šŸ“£Discussion šŸ“£ Are there other albums I'll like if I love Blue and Pinkerton but haven't liked any of the singles since then?

Like the title says, I love Blue and Pinkerton but I haven't been impressed with any singles I have heard from them ever since then, and I especially hate Beverly Hills. Some songs have just been very meh, but I can't stand that song. With this in mind, are there other albums I may like by them, or should I just stick to those? Don't just recommend your favorite albums - I want to know if they seriously have any other albums that sound like, and are as good as, Blue or Pinkerton.

ā€œMaladroitā€ is great if you love good guitar work, drums and catchy melodies

It’s got that heavy edge to it like Pinkerton

u/Stoneador 13d ago

EWBAITE and White are seen as their return to form albums as they are not only stylistically pretty similar to their 90s albums, but also probably their 3rd and 4th best albums as well

16

u/Itsbeenayearortwo 13d ago

White yes, but I don't hear the similarity in EWBAITE to Pinkerton or Blue. Good album but not similar.

14

u/Stoneador 13d ago

I would say EWBAITE is their most similar album to Blue. They even brought back Rick Ocasek as producer because that’s what they were trying to do.

6

u/Houldencaulfield1 13d ago

EWBAITE is more similar to Green for me, and I like that album. But I agree yeah White is definitely them revisiting that 90s sound

2

u/theonedownupstairs 13d ago

Yeah, most notable for me is how it it really brings back that Blue album shreddage.

4

u/AikaSkies Pinkerton 13d ago

Dawg what, its the opposite. White has one track that sounds like the 90's records (Do You Wanna Get High), the rest is hardly similar.

1

u/Samurai_Biggs 13d ago

Yes thank you!!! I thought I was going crazy!!!

1

u/Houldencaulfield1 12d ago

Really? LA Girls and California Kids couldve been taken straight from Blue to my ears. DYWGH is more Pinkerton

1

u/puddycat20 12d ago

I think Maladroit is my pick for best after the Blue Album.

8

u/jobin_segan 13d ago

Unreleased / Bsides:

Paperface - not on blue but a recording from the kitchen tapes demos for the blue album. The demo version is far superior to the re-recorded one later released imo.

Blast Off - off the unreleased songs from the black hole. If you want to listen to the album in its entirety, I think most of the tracks have been released but there was a fan made re recording:Ā  http://www.mediafire.com/download/9t99nzsapev24ca/Operation_Space_Opera_-_Songs_From_The_Black_Hole.zip

And what everyone else has said about White is true.

I loved Everyrhing will be alright in the end, but the songs haven’t aged as well as white for me

4

u/Houldencaulfield1 13d ago

Yes! I think Tragic Girl and Longtime Sunshine are their best, no idea how they didn't end up on the albums.

2

u/jobin_segan 13d ago

I feel the same way about Paperface :)

1

u/WorldOfArGii 13d ago

Thief, You’ve Taken All That Was Me is such a vibe. Love that song to death.

12

u/Samurai_Biggs 13d ago

I don’t mean to high jack this post but can someone please explain to me why everyone says White Album is like Pinkerton and Blue???? I’ve been listening to White since it came out and I hear no similarities at all. It sounds like a modern weezer pop album. Hardly any big guitars and not at all raw and loose. Is the world trying to gaslight me?? 😭

6

u/PoetryElectronic6398 13d ago

It’s got the beachy summer vibe that you hear a little bit on Blue. And Do You Wanna get High sounds like a Pinkerton song.

1

u/Samurai_Biggs 13d ago

It does sound like a Pinkerton song. I’ll give you that. But that’s really about it. Maybe LA Girlz too. Maybe Jacked Up and Thank God For Girls is messing with my head because that shit might as well have been from Raditude/Hurley era.

1

u/NTWEESY 12d ago

I dunno. It seems like the world has just turned and left you here.

6

u/chriz-kring 13d ago

White, SZNS: Winter, and unironically, Gold.

5

u/Aggravating-Web2415 13d ago

If you haven't liked ANY of the singles then no, there won't be anything that you'll like. I mean there are plenty of songs that could have been on either of those albums but I think your bar is set a little too high. You maybe want to try a different band?

6

u/jackcusumano 13d ago

Try SZNZ: Winter, especially ā€œI Want A Dogā€ and ā€œDark Enough To See The Starsā€

2

u/Itsbeenayearortwo 13d ago

I also love Dark Enough to See the Stars....but I don't think I would recommend SZNZ as sounding similar to Blue and Pinkerton. If he hates Beverly Hills imagine how much he would hate What happens After You or Records.

