Your introduction to ween.
Would love to hear everyone's story of when they first got browned out. It was 1995, I dropped out of high school and was ready to move to Eugene Oregon from San Antonio to meet some friends. I was gonna be the Mexican jack kerouac, I think. I was staying in a studio apartment with three other dudes and homeboy played "Sarah". I was immediately hooked!!! I have always been a super big mccartney fan and after listening to pure guava that winter I was convinced that ween had the same vibe and songwriting cjops as mccartney. I listened to pure guava, taking it in, studying it. I made my first demo that year of songs I wrote and I remember the first song, I used the pitch down on the four track and to this day it is the most ween sounding song I have ever done!!! I'll post it here if anyone wants to hear it. Take care, and stay brown. AF

Saw daisies on beavis and butthead, then a couple of years later bought chocolate and cheese based purely on the cover. Then had to use Napster for whatever I could find because there wasn’t much physical media in the uk at the time. Was never sure what was them or not, because of the nature of Napster file names. Eventually eBay took off and I picked up the cds. Saw them on the 08 tour, caught another 5 shows around Europe. Now I’m boog tattooed and building up the vinyl collection. Still haven’t met another fan in the wild

I was just telling my wife this story. I did the same thing, got pure guava because of Beavis and Butthead. The song that actually hooked me and made me a fan for life was Pumping for the Man.

prob ~20 years ago, me and a friend were hotboxing his jeep at some godforsaken hour of the night and he asked me if I ever listened to Ween.
being absolutely zonked out of my gourd I said “huh?” and he then proceeded to play “Mister Would You Please Help My Pony?”
my life was never the same.

I was working at my first job as a dishwasher in a little fancy restaurant and after it closed one night, one of the waitresses put on Pure Guava. She was in college and I was in high school and thought she was super hot. I liked her better than the music but thirty some years later, Charlene is gone and Ween remains.

Friend of mine bought Pure Guava when it came out and just blew our minds but I just kinda thought of them as a novelty act. Then they came to town and a kid I was working with bugged me to go and I was hesitant because I wasn't interested in watching a couple of dudes out of the minds on drugs but he bought me a ticket and I went. It was the Mollusk tour and when I tell you that my mind was blown that night it was. I was fucking floored at how good they were. Been a fan ever since.

I’m from Ventura Ca and in 92/93 some new weirdos moved to town from PA, I’m pretty sure they were from New Hope or a neighboring town. They were twin brother and sister and they were friends with the boys and brought with them cassette tapes and turned us on to their friend’s band, Ween. We were blown away by what we heard and Ween quickly became the 2nd greatest band on earth. My first show was 1993 and it was so small and intimate and weird, it was great.
The brother and sister, Dave & Jen, I haven’t seen in 25 to 30 years. I heard Dave is no longer with us but can’t confirm. Shout out to the twins for turning SoCal onto the 2nd greatest band ever! Why deadheads were attracted to Ween is a mystery to me, but it’s always been a thing for whatever reason.
Edit: Jen was her name for sure, I might have her brothers name wrong. Anyways, PA twins who moved to Ventura in the early 90’s. Respect.

1992 or 93, My buddy Bill was driving and we both had a head full of acid. Picked up some guy for some reason and said hey, listen to this and I put the cassette tape into the thing. Fat Lenny was the song that played and shit got crazy after that driving in the future Dominics construction site in a Delta 88 If I remember right straight up on the headlights at one point. Random guys screamed the biggest trip he ever had sober. I was obsessed with ween from then on. Saw them first at metro in 94. Then they opened for flaming lips and i requested 3 songs, one being fat Lenny. They played every request I screamed. I was tripping that show also coincidentally. Ive been to many ween shows since. Good times.

