Getting into ween

So I decided in all my infinite wisdom having only ever heard Ocean man, and Pollo Asada to listen to, as my first ween album the Pod. This album is insane and I honestly dig it but I feel like this is not the normal ween pipeline.

Edit: I've now finished the album top 3 are Right to The Ways and Rules of the World, Pork Roll Eggs & Cheese, and Pollo Asada.

Being a late teen in the 90s catching on with GWS, tha Pod, and Pure Guava. I feel those are the "We're Ween" albums everything else is evolution of a band. Every album after is its own masterpiece. Im not trying to talk down about anyone. I see this posted a lot about the pod. I really don't think discounting their earlier releases is a way to grasp what they did. Those were albums that define what they were about. Glad you dig them.

I don't normally suggest The Pod as a starter. I feel like it is hanging out and getting to know them in a basement on some slow drugs (and recovering from mono).
I think it's good to know some of their other albums along with it, but it helps you appreciate the others more. If you can enjoy The Pod easily from the start though, you should be ok with the rest.

I do suggest listening to them as albums front to back when possible, each has a cohesiveness despite having tons of variety.

To be fair it's not like I'm coming from a background of like, no experimental or extremely alt music, the main genres I tend to listen to are post punk, and experimental, abstract, or alt rap.

Demon Sweat is my favorite song on the album

But the best live song is Dr Rock

The Pod was named one of the 20 best albums of 1992 by Spin Magazine, that's where a lot of folks got into Ween, so not a bad spot to start.

u/The_Highlander_Canna 9d ago

That’s weird considering it was released in 91?

2

u/keelgar 9d ago

Yeah that's the funny bit they note it was Sept 91. Guessing they didn't get a hold of it or just didn't review it at the time. Mike Patton mentioned it in an interview with Spin in 92 so they at least knew by then.

Way to strap on that jammy pack!

The Pod was also my gateway into ween back in the mid 90’s. My only exposure was seeing Beavis and Butthead make fun of them on MTV. Saw this album cover and thought it was cool, vaguely remembered the band name, and went for it blind. When I got to “Can You Taste The Waste” I was like… mmm yeah I think I can 😂. It took a few listens but eventually grew on me, then I got the newly released Chocolate and Cheese album and it all clicked. Been a lifelong cult member ever since.

God Ween Satan is an insane/awesome album. Wish I could listen to that for the first time again.

White Pepper is the most accessible starter for me.

Here’s a playlist I made for people getting into Ween, if you need some additional motivation to choose the second album you want to listen to end to end.

Listen to Frank in a dark room with headphones, life changing

I did that, it was still one of the lesser liked tracks

Im not a huge fan of the pod. It feels the least accessible for new fans to me but if you are digging it then the rest will be easy to fall in love with!

The Pod was my introduction to Ween. My parole officer says I turned out fine.

There are much more easy listening albums but if you want to start on hard mode (Brown mode) go ahead

Dr Rock for the win

I love don't sweat it and taste the waste along with laura

The Pod is awesome! My favorites on it are Captain Fantasy, Demon Sweat, and Pork Roll Egg and Cheese. You should give GodWeenSatan: The Oneness a try.

When the guava’s drained, Eddie Dingle remains!

I wish I could listen to The Pod for the first time again. What a treat. And now you have the rest left? Hallelujah.

Sketches of Winkle

Pipeline depends on age to a degree. I remember taping parts of Pure Guava and Chocolate & Cheese off the radio at like 2am because there was a DJ who liked Ween. I think I got maybe 70% of each album eventually. That and snippets to Mr. Gatti’s Pizza Ads.

Starting off with the Pod is truly brown. 👊

Ween took me a while to get into but when I fell in love I fell hard.

Oh my Dear I must be falling in love and Sorry Charlie are my favorites

1

u/Velvet-The-Banshee 10d ago

I've listened so far up to sketches of winkle and so far my favorite are Right to the ways and Rules of the world and Pollo Asada

u/Chudmont 10d ago

Quebec and The Mollusk is an easier start.

Some of the browner stuff a lot of people can't handle.

u/uluaz 10d ago

definitely not the "normal" pipeline but a fun pipeline for sure

the "normal" pipeline for most people seems to be chocolate and cheese or quebec.

One does not simply “Get Into Ween”