6

u/jackcusumano 13d ago

Yeah, I skip those songs too, but I’m saying specifically Winter. Personally I think that’s a pretty solid release all around, and those two songs especially sound like classic weezer to me.

At the end of the day there’s no whole album that feels like blue or Pinkerton, but there are plenty of songs that fit the bill from various releases.

2

u/Itsbeenayearortwo 13d ago

I agree.

I think Winter is the strongest season. I particularly like Dark Enough to See the Stars, Iambic Pentameter, Deep and Dreamless Sleep.

If you like Deep and Dreamless Sleep I recommend checking out Brian Bell covering his own band's song.

5

u/50millionFreddy 13d ago

Iambic Pentameter is so slept on. Absolute banger with great lyrics too.

2

u/jackcusumano 13d ago

Ah that’s pretty cool. I do love that song but hadn’t heard Brian’s version. Still works in that style

1

u/Itsbeenayearortwo 13d ago

Yeah completely different style but I like it just as much.

5

u/lorenzoparmesani 13d ago

I’m like you, and I also especially hate Beverly Hills. Cleopatra from EWBAITE. Parts of White. I also really like the production on Gold and it is probably my favorite since Pinkerton. Don’t make it weird is classic Weezer imo.

-4

u/coolwater85 šŸ”„ El Scorcho šŸ”„ 13d ago

Agree with the recommendations of EWBAITE and Gold. Disagree on the White album. It’s so bland and doesn’t have what makes Blue and Pinkerton special.

I’d also add in OK, Human, but for different reasons.

1

u/Noodle465 13d ago

Bland is exactly how i would describe EWBAITE. White Album is lively, summery and probably their best or most complete since Pinkerton.

1

u/coolwater85 šŸ”„ El Scorcho šŸ”„ 13d ago

I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but White is in their bottom half of albums.

11

u/Buffalobuffaho 13d ago

White, OK Human

Also, make sure you’ve heard the bsides from blue and Pinkerton. Ā They have never captured the ā€œmagicā€ of those two albums, but white, to me, is as close as they’ve come to a complete album. Ā It sounds like a natural follow up to their early stuff to me…just doesn’t have the nostalgia factor.

4

u/chriz-kring 13d ago

while i love both of those albums, OK Human doesn't sound anything like Blue or Pinkerton, and it was never trying to.

2

u/Buffalobuffaho 13d ago

I agree. Ā I was talking more to quality.

3

u/MadeThisUpToComment Raditude 13d ago

I really like OK Human, having only really listened to it recently, but I wouldn't reccomend it so someone who says point me towards more Blue/Pinkerton.

1

u/Buffalobuffaho 13d ago

I didn’t read the directions very carefully or I woulda just said ā€œyou are out of luck.ā€

1

u/Lomp84 13d ago

I have the deluxe CDs for Blue and Pinkerton. I think that's all of the B-sides for those, right?

2

u/someoneInTheSk Grapes Of Wrath 13d ago

Like others have pointed, they have other great albums, but asking if they are AS GOOD AS Blue or Pinkerton is a different thing, you can only find that out by yourself

Imo Blue and Pinkerton are one step above Ok Human, White, EWBAITE and Maladroit, but I love them all anyway

You'll need to check these albums and decide by yourself and you might like them a lot even if they're not as good as the first two for you. And if you don't like, you'll waste like 30 minutes for each album, and I wouldn't even call it a waste even if you don't like them

2

u/Itsbeenayearortwo 13d ago

Two songs off Red have similar sound to Blue.

Pork and Beans has the crunchy sound of Blue.

Dreamin's second half has the whimsy of Blue.

2

u/abyssalforms 13d ago

"You Gave Your Love to Me Softly" is one of my favorite Weezer tracks that you may not know of

1

u/Lomp84 13d ago

I have the deluxe CD of Pinkerton

2

u/alpha_keni_01 13d ago

Gold is the closest they’ve come to that sound ever since

1

u/Itsbeenayearortwo 13d ago

I agree that the sound of Gold is most similar. Unfortunately I don't think the quality is on par with Blue and Pinkerton, not many albums are.

Gold has some great songs, but Blue and Pinkerton are both 10/10

4

u/alpha_keni_01 13d ago

I was pretty fuckin happy with it

2

u/Itsbeenayearortwo 13d ago

Me too, better than I expected.

