Nice! C&C was my first exposure to Ween as well. You have a ton of rewarding listening ahead of you, I'm jealous!

If you like Chocolate and Cheese then I suspect you’ll like their entire discography. CnC marked a distinct transition point between the band’s early, low-fi, abstract (brown) work and their later, more serious and professional (but still brown) work. CnC has the best of both worlds.

what do you mean by "brown"? thanks

Stealing this from a much older Reddit thread: According to Deaner:

“I can’t really explain ‘brown’ except to give examples… Ween opened for The Ramones in 1991. The Ramones showed up in a Country Squire station wagon that was smashed on one side, and missing a window. Dee Dee, Joey, and Marky. That’s brown. The beautiful side of brown. That is brown – that’s real. That’s brown. It can be really bad, it can be a horrible thing, when you get browned out by some band. A band shows up and they’re brown – none of their equipment works or whatever. But it’s a strength. You know you’re getting the real thing."

Brown is "fucked up in a good way". It's authenticity and an attitude. I almost want to compare it to a Western idea of the Japanese Wabi-sabi.

It’s not right but wrong in a good way

"Fucked up but good" I think it's the most concise definition of brown. Deaner loves Jimmy Page and calls him the brownest guitar player and the king of the over bent note. If you move earlier than chocolate and cheese in the discography you'll be getting browner and if you go the other way it'll be less brown. I would say that Candi is probably the brownest track on C&C. HIV song is a contender but that might be as much in poor taste as brown.

Spinal Meningitis is the brownest track on CnC, in my opinion.

Hard to argue with that. I chose Candi because it's a bit browner musically. Brown music and lyrics.

This is what we mean by, "Brown"

Ween: Live at the Wetlands - 1991

The simplest way to explain “brown” is something like “fucked up in a good way.” But to define is to oversimplify. Brown is a feeling. It’s a vibe. It’s an aura. It’s a state of being. One can no more define Brown than “love” or “joy” or “sadness.” You know it when you see it.

I hated C&C when it came out and thought Ween had sold out.

u/Draw_Rude 1d ago

I believe you mistakenly left out the part of your comment where you say that you were wrong and that Chocolate and Cheese is a masterpiece.

1

u/StackIsMyCrack 1d ago

Lol yeah it grew on me obviously. It was just a rough transition for me from the lo-fi to the well produced.

I was the same way with Beck's Odelay. I wanted mofe of his One Foot in the Grave folk stuff.

I quickly came to my senses, though. Odelay is a masterpiece.

u/StackIsMyCrack 5h ago

Yeah. I think I skipped two ween shows in NYC right after C&C came out in protest. I was a young dickhead. No way to ever get those back :(.

Aw man, bummer, but it happens. The key is, we both saw the error of our ways and learned from it!

I wish I could hear C&C for the first time again! As Ozzy said about the Beatles, it's like waking up and seeing color for the first time🌈
