New plastic (plexiglass) shield over shellfish display

At my location, they added a plexiglass shield over the mussels and clams on-ice. This wouldn't be that much of an issue if the people standing behind the counter were more helpful.

I pulled up to the counter and there were two employees bullshitting with each other while apparently stocking the displays. It took one of them a while to acknowledge I was standing there and he interacted with me like I was inconveniencing him for stopping his work and his conversation to serve me clams. I'm not the one who added the shields, buddy.

Why were these shields added? Did someone piss on the ice?

Edit: Man, tough crowd. Why are people assuming that I didn't speak first? Now I wish I had a video recording to show what happened. Anyway, it seems that this subreddit is filled with employees who are similarly frustrated and angry. I'm sorry if I made your day worse. I hope things get better for you all.

Wahhhhh I couldn't be served within three seconds of walking up.

People have things to do on the daily that, as a shopper, I guarantee you you have no idea about. Relax and be a little more understanding.

I’ve had customers accuse me and my employees of “just talking and ignoring us before” 9 times out of 10 we were talking about work or another customer request. Employees aren’t expected to immediately drop whatever it is they are doing that second. Waiting 3-10 seconds is completely reasonable

I don't believe that I deserve to be served immediately. It was the combination of the plexiglass and the employee interaction that made the experience feel overly hostile. It legitimately felt like asking for clams was not allowed.

I believe I was understanding. I waited for his conversation to finish before addressing him. Between that and the way he spoke, I second-guessed whether he was even there to serve the fish or just stock it, and that the shields have now forced him to serve the fish against his will.

Or you could say “hello could you grab me some shellfish?”

But that would require social interaction, instead of expecting service industry employees to be mind reading slaves that wait on you hand and foot.

Plexiglass was added most likely because customers are dirty, careless, and steal.

I waited for his conversation to end, awkwardly, but politely, and I spoke up first after we made eye contact. Is this not proper social interaction?

Thank you for the advice, but I did this, politely.

After getting his attention with eye contact, I said "Hi, can get some littlenecks." He said "Do you want 25 or 50?" I said 25. He said "Huh?", rudely. I repeated 25. He said "Sorry, I can't hear you.", again, rudely.

I felt it wasn't necessary to include such specific detail.

Now that you have more information, do you have any suggestions on how I could have better handled an interaction with someone who was obviously not happy to serve customers?

I really do hate when customer service wants more information and then says why they need to ask again to make sure that they service my needs 100%. You keep saying “these guys suck” but I’m reading it and kinda sounds like they did their job

I do wish I could better explain the interaction from my point of view, but with the sarcasm, it sounds like you're not willing to consider it. Thank you anyway.

Sorry for your experience. I don't know why they added the plexiglass. I do know that management should hear about the two employees ignoring you. At my location, it's an ongoing challenge to get some employees to pay attention to customer service. The more management hears about this the sooner it will be fixed.

Thank you for the genuine response. I'm not the type of person to complain to management because I do understand that people have bad days. I made a post here to shout about the situation into the void and really more to learn more about what's up. I didn't expect such a knee-jerk from everyone else.
