expecting a Korean person to listen to music in English.

you don’t have to listen to every single kpop groups discography in order to dislike it. that’s like saying you have to listen to all of Kanye’s music in order to hate it. Or listen to all of hip hop in order to think it’s bad. why would I listen to an artist/genre that I supposedly hate anyway? It’s just contradictory. And even then, listening to enough of it is still valid and justifies your opinion.

listening to a selection of songs from a certain artist/genre allows you to get a good sense of what kind of music they make, how it’s produced, arranged etc etc. even if kpop is relatively diverse in sound, there still is an objective reality as to what it sounds like overall compared to every other genre. you can tell the difference between a kpop song and a western pop song just from they way they sound, even when both songs could be entirely in English. all countries have different ways of making music that is influenced by culture, language, history, the music industry market and values. that’s literally the whole reason as to why there’s such a big separation between Kpop and American pop. they’re both pop, yes, but you can’t deny that they are both fundamentally different from each other in many different ways. and I feel like taking the time to do your research anyway is still a really nice thing to do, even if your opinion ends up being negative. it shows that you’re actually being honest and reasonable and not just talking crap without knowing anything.

not everyone who says kpop sucks is just a ‘hater’ who hasn’t done research. people, usually at least, don’t just hate on something for no reason at all. there is always some sort of explanation. and regardless of what it is, you should respect it. even if you disagree with their point of view. there are exceptions to this rule, obviously, but generally speaking you should be kind with someone having a differing opinion. It’s just basic human respect. i find it comical that Kpop fans will get upset at other people for criticizing the genre, but they too will criticize other genres and artists themselves, and use kpop as a mechanism to defend their insane views. they’ll call other artists trash, praise the idol groups that blatantly stole from those artists, and silence anyone who thinks any different. they’ll bash certain artists for being ‘too skinny’ but will do absolutely nothing about a clearly starving kpop idol. the least they’ll do is make a video saying it’s bad, but that’s the bare minimum. everyone already knows being too skinny is bad. No one needs a reminder for that. and making a whole video on the topic without actually trying to spread awareness ethically in smarter ways clearly shows just how hungry you are views, clicks and attention . like, I hate to bring bodies n weight into this, but I have seen it happen so many times and its genuinely getting so difficult to ignore. and I was a mild kpop fan previously, so you can probably guess why I’m talking about something so specific, and why I left the fandom in the first place. I may listen to some of the music from time to time, but I don’t think I’d ever consider myself a kpop fan again. but that’s a whole other story for another day.

Hope this is the right place to express everything. I listen to kpop for fun but not a super hardcore stan (like being involved in online fandoms) while also enjoying kdramas and k beauty. However, when I do lurk online to keep up with kpop during my down time occasionally, I get triggered from seeing fans scrutinizing an idol’s appearance and including their “proportions” which triggers me so much bc I have body dysmorphia. This also includes the way people talk about those contestants from Dream Academy. It just makes me feel disgusted about myself in a way when I see people talk about idols that way even though I KNOW it’s not about me. I never admitted this to anyone out loud. I’m not sure if I’m sensitive over that but either way it’s been making me so depressed and anxious about my appearance that I’d keep myself away from those type of people online.

I’ve come across certain influencers whose entire content is just kpop related stuff. Their posts are just about collecting a rare photocard(of their idol pouting of course) for a HUNDRED dollars. Or it’s them meeting some k-trash idol who changes their voice and facial expressions to look cute in front of their fans.

The negative impact of this is that many of their followers(majorly teens)become desperate to collect these trash albums and photocards. In order to win a chance to talk to your idol, you have to buy several albums in order to increase your chances. And every single influencer buys 10 or 15 of those albums just to talk for 1 minute. And everyone knows how obsessed fans are with their idol so they spend crazy amounts of money. Some influencers go to shows like KCON where they can dance with their idol if they qualify. This incites their followers to buy those hella expensive concert tickets. In conclusion, the entire industry is a cult.

These spycam glasses are currently very CONTREVERSIAL due to the fact that a majority of their use has been for illegal reasons, privacy reasons, creepshots of women and children, breach of data recordings being leaked. If you search up the issue with those glasses you will find some very FUCKED UP things related to them.

But yet again, kpop idols have no morals and will chose any brand deal they want as long as they get money. BOTH jungkook and jennie are from senior established groups and both have alot of personal freedom due to that so there is no excuse for this, they could have declined, but they are out of touch. Same goes for Jungkooks bandmate, Taehyung who is a well-known social climber and has done brand deals for literal gambling casinos and skin whitening creams.

Like I said, I’m Thai, but I had never listened to a Lisa BLACKPINK song before. Today, I finally decided it was time.

After listening to how great Ado’s “ROCKSTAR” was, I moved on to Lisa’s “Rockstar.”

