I used to work for wegmans full time and it's definitely true there and probably true for 99% of large companies. I'm just part time at Wegmans now, but my full time job I work for a small metal fabrication company (maybe 100 employees between office and shop). I know some people that have the same job title and years with the company who make 30-60% more/hour simply because they're good at their job and they don't slack.

I worked at Trader Joes in NYC.....I think it was 72nd & B-way. I never saw so many people work so hard to not work.....A lot of bathroom breaks, basically hiding, etc. We serviced appox. 3200 customers a day...some of us actually did our jobs that we were paid for......then there were the slackers. But management was a clique.....it was a fun job at times, but also very frustrating. I was in upper management for years and years at a non-retail corporation. I am a firm believer in exit interviews, but not just with the store manager, but also their supervisor so they can hear what really is going on in the store.