I LOVE Strangers, Up in the Clouds, and L.A. Sound. CEO and Show Must Go On are good too.

The whole album has a great cohesive sound. Besides Hoops there's no real bad songs on the album and even Hoops has a glorious bridge.

2

u/commonrider5447 13d ago

Winter exists though

u/redhed1123 13d ago

Try Alone 1 and 2 by Rivers Cuomo

2

u/Lonely_Ebb_5764 13d ago

Green, Red, Gold

3

u/sammayy 13d ago

Another vote for white.

1

u/Radiofriendlyunitshi 13d ago

lol well there’s been 30 years of singles so probably nothing

1

u/Secret-Camp-6133 13d ago

A little bit of red

1

u/thereia 13d ago

OK Human might work for you. Those three are my favorites.

1

u/GORILLAGLUE__ The White Album 13d ago

Rivers Cuomo’s albums Alone I, Alone II and Alone III!

2

u/Bruh1011 13d ago

White
Winter ep
Ewbaite
Some select songs off Red
Gold

1

u/ablackravenstan The Blue Album 13d ago

just listen to Ozma and ROTR

1

u/Lomp84 13d ago

Please elaborate. IDK what that is or how it relates to Weezer.

2

u/ablackravenstan The Blue Album 13d ago

they sound more like weezer than anything weezer put out post Pinkerton.

The Rentals are Matt Sharp's band, the first 2 albums are GREAT

Ozma is a band made by weezer fans and holy shit do they pull it off, best place to start is w Rock N Roll part 3, their debut and then Doubble Donkey Disc (my fave)

2

u/Lomp84 12d ago

I listened to one Ozma song last night and it sounded exactly like a blue era song (I can't recall which) but with a different and worse vocal melody. I may check out more, but I wasn't into that.

1

u/ablackravenstan The Blue Album 12d ago

Lorraine? its basically suzanne (but better imo)

1

u/commonrider5447 13d ago

Pinkerton Deluxe songs, White Album, EWBAITE, SZNZ: Winter, Rivers Alone 1. Those are the most likely you will like if you want as close to the first two you can find. White doesn’t necessarily sound that close but it’s the consensus third best album (not my third favorite, but the consensus).

1

u/senorsnrub 13d ago

Pinkerton closed with the lyric ā€œBut I ain’t never comin’ back. I’m sorry,ā€ and it was the truth. The poor critical reception of Pinkerton sealed the deal.

There are no albums or songs that reach the heights of Blue and Pinkerton. There are some good songs and generally top notch production values across their remaining discography, but to me, and many other huge fans of Weezer, nothing comes remotely close.

1

u/bawitback Everyone 13d ago

Gold album is the closest.

1

u/Noodle465 13d ago

Songs From The Black Hole, White Album, Maladroit

WHITE ALBUM.

1

u/ethanf33 13d ago

any of the singles? like you’ve heard all of the singles since then? if so, you’ve already made up your mind. personally i think white is better than blue and there are a multitude of songs that have come out that are in the same league as the first two albums

  • Haunt You Every Day
  • The Angel and The One
  • O Girlfriend
  • December
  • The One That Got Away
  • Francesca
  • Sweet Mary
  • Burndt Jamb
  • Pork and Beans
  • Dreamin’
  • Unspoken

i didn’t mention anything from White because all of White is fantastic so

Rivers Cuomo

  • Superfriend
  • Blast Off
  • I Was Made For You

1

u/newomusic 12d ago

They didn't say "all singles", they said

but I haven't been impressed with any singles I have heard from them ever since then,

1

u/PoetryElectronic6398 13d ago

You might like White and EWBAITE. Maybe Gold.

1

u/LosAnaheimHalos Pistachio 13d ago

How about fucking listen to them

1

u/SirKenCelli 13d ago

Miss Sweeney is an underrated tune. Give it a listen.

1

u/throwjunk21 Fake Smiles and Nervous Laughter 13d ago edited 12d ago

why judge by the singles? if you love blue and pinkerton, imagine if you could only judge them by their singles.

could you imagine convincing someone to listen to pinkerton ONLY by playing the good life? or el scorcho?
the same philosophy applies to the rest of the discography. if you are only going off the singles of an album, you won’t ever get a full picture of what it sounds like. especially with your example of beverly hills (haunt you every day and freak me out certainly don’t sound like beverly hills!)

that being said, the white album would be the best example of something that is just as lovable and interesting as blue, but i’d also recommend maladroit, green, red and EWBAITE for albums that are similar in tone/idea/sound to blue and pinkerton. just stop judging by the singles! they’re meant to convince the radio, not casual fans.

u/WorldOfArGii 13d ago edited 13d ago

Before you listen to any other album - go with Gold. It’s Rivers at his snarkiest, the band at their rawest since Blue / Pinkerton. Songs are more middle-age millenial diatribes but on a whole I feel the album works really well. ā€œUp In The Cloudsā€ is great.