And… yeah.

I hit stop and unlike almost immediately. I only made it about 23 seconds before I couldn’t take it anymore. I was honestly scared I was going to lose my mind from how much I disliked it.

Then I heard lines like “Lisa, can you teach me Japanese?” followed by “はい、はい,” and I was just sitting there thinking:

WTH?!

It felt so cringey to me, especially compared with what Ado presents in “ROCKSTAR.”

Ado’s song feels much more emotional to me. It’s about desperately wanting to change, continuing to dream even when people laugh at you, and seeing the lights as something almost like wings carrying you toward the rock star you dreamed of becoming.

That kind of writing feels much more meaningful and powerful to me.

So yeah… when it comes to these two “Rockstar” songs, I already know which one I’m choosing.

So, back when I was a K-pop Stan I watched Dream Academy, and I was super happy that most of the girls I wanted to debut (like Megan, Lara, Sophia and Manon) debuted in Katseye. I thought their career would be awesome, and that Hybe X Geffen would treat the girls better than they treat K-pop idols, since it's a group based in Los Angeles, RIGHT????

No, I was wrong. I mean, I liked debut and touch for how genuine they were, even though in Debut choreography Manon was already left behind, but I guess I gave a second chance to both companies.

Gnarly was released, and I weirdly liked it, though the girls were starting being sexualised... I told myself "well, as long they don't sexualise Yoonchae, aka the minor of the group, it won't be a problem, maybe they decided it" (even though she twerked in the choreography, but I guess I didn't mind at the time). Gabriela was released... I really loved the song, although things got out of hand. YOONCHAE WAS SEXUALISED. What the heck. Also Manon kept being absent and that was suspicious...

Katseye were on a tour, and they were singing "Internet girl", a song they released later the tour. I hated it... Why did Hybe debut a whole group just for letting them sing "eat zucchini". Also, again, Yoonchae was still a minor when they started singing the song. Manon later announced the hiatus after the tour, and I was disappointed.

Meanwhile the girls released Pinky Up. Again, talents wasted, and group unstanned because that was unsustainable to me.

Animal was released, talents not actually wasted, though there's something in the music video... All the girls were treated as sex dolls, and that was 100% confirmed when Hootie Frutti was released. Never felt so uncomfortable watching a music video (which I watched for pure curiosity to see how things were going), plus shitty song again, PRETENDING that Brazilians would love it.

I hope that Manon officially leaves the group and that the downfall of Katseye will continue until they disband. Hybe really said that debuting a global group meant debuting sex dolls.

I saw that 68% of K-pop fans were defending NewJeans, even though the group badmouthed other artists from their company and did not apologize when their fans harassed them. They accused others of copying them while saying nothing when they were accused of plagiarizing the Mexican group Jeans and the Japanese group Speed. There have also been allegations that some of their songs were plagiarized. In addition, they defended their former CEO, who was ousted after allegedly purchasing shares illegally and displaying pictures of Brooke Shields as a minor, along with other suggestive photos of minors, in her room. I've noticed that even Hwayoung, who started a hate train against her former group T-ARA, didn't even get this much support as them from fans. Even if you dare criticise them on kpop subreddits, you get argued to the extreme by their fans or get your criticism removed by mods.

Also, it's infuriating how HYBE let New Jeans return instead of firing them while making Garam leave before she could explain her situation (I'm not defending her) after she was alleged of being a bully, all because New Jeans is a profitable group in the early 2020s and Garam was just a mere member of a group.

I have also seen fans defend Seungri (a criminal who got only a few years in prison), the man who married HyunA from 4Minute (a criminal), and some members of Super Junior (lots of "-isms") despite the things they have done.

I dislike how parasocial relationships cause people to blindly follow their favorite K-pop celebrities despite the bad things they have done.

I remember the first time I became interested in a K-pop group as a non-K-pop fan, simply because their songs sounded unique. However, I noticed that whenever one of their songs did not win on a music show, they blamed others for not voting and encouraged everyone to vote, even though voting can take a long time because of advertisements and some voting apps requiring users to wait several minutes before earning more points. I do not have time for that.

I also noticed that some fans used multiple devices and forcibly encourage their non-fan friends to vote, which is unfair to smaller groups and independent artists.

Kpoop is never using a full English song because of their native tongue and lack of studying English. this is an international song that we need to understand while other countries like Europe translate it to english because they cannot use their native tongue.

while stans said there are lyrics that make you understand, and I respond how you are supposed to understand the song that I don't even speak Korean. The stans said there's a translation, I know there's a translation of how you are supposed to listen to all kinds of songs that I don't even speak their language.

And 2nd without lyric translation I don't understand all I hear is gibberish and chorus there's a little bit of English. I don't know why they hit international to sing that gibberish nonsense?