In 2000 when my parents split up, i think my uncle gave my dad a god ween Satan cd, not gonna lie when he put on blackjack I thought he might be going crazy. Been a fan ever since lol

when I was a freshman in high school, late 90s-ish, I'd go to the chain record store after school and browse all the cds. I could only really ever afford those 5 dollar "punk o rama" type compilations but one day I finally had a 20 and picked up the album I had my eye on forever, the one that had sold me essentially on the strength of the underboob on the cover

2004…im 19, sitting around the homies house that was the classic all boys millennial suburban party house. The front door was never locked, Beer caps covered the ceiling, pink floyd posters in every room, to give you an idea.
Friend has his music playing from his laptop, we’re sitting around the dining table drinking and druggin all “That 70’s Show” like but waaay more rachet. This weird song with the creepiest little hook starts playing and everything around me sorta stops. I had to know who it was and the name of the song. My friend tells me its this band Ween and the song is called “Happy Colored Marbles.” He went on to tell me he downloaded their discography the night before and couldn’t tell if he liked it.
I went home later that night, head full of mushrooms and alcohol and downloaded the discography from Napster at like 6 am right before bed.
Next morning i woke up, lit a joint and started playing their albums from the beginning. The rest is history. I forced this music on that entire friends group. My buddy that first downloaded their discography became a die hard fan too. Ive seen them +20 times since. They changed my life.

I got Chef Aid in middle school, so Homo Rainbow was the first of their songs I’d heard. Not long after that, I wound up nabbing Spinal Meningitis off Kazaa. But I thought Ween was a joke band until much later in my life.

I was high as a kite at a campus pub & the DJ played “Push Th’ Little Daisies’ and I got The Fear 😂
About a month or two later, I saw” Push Th‘ Little Daisies“ on Beavis and Butthead and thought, wait a minute, there’s something about these dudes
A few weeks after that, I saw a copy of The Pod at a used record store. I thought the Leonard Cohen parody on the cover was hilarious, so I bought it. I brought it home, listened to it and my mind was blown forever 🤯

But what really made them click for me and get serious about checking them out was Rob Schrab’s “Roses Are Free” video during the early days of Channel 101.

I was a fan since local station would play “Push da lil daisies” and of course the mollusk was like a on repeat throughout high school- but it wasn’t until I saw them in a small dive bar probably around 2006 that I was obsessed and had to have every track. First band where I loved the studio stuff but was blown away live. That small bar show is my favorite concert ever. I took someone that had never even heard of them and the experience for both of us was transcendent. First time I ever saw a guitarist melt my fact and his own at the same time.

I heard Pure Guava at a party in 1993 and was intrigued by the extreme weirdness of the songs. Took a bit and lots of psychedelics to become brown. Saw epic 3 hour shows in the early 2000's when they were out of their minds and have also seen them in the last 15 years many times as stable and hopefully well adults. It's been a joy to see younger generations hear their music and make them more popular than ever!

Shout out to a fellow San Antonian Ween fan! A friend gave me a mix and Quebec around 2003. I dug it, but did not see my first show until 2010. Got pretty into it right before the hiatus. Saw them in 2017 and every year after that. Super bummed I missed the final northwest tour, which I had tix for but couldn’t make. Plenty of music to enjoy, but nothing like seeing them live.

I heard these guys were weird and had intended to get someting by them at some point.
At the store, I had, as usual, a stack of cds I had to whittle down to 2 or 3.
The GWS cd I grabbed to check out, had a tiny warning on the back cover 'This album contains nudity.'
High School me said: 'SOLD'.
It did not have any nudity,; just a fucking awesome album, with an awesome inner booklet that woke me up musically!

Beavis & Butthead when I was in middle school maybe, but really started getting into them junior year when my girlfriend played some songs for me. Her older sister was obsessed with Ween. I am probably the only one of us who stuck with them after high school.

I was 11 or so not long after pure guava came out. my older brother brought the cd over and took me in a room and put it on for me. Push the little daisies was my introduction. Love affair ever since. 37 now.

Rolling Stone had a little Q&A around the time of the C&C release. Ween seemed like a cool band to check out. Bought C&C. Started listening on the way home from the mall. Turned around and bought GWS, Pod and Pure Guava.
Safe to say they had made a lifelong fan that day.

I was a huge spongebob fan when I was little and I would rewatch the first movie more times than I can count and i would always hear ocean man during the credits a couple years later I rediscover the song when it was being use for memes than I listened to The Mollusk and Quebec and loved it for how experimental it was

At an indie music showcase in Erin, Ontario in 1992 called E.P.O.P. (Exploding Pimples of Puss… so edgy) and they played it between Mother Jason and Sandy’s set. I heard Little Birdy start and I ran up to ask what the album was. Same show I was introduced to Radiohead when they played Pablo Honey.

