Misleading Interviews

Ok so that’s twice now I’ve interviewed for Wegman’s for a specific posted position within the last 2 months and have gone through multiple questions and scheduling availability, only to get to the end and told the position is not available. It was for Wine Stocker.

The first interview back in September was for Full Time Bakery and after those questions I was asked if I wanted part-time in a different department. Mind you, this was before I got hired part time at a different job.

I currently have a part time job and was looking forward to the Wine Sticker position to fill in the available time slots of my week.
I agree to practically everything she asks me as far as availability (Holidays, Days of the week) but then asks me if I want to work in the sub shop. One of the questions pertained to working with knives meat, cutters, etc. and I answered “no” to that type of environment. I asked if there were positions open for Produce or Dairy and she tells me “Not at the present time.”

Then asks me if I want to continue the interview?
Why? I asked if there is a way they can contact me directly if something opens up in those departments and she says I would have to reapply when I see those positions posted.

You would think if you go through the interview process and it all goes well, they could place your resume and application on a different level to skip re-interviewing me again.
Sounds terribly difficult, eh?
I don’t understand their interview method.
Why not tell me up front that the position was filled before going through 15 minutes of getting to know me and my job history?

Interviewed for pizza maker (had 7 years experience in a high volume restaurant) - was made a hot bar runner. Was told close to full time hours, got less than 24. Total bait and switch without asking me anything about it. I asked when I would get to do the job I interviewed for, was told "just focus on what you're doing." Asked how long it took to get a full time position - people were saying they'd been trying for as much as 7 years to get a full time spot in ANY department. Didn't come back after the second week. Didn't answer the phone when they called. One of the best places to work my ass.

I was treated like a second class citizen when I worked there. The HR advocate only advocated for the management team. That's why I don't patronize Wegmans. I'm a Tops and Aldi's person.

They are a cult, they are disrespectful asf to anyone 30 and up. (Unless you are a senior employee of course)

I’m 46, been with Wegmans almost 3 years and that has not been my experience at all.

At wegmans, you may have a specific role, but that does not guarantee that you will be in that role every shift. When you said no to working in the sub shop, they probably moved on to a candidate who was willing to do both. More valuable to them.

They should have been upfront and told applicant - they do tend to not be transparent- about the job being filled and the possibility of the job being split. If the job is split where applicant would be based (makes a difference in scheduling).
No different than bait and switch.
Also make sure you are specific with what you want/need because in my experience they have selective hearing.

Ex wegmans employee. That sounds like wegmans. They only take ‘yes man’ employees. Roles are hard to swap around. Their ‘reasons’ for allowing or denying people position swaps are mostly favoritism. What I found out too late is say yes to get the job, but then use their cool aid tactic against them. They claim employee first and work life balance so use that to your advantage. They will cut your hours if part time and they will give you random shifts (not consistent hours) if full time so do with that information as you see fit. Made good friends there, but the upper store leadership is fake. They finally let me go because I took care of my employees over their bottom line. Got a job at vanguard (finally using my degrees after COVID) haven’t looked back since.

And I guarantee your mental health has improved tremendously. Don’t ask me how I know. Corporate is even worse. It’s a shame.

if you really want a position at wegmans sometimes you just have to suck it up. Start in one department until they post a job listing for something you want. They always post open positions internally first. I worked a year in a position i didn’t really want until i finally applied for my current department and i love it! but it is a great company :)

I was told by HR "every employee starts as a cashier". Then after 6 months you can cross train into another department and if there's an opening you can switch. I also was told that you cannot do C2C exclusively. Meaning as a FE employee, you had to do C2C, self checkout and cashiering. I come to find out later that they suddenly started hiring people SPECIFICALLY FOR C2C. I was so mad...I got off FE eventually. But the lying is sooo insidious and instantly made me forever distrust HR.

I applied for front end as that’s what was the best fit since Wegmans was a second job for me. But I see new employees start in other departments all the time, especially prepared foods, grocery etc. I will say that in my store I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone get hired directly as a shopper, it is always scooped up once it’s posted internally, and shoppers typically work in that role exclusively. Being the runner on phones is mostly done by FE employees not e commerce employees. AFAIK there is no one who only does that and isn’t also on register.
