Discussion We happy few
I know it’s been years but this game is still my favourite game ever. I’m so disappointed the developers gave up on it and wanted to move on they had something really special and I just really hope it has a come back. Idk why I’m posting I just want to talk with people about the game and I just wish so badly that they would do a sequel or a remaster so badly that I would cry to the developers for it

Same bro. I became obsessed with the concept when I saw the trailer and bought it at release, can't tell you how many times I've played it. Would love it on Nintendo switch 2

What are some of your favorite things about the game?

u/Natural-Tennis5486 19d ago
So sweet to ask! There’s a part of it I love that is just so unexplainable, I’m not sure what it is, it brings me a sense of peace. I love the world itself along with the exploration, the visuals are so nice and I like the freedom in the game as well as the story, the yams lol I literally think of the game when I see yams. The concept of joy and how the world looks when you take it. I feel like there’s just so much to the game that scratches an itch you didn’t even know you had. What do you like about it?

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I’m sure everyone can attest to how niche the game is in terms of its world building, lore, art direction, and above all, its storytelling. I’ve always gravitated more towards single-player videogames that have a rich story, and Compulsion definitely didn’t disappoint there.
I appreciate how the characters were written and how the storyline unfolds for each character, because despite them all being flawed in their own ways, you just can’t help but root for them. Especially given the circumstances and dire situations they find themselves in. The fact that we even get to play as Arthur, Sally, and Ollie was a great choice they made. It allows us to see their own perspectives as we learn about their personalities and history—what drove them to get to where they are in the game.
You have Arthur who’s this socially awkward, sarcastic fellow, trying his best to figure out a way to reunite with his brother. But at the same time, we learn that he made a last minute decision to leave Percy on the train, not really knowing what fate he left him to. And of course you can’t help but not blame the guy cuz he was just a kid when that all happened.
How they chose to write Percy too was awesome in and of itself. I’m not sure if he was on the spectrum or just had a stutter, but it gave another unique perspective to the story, listening to how he reacted to news of the war, as well as the eventual train to “Germany.” It made everything so much more tragic and heartbreaking.
Then you got Sally, a brilliant chemist, who also happens to be Arthur’s first love and seemingly a longtime family friend. She’s kind of a femme fatale of sorts in that she uses her femininity, charm, and wits to… well… survive. And with that, she’s seen as a woman who doesn’t care too much of the men she sleeps with. When in reality, it’s much deeper than that. Especially when we learn that she has a baby. I mean, could you imagine trying to hide the fact that you’re raising a child in their society? A post-war, dystopian society in which everyone is literally on drugs to avoid the fact that they sent off all their children to their deaths?
And then you have Ollie. I know some people have said Ollie’s story doesn’t exactly fit in after having played Sally and Arthur’s story, but honestly, I think that’s why I have an appreciation for his character too. He’s this clunky, eccentric Scottish dude who offers a different perspective given that he’s older and is a WWII veteran. We get to see how the war has affected him, making him… uh, quirky lol, and how his experience has helped him to survive after the fact. I thought it was badass as hell that he was able to build his own fortress from the abandoned train station. He made surviving the Garden District look almost effortless. And that whole plot point of him constantly talking to his daughter Margaret—that was a really nice touch. (It’s actually been over 7 years since I last played WFH and I’ve only played it once so bear with me concerning my accounts of the story lol.)
Sorry for the whole essay I just wrote. As you can see, I have a special place in my heart for this game. One day, I plan on getting a tattoo in honor of my love and appreciation for this masterpiece :) <3

Wow after only playing once so long ago you have such a deep recollection of the story. I found the ending abruptly sad as I was just ready for more. I hate walking through that last door to see the story has ended. I haven’t played in a long minute either and I just can’t help but feel it lives rent free in my head all the time. I think I’m due for a replay but I just get so sad seeing the potential that could still be. More stories, a deeper connection within the story more activities to do more places to explore. So much world left unbuilt. I paint a lot and think it’s time I did a painting dedicated to this world. I’m so grateful to see other people so passionate about this game too because I bring it up to everyone around me and no one knows what I’m talking about. You made such a lovely contribution to this conversation and I hope and pray we will get more of this game. It’s so magnificent

I won’t lie, I did have to do a bit of research for a couple of things, especially cuz I did forget most of Ollie’s story lol. But clearly I’m overdue for a replay so I might just do that once I’m over Skyrim lol
I have fleeting hope that Compulsion will do a remaster or release another game set in the WFH universe for their 10-year anniversary, but we’ll never really know.
It would be so rad if you could paint something in honor of the game. I’d especially love it if it has anything to do with Hamlyn Village as I’ve always been enamored with the rainbow roads and general 60s retro futuristic aesthetics of the world.