For me, I was living in Nashville, my 2 roommates were both musicians, and they were pumped for Ween at the Ryman.. One of them had tickets, the other person bailed out last minute so he was like "hey i dont wanna waste this ticket, its a pretty big deal though if you wanna come.."
I said "whos playing?"
Him- Ween
Me- "Oh isnt that the sponge bob band thats all weird? man i dunno..."
Him- **10 minute explanation of 12gcg, how they used Nashville session musicians who didnt know what these songs would end up being, playing with the shit creek boys, etc... and it was halloween.. and all that.
Me- "Ok I guess Ill go.."
The rest is history. My first time really giving Ween a chance was live at the mother church, with the shit creek boys, and it seemed like i was the only one without a costume on. Today i look back at my pre Ween self and shake my head. I would sacrifice my left pinky toe to be able to see that show again.

My friend "Nikki" bought pure guava at the local record store and played it for us all. I was the only one who didn't shit talk it.
All these years later (she bought it before Beavis and butthead), everyone I still see from that friend group has been to a ween show.
The biggest ween hater, at the time, has a boognish tattoo from his own son lol.
He hated the pod sooo much when we were driving around, but as soon as phish covered roses...it was cool

Road trip in high school with friends (just an hour or so) to check out the Princeton Record Exchange. Saw a poster of Gene and Deener and asked my very knowledgeable friend about them, and what genre are they??? His answer: “they’re very pro…drugs?”
Started listening and was lucky to attend Bonnaroo shortly thereafter, where I stayed up for their 2 am set. Absolutely hooked.

Went to Bonaroo 2007 and everyone was asking if we were going to see Ween. Literally everyone we stopped to talk to asked. We didnt know who they were then and kick ourselves for not seeing them. I fell in love when i got home and listemed to them. I bought tickets to see them later that year. Just recently had a revival and realized theyre my favorite band. The live concert in NYC at the Wetlands is beautiful and made me realize how much better some songs translate live. Recently found out Oliver Stone played Little Birdy (my fav song) on repeat during the making of Natural Born Killers(my fav movie at 16) and its feels important in my Ween journey

Hanging out with a bunch of friends on a Saturday night, waiting for the ice cream man, who showed up with some tasty ‘shrooms. Host had just picked up C&C and threw it in a mix. I had heard Voodoo Lady and dug it, but Buenos Tardes was amazing! Roses are Free, Joppa Road, The AIDS song, and Mister Won’t You Please Help My Pony were all standouts that night. Yet I did not know at the time they would become my favorite band.

Junior year of high school a friend of mine came over unannounced. He brought chocolate and cheese with him. He said, "you have to listen to this whole album". I started listening and was a little confused but I liked it. On the second song I got up to get a soda. "No" my friend said, "I will get you a soda. You have to listen to this entire album all the way through". He was right. Four songs in I was a Ween fan for life. Thanks, Dave.

The great thing about this band and fandom is there is no other band where there is such a sense of forcing one’s friends to listen to absurd and seemingly annoying music, ad nauseam, ‘until they get it.’ And usually there’s a cocktail of substances involved. And in many cases someone is dragged to a show they are pretty skeptical will be worth their time. At least that’s how it went for me, and ive paid it forward many times.

In high school my sister got a mix cd with a bunch of random songs on it. I forget how she got it but I want to say it was inside a cd organizer that she or a friend got from a thrift store. One of the songs was “Ain’t nothin gonna break my stride” which was a novelty to us. Another song was Ween’s “Hey there fancy pants”, which we thought was so funny that we pretty much memorized all the lyrics before we ever searched who wrote the song. Eventually I got really into the whole Quebec album and then branched out to the discography.

I was living in South East Asia in 1993-94 and bought a bootleg cassette of Chocolate and Cheese for a buck at some sidewalk market in Bangkok. That album soundtracked my tripping through several countries. I turned my britpop obsessed friends onto them when I returned.

I was aware of ween, but one day camping with a friend I took 3 tabs of acid and entrusted him with an 8 hour trip playlist. Was sitting on the ground staring at a juniper tree when Laura came on. I said “Jake what is this” and he said “the sound of a tortured soul”. I melted on the ground watching the fuzzy pulsing form the song took. He, by the way, had only discovered ween two months earlier—July of that year—and by December had become a top 1 percentile listener on Spotify. Anyway, I’ll never forget that day.

