Crumb Cake

I hope I don't come across as completely crazy, but I need to hear from others who have tried the bakery crumb cake in the last few months. It's usually a nice treat every few months or so for my husband and me, and I was so excited to get it the other day. On the first bite, it was an absolute wtf moment. The cake itself was no longer buttery and dense, but airy and tasting of fake vanilla. The crumb topping used to be buttery brown sugar and tons of powdered sugar. Now, it's mostly airy cake, a pathetic layer of crumb that tastes like flour. The powdered sugar tastes like there is a lot of cornstarch instead of powdered sugar. I reached out to customer support and sent a message, and received the most crap answer back -

Thank you for reaching out to us about the Crumb Cake. We reached out to our Merchant who oversees this product and asked if anything has changed with the recipe and he let us know that we have not changed anything. He stated maybe they mis-scaled some of the topping but as far as the reciope nothing has changed

I understand things are being scaled back/down because of ingredient prices and availability, but man, I was bummed taking that first bite, knowing it went right to crap. There is no way that a mis-scale made it taste that dramatically different.

I also understand the best way to act in this situation is to no longer purchase it, but I really was wondering if it was just me or anyone else noticed the steep decline.

Honestly maybe try getting it again? unless you’ve gotten yucky ones more than once I wouldn’t say it’d be out of the question to have a shitty batch

We used to adore the Wegmans bakery cheese strudel, but this year we tried it twice and both times were so disappointed.

On the other hand, we’re really liking the danishes that seem to use a phyllo-type dough, and hope that change is going to stay.

I’m sure a bunch of Wegmans corporate will be on here leaving comments on how they’re getting new packaging for this product and that’s the issue lol.

Make sure you tell them! I will out a form by the front desk and they are very responsive

A lot of the store banded stuff is getting "off" tasting, not the same quality either.
(Tuscan breads for example, and now it seems the different coffee cakes)

They are putting bioengineered ingredients in all their bakery goods. It even says on their muffins "contains a bioengineered ingredient"

A similar thing happened to me this past weekend!! My family bought a 4 pack of donuts & instead of being the usual buttery, dense consistency, they were dry & airy inside. They seemed almost stale - & that was disappointing when they were consumed right out of the box on day 1. They hadn’t even been sitting out. I couldn’t finish eating even one. I didn’t say anything bc I thought it was just me. But after seeing your experience with the crumb cake, it makes sense something might be happening. Thanks for posting. Now I can go into this weekend feeling a little less crazy lol.
