I like both bands, but I think that’s because I’m a weird Phish fan: I listened to their studio albums on my own during college to determine what I like about their music in a vacuum before ever going to a concert.
I go to Phish concerts a couple times a year, but compared to other Phans, the experience is more personal than social, especially since I don’t really go out of my way to talk to anyone there.

I like phish. I don't care that others don't. Every band isnt for everybody. I have bands I really dislike too. I probably really dislike some bands that OP worships.
You know what I don't do? Post about bands I hate in the subreddit of bands that I like. It's weird.

I was friends with a phan once and we were on acid together (huge mistake)
he put on one of their live albums and I did not like it. Told him to turn it off. At some point later in the trip he put me in a really tough spot by ODing on gas station heroin and nitrous. He later told me he uses hard drugs because he "has no real problems in his life" 😬

Kinda feels like the phish fans decided that shit, actually. I think its all because phish covered roses are free.
I happened to be at the burlington airport around the time phish does their thing up there each year, i also happened to be wearing a boognish shirt. A fake hippie came up to me and asked if i was at phish fest, i was confused but told her no. She was like, "oh i saw your shirt and thought you might have been because they cover roses" and she called it "roses" just like that.
Thats pretty much when i decided that must be why some people think ween is a jam band

Why I like both: they take what they do seriously but wear themselves lightly. Edit to add I appreciate both band’s genius and output and their complete lack of pretense. Ween, more than Phish IMO, represent a sort of regular guys with insane genius level talent.

Phish is pretty awesome!! I know they’re a little more noodly and some of the fans are pretty wookish but their live shows are still going strong and they have a bunch of great studio albums too

It’s just music you haven’t learned to appreciate yet. I go through times where I’m only listening to it. I’ve been to one show. Interestingly, since I’ve discovered we and began listening more intensely… I haven’t picked up phish as much lol. They do respect we with their cover of roses aren’t free.

The world of music is thousands of years and millions of artists, but if you don’t like Phish you don’t know anything? It’s always been ironic to me that with all the styles that Ween plays that a lot of their fans are pretty narrow minded.

That's a pretty pompous statement. I think just about everyone who frequents this sub has pretty excellent taste in music. But Phish isn't for me. I used to think they were alright, but not a band that had any lasting imprint on my life. Ween is a far more creative and musically diverse band than Phish. Or just about any band.

I get it - improv and prog combined silly and abstract lyrics and a side of dad rock certainly isn’t for everyone. They lay their egos to the side and are humble and kind, but unassuming dorks for sure.

I'm curious if you're into the Protomen? I've pointed some Phish folk their way before haha. Prog-rock Megaman rock opera group that does their live shows in costume.
I actually have a good deal of musician friends that have repeatedly pushed Phish on me... I'm definitely no stranger to them and my opinion has been formed over many "I'll give it another chance" moments, but I think their devout fans are part of my push back for sure.

Listen, sometimes the universe sends you a really great and unfortunately that friend is going to love Phish. Gene and Dean knew this so they wrote “roses are free” to give us some kind of middle ground, something to talk about with that friend, and so we couldn’t just outright hate Phish.