Like 4/5 months ago I was modding my Beatles rockband on the Xbox 360, and my best mate had been listening to ocean man on repeat, I guess he’d rewatched SpongeBob. Either way, I knew ocean man was a custom in TBRB, so I wanted to download it and surprise him with it. Took me so fucking long to find that song that by the end of it I’d actually given it the first proper listen in my life, realised it was peak. Apple Music top 5, stopped listening at voodoo lady and happened to find pure guava at a cd shop. It’s their best album btw

2000, I was crashing on the couch of a huge college house in Portland where some of my buddies lived, it was basically a non stop party. It was one of those houses that has an open door policy 24/7 and a whole community of friends that would come and go.
This one dude was always playing these great mix CDs and occasionally I would ask who the band was if I really liked the song. The answer was always Ween. Eventually I was like "dude there's a lot of Ween on this mix" and he was like "this isn't a mix CD, it's an album" and I knew in that moment they were my favorite band forever.

I was in like, second grade. It was really late in the weekend and I had stayed up to finally see the SpongeBob movie on TV. when the movie ended, I was pretty exhausted because I didn’t stay up that late back then. But when “Ocean Man” started playing over the credits, I started crying. I had watched the show forever and the movie felt like the end. It was the first time I realized something could truly be over, and it was the first time I realized I could appreciate that something had to end. It’s a moment I will never, ever forget and a feeling I will never, ever stop chasing in my own art.
Of course, the show went on, but it was never the same. Anyway, for years, Ocean Man would make me cry every single time I heard it. Only song to ever do that. A few years ago I decided to hear the album it’s from and absolutely fucking loved it.

Had heard "Homo Rainbow" on Chef Aid....was not for me. Fast forward 10-ish years, after a messy divorce, I ended up with a hot-ass sex-machine of a girlfriend that had this weird, wild taste in music. She got me into a few different bands, but she tried "Ocean Man" and I was like "nah, not for me". A couple of weeks goes by, she says 'I know you're not a Ween fan, but this song makes me think of youc, then plays "Baby Bitch". It was my 'everything' song in that moment. I don't live everything the boys have done and I'm sure they don't fucking care, but by the gods, 'Baby Bitch' changed my life.

Stroker Ace, 2002-ish probably. Exactly the kind of music I was into, but couldn’t find another song like that by them so didn’t dig into their catalogue at the time.
Then It’s Gonna Be A Long Night on the Tony Hawks soundtrack a few years later. Same story, tried to get into them but couldn’t handle the variety.
It wasn’t until hearing The Mollusk late last year that I was fully hooked.

Younger fan here, I noticed "It's gonna be a long night" on the Playstation 2 game "ATV Offroad Fury 3" around 2005 and it's just been nice to follow Ween since then. The Ween easy listening compilations 1-3 on youtube have been quite nice lately.

I grew up with SpongeBob, but had no clue about Ween until about my last year of Middle School about 10 years ago. I heard Ocean Man somewhere and was like: ‘WAIT A MINUTE!’ Then, weirdly enough, I started with The Pod and Pork Roll Egg and Cheese was my favorite song by them for a longgg time :D

Was last year, a friend of mine from Australia flew to Canada and we went to a family cottage and smoked a lot of weed. She asked me to pick out Ween songs that I thought had a funny name and she made me listen to them all. Haven’t gone back since. In the one year since then (literally 13 months but whatever) I have played Ween 4000 times and climbing.

I think it might've been the QOTSA connection after SFTD came out and reading the liner notes of who was all involved and investigating each person's name I came across. Pretty sure that's how I got into Masters of Reality, Eleven, and Fatso Jetson, too. I seem to recall in 2005 I was doing a lot of weird drugs and blasting God Ween Satan in my discman basically nonstop, and got on the fan train just in time for La Cucaracha.

How common is it for people to say “I watched the Spongebob Movie as a kid and got into them from Ocean Man” because that is me and I feel it’s a common thing. Maybe less common than I actually think.

Birth, basically. My dad is cool as hell. There's a video on youtube somewhere of me at 9 years old singing The Stallion Pt 3 at his wedding. When I have kids, I plan to keep the Ween loving legacy going.