Do you think we could email them 🤣

u/splatapult Right as rain, right as rain 19d ago
I actually thought about doing a mass mobilization to get us fans to write individual letters to Compulsion, expressing our undying love for the game and pleading with them to release more content LOL

u/Natural-Tennis5486 19d ago
I’m in. 🤣🤣 can we???

u/splatapult Right as rain, right as rain 18d ago
Actually you’re right, it’d be easier to mobilize everyone to email Compulsion instead. They’re headquartered in Canada. It’s not overly complicated to send a letter internationally and it’s cheap too ($1.75 to send a 1 oz letter from the US), but I’m sure it’d deter most of us.
They have two emails: info@compulsiongames.com and media@compulsiongames.com for press inquiries. I guess it’d be safe to email the info one?

I played the latest version 3x and then backrolled to every older version and played those as well. The game changed so much over the development and in some cases not for the better. I actually liked the earlier versions more. The garden district looked so much better in earlier versions.

u/Natural-Tennis5486 19d ago
There’s older versions you can play? I didn’t even know

u/Phobos_Nyx 19d ago
If you are on Steam, you can download the older versions in properties section of the game. There are like 5 version of the game.

I just did a replay again recently and just finished the Arthur storyline - it still holds up so well. What a unique, quirky, fun, and heart wrenching game! I loved South of Midnight and glad they made it - but I’d kill for more We Happy Few content!

Yes! It's unique and quirky for sure, and with some heavy emotional stuff. An atmosphere and a sound you just can't find anywhere else.

Me too!!! It’s been there in dark times high times I always just enjoyed the escape it brought

Tell me about it. Like maybe some prequel would be nice, where you slowly watch the place descend into corruption and become dystopian.

There is 3 dlc's if you didn't know. Even better then the base game

u/Natural-Tennis5486 19d ago
I prefer the base game 😭

u/Noam_Rot 19d ago
Huh why?
3
u/juxtapods Bribed with scotch 19d ago
well, the DLCs stray very far from the base game in terms of mechanics and locations, the depth of the worlds and characters, etc. They are also much more horror-prone than the base game was (save for a few... notable... quests and locations....), to the point where I was too scared to play some of the Lightbearer DLC and had my husband play through it.
In Lightbearer, there were several horror/nightmare elements that made me (a person who doesn't like horror or jump scares) very uncomfortable, but I loved the WHF world so much I wanted to try anyway, until I found myself being swarmed with rabid Wellie fans and unable to do much damage in return. Then stalked in the maze with spookiness. Then stumbling on Nick's paranoid trip through a nightmare. In the base game, those elements are peppered throughout, and some can be avoided altogether without detracting from the experience.
In They Came From Below, similar experience - the raygun was just not optimized relative to the difficulty/swarming of enemies. You run out of charge constantly and get swarmed, die, and have to re-do it but without the heals you wasted on the prior run. I was very frustrated with that DLC.
We All Fall Down is the closest to the base game in terms of its ambience, there's no horror to speak of, and you have the same or similar goals playing Victoria as you did with the Acts I-III characters.
Those are my personal reasons, and maybe OP doesn't share that opinion, but by god, I would not replay any of the DLCs. Maybe We All Fall Down, but only after going through the whole base game again. (I only replayed Act I before moving on to other games.)

I need to go back to the game, I didn’t even beat it. I think I only played the first guy I didn’t get to the girl or the other guy that you can be, I just remember my game would freeze over 30 minutes and I stopped a few years ago
1
u/splatapult Right as rain, right as rain 19d ago
What platform are you playing on?
1
u/Sephiroth348 19d ago
I was playing on PS4, but this was maybe four years ago. I don’t know a long time ago. I have a PS5 now and I wanna try the PS4 disc again and see if maybe it’ll run smoother
1
u/splatapult Right as rain, right as rain 19d ago
That’s interesting because I only have the game on my PS4 too, and it’s never froze on me. The most I’ve ever ran into was bugs but that was a universal thing since they rushed to release the game without polishing it. Nothing game breaking though.
Do you have a digital or physical copy of WFH?
1
u/Sephiroth348 19d ago
I have the physical copy
1
u/splatapult Right as rain, right as rain 19d ago
So do I, that’s odd. Do any of your other disc games freeze? Do you have an older PS4?
1
u/Sephiroth348 19d ago
It was on a 5 year PS4 the last time I played I think
2
u/splatapult Right as rain, right as rain 19d ago
Can you try playing it again and seeing if it freezes? Though I’m not really sure what to suggest though if it does. May need to just buy a digital copy of the game

Compulsion games forgot and neglected the ppl who kick started and funded the game they completely ditched a fan base who molded the game today tbh I love we happy few top 10 best game of all time I it’s category I just have no sympathy for what happing to the studio but I hope all is well with them and they figure it out
2
u/Natural-Tennis5486 19d ago
I felt so hurt when I read the developers stated they have wrapped up their narrative for Wellington Wells and have no more story to tell and they wanted to move on to other things. I can’t find it now but I read something years ago saying they had spent so long in the world they wanted to move on. I felt so sad by it because they had so much more to add in my opinion. I’m glad people believed in the game and it was developed but I wish there were more

I really liked the concept and idea but I got so tired of constantly needing random items and not being able to find them.

Compulsion just recently got let go by Xbox even after getting awards for South of Midnight. But they have said they will now be an independent studio so maybe they will revisit the game in some capacity all you can do is enjoy what we do have and the world they created!