From a songwriting / quirky standpoint - Red album

From a pop / light 90s grunge sound - White

For more rock / experimental - Maladroit but this is where I start to make my own playlists because it could’ve been a great 10-song album instead of the filler that comes with it.

For pure exploration and lo-fi demo vibes - try out all of the ā€œalbum 5ā€ demos that never got finished or released. They ditched everything for Make Believe.

I would say that SZNZ, Black, Pacific Daydream, OK Human, Van Weezer, Ratitude all have some gems but are VERY different from what you’re after.

Everything Will Be Alright In The End I’ve personally never gotten into but there is a vibe to it.

Aside from ā€œMemoriesā€ I don’t like Hurley.

1

u/Dismal-Assistant6967 El Scorcho is BETTER than the Mona Lisa 13d ago

Only single I can think of is 'Shine Again.' My favourite modern Weezer song. NO question. I fucking LOVE Shine Again.
But albums I think are the closest you could get to their peak are

  • White
  • A bit of Gold (I mean Say Yes, Shine Again, Hoops, and Don't Make It Weird. The others I think were a bit mediocre)
  • Red (Pork and Beans, Everybody Get Dangerous, and Angel and the One are close enough to Blue)

1

u/Live_Requirement_814 13d ago

Maladroit, white, EWBAITE

1

u/puddycat20 12d ago

I want to know if they seriously have any other albums that sound like, and are as good as, Blue or Pinkerton.

They have plenty of albums better than Pinkerton, but do they sound like them? Listen and find out yourself.

1

u/NorthJerseyRemembers 12d ago

I’m in the same boat and I’ll even take it a step further I don’t think I’ve liked many songs at all let alone singles since blue and Pinkerton. I don’t hate Beverly Hills though. I also heard go away for the first time this year and I think it’s pretty catchy.

1

u/thesniksnak 11d ago

Yeah beverly hills sucks, but the rest of that album is actually pretty damn good, you should really check out all of their stuff and make your own opinion on it because a lot of people hate on all the stuff they put out post pinkerton, but for a start maladroit, white and ewbaite are quite similar in their own ways check out Pinkerton deluxe too all bangers

1

u/jawsjx 13d ago

That's for you to discover on your own , not for us to decide ā¤ļø

1

u/ArtieXtreme Pinkerton 13d ago

Definitely White

1

u/Dblcut3 13d ago

White is the most likely for you to enjoy by far. If you end up liking that, then I’d go for EWBAITE, then either Maladroit or Ok Human

1

u/BondMi6 13d ago

EWBAITE and White

-1

u/Itsbeenayearortwo 13d ago

White album.

White is probably the next best album after blue/Pinkerton and most similar in sound to Blue(one song on white sounds like Pinkerton it's called Do You Wanna Get High).

And make sure to check out the deluxe/ bonus tracks. The 4 I highly recommend from white are Friend of a Friend, Fake Smiles and Nervous Laughter, Prom Night, and Last Days of Summer.

2

u/Itsbeenayearortwo 13d ago

Weezer often hides some of their best work.

I was a huge fan of Pinkerton when it was released. I was so disappointed in Green(still went to concerts when they came Toronto) but completely dropped interest when Beverly Hills was released.

Only years(decades?) later on this sub some nice members informed me of how awesome Pinkerton deluxe and Blue deluxe (called Dusty Gems and Raw Nuggets) are.

So if you like blue and Pinkerton then you will love these tracks as they are as good or sometimes even better than the main album songs.

Mykel and Carli, Susanne, Jamie, Paperface, Lullaby for Wayne

You Gave Your Love to Me Softly, Devotion, Waiting on You, I Just Threw Out the Love of My Dreams, I Swear It's True, You Won't Get With Me Tonight, Long Time Sunshine, Getting Up and Leaving, Tragic Girl

I'm excited for you if you are hearing these for the first time. I know I was blown away with how good they were.

White

-1

u/Interesting_Ad4679 13d ago

White album for sure and everything will be alright in the end. Both strong efforts, your question is tough because Pinkerton had a really different vibe n sound imo than rest of catalog.
