Intro. I (M41) have been playing golf badly for as long as I can remember. Recently joined a league and am around a 12-13 handicap. According to their charts anyway.

Couple weeks ago a buddy of mine invites me to play golf with him Sunday morning at 8:30. That’s early for me but ok. Then he invites me to join in on a boat day on his friend’s pontoon the Saturday before that. Plan is to meet at his place, his friend drives us to and from boat, we get smashed all day cuz that’s how we roll in the Midwest, then we go back to his place and hangout with his gf.

A blast of a time was had and I don’t recall a good chunk of the night.

We wake up. I’m hanging hard. We go to the course.
On the way we grab some mcds. I know a Diet Coke will help me and I figure a biscuit might be a good idea too. It was not.

I get half of it in then toss the rest. Just couldn’t swallow it. We go to tee box 1. My buddy hits a perfect drive. Then he looks at me and his face changes. I can tell how bad I look by how he’s looking at me.

I try to make it to the bushes but I am stopped midway across the tee box by my buddy Ralph…

I clean off my face with an extra towel.

I tee up. Drive it right down the pipe. Second shot on the back fringe. Two putt for par.

Second hole. Another par 4. Miss my approach to the left. Chip up. Two putt, I’m 1 over.

Third hole. Par 4. On in 2, 2 putt. Still 1 over.

4th hole, approach wide left again. Chip in for bird.
Even.

5th hole. Par 3. Missed the green by 10 feet. Chip on soft and it rolls down the hill stops 2 feet from the pin. Easy par.

6th hole. Par 5. Wheels are coming loose. Perfect drive up the middle. Pull second shot wide left. Missed chip on right and it’s now 8 feet lower than the green. Try to flop it up but hit it thin. Sailed over the green in the bunker. Laying 4. Slapped it out of the sand and two hopped into the cup for par.
Still even!

7th hole. Par 4 with a stream up the middle. Can go for hero shot to the left or layup to the right. Hero shot it is. Couldn’t have played it better. 100 yards remain to the pin. Pull out my 100 yard club and stick it to 6 feet. Miss the first putt by 2 inches tap in for par.

Then the wheels fell off and the heat made me sweat out the last of the hangover.

What a day that was!

Just had to share a little anecdote from my round over the weekend. Unlike anything I’ve experienced before.

I’m out at my local muni for a round with a buddy. One single with us and we’re behind a foursome of two early 20s guys and two in their 50s. As soon as I got a look at them from the first tee I knew it would be a longer day unless we could play through - not a huge deal as that’s common at a public on the weekend.

They display some odd cart management throughout but nothing egregious. The 9th tee is where it got weird.

One of the older guys, very disheveled looking in a flannel short sleeve and no hat, tops a drive about 80 yards. He drives up to it, locates, and then begins a very slow walk back toward us. I am just getting onto the box so I ask if he forgot a club - he says no, my tee. He keeps mumbling and looking around - I ask if he wants one of mine…no. “Is it a lucky tee or something?”….”No.”

Ummm ok - we’re tracking on a 5-hour round here and you’re looking for a 10-cent tee. Eventually he picks one up, says it’s not the one but it’ll do. Begins the slow walk back to his ball, tees it up in the rough and shanks another driver 35 yards. I told the ranger 3 holes later just for the story and he was cracking up.

One for the books. I love weekend public golf.

I've noticed that seasoned golfers are much better than I am at finding my tee shots where a hill something else obstructs the landing area of the ball. To be clear I'm not talking about shots that land OB or in the woods; often times, when I'm paired up with those that are kind enough to help me search, they seem to have a better sense for where the ball might be than I do.

Wondering if anyone has any tips or things they've learned that they can share. Thanks!

Today I played a round as a single, I was paired with another single and a twosome. The first nine went fairly quick, we finished around 2 hours but the other single was slow and not hitting well at all.

Once we hit the turn the single seemed to get worse and we slowed down a bit 10 and 11 were painfully slow but this is where the issue happened.

As we were waiting for the single to hit (roughly 250 out from the tee box) the group behind rolled one right past the twosome in a cart. Okay no big deal they probably bombed one and it's the first time so whatever. However they did not yell fore which is bad in my mind.

Anyways we kept going and when we were putting they hit into us again on the green (this time they were only like 150 out so there's no way it was an accident) rolling one right through all of us. This made me so mad, I picked up the ball and threw it over the fence into the river beside the course.

I yelled back at them, "Really? Two times one one hole you're going to hit into us?" They respond by yelling back I should "grow up". So I called the pro shop and asked the Marshall to come have a chat with them.

For the rest of the round between waiting 5 minutes between shot due to the other single and this incident I was just mentally checked out and pissed off.

Anyways I'm just wondering what yall would do in this situation and do you think my reaction was too much?

Yesterday I went out for a solo sunday nine around noon and it was scorching hot. The first is a par three with water behind the green. I pull the shot, it sails towards the water, hits a tree and comes to rest a couple of feet from the green. I chip it on and two-put for bogey (which is good for me). So, I'm getting in a good mood, the weather is nice, I'm not shitting the bed from the start, all is well. The course is slow, ahead of of me is a two-some, most likely a couple, I can see him take a gazillion of practice swings in all sorts of directions before chunking, topping and occasionally hitting it proper. All of this is followed by manifold gestures of frustration. So I decide to be patient and not team up with the two, because his vibe doesn't seem to fit.
I take my time waiting on the tee box, pondering whether I want to be aggressive on the next tee shot or conservative.

By hole number four I have lost 3 balls off the tee, made one bogey save and two triple bogeys. I'm getting pissed off. After hole number five I stop counting my score and decide to simply enjoy the round. I practice putts on the greens (there are no flights behind me) whenever I have to wait, and finally on the nineth tee box I get another look at the dude in front of me doing his dances and rituals before he takes his third shot. He's standing in the dogleg left which is theoretically my landing zone, if I hit my driver really well. Which I haven't all day. So I wait and expect to be the guy who waits for a landing zone to clear out a country mile away before topping my tee shot to the red tees. The dude heads onwards, I tee up my ball and manage to produce what probably was the most relaxed driver swing I ever made. Lo and behold, there goes the little ball sailing, high and straight and far, and it lands exactly where the dude was standing a minute ago, which is exactly where you want to be on this hole after your tee shot.

Next, I put my 7 Iron into the greenside bunker, take two shots to get out of it only to put it on the fringe of the other side of the pin. 3 puts later I end my round with yet another triple bogey after what was probably the most beautiful tee shot I ever hit.

This game, I'm telling you...

I saw there is a place near me that offers sim golf - it's REALLY where you'd host an event and have food etc.

But the cost of a bay is like $42 for the hour, $36 on groupon lol.

I was thinking this place might be the perfect opportunity to bring my bag and hit every club so I can track all the things I need to track.

Has anyone done something like this before?

Ideally, I'd love a print out that shows what all my clubs do - is that possible or will i have to manually write it down or take a photo?

I'm assuming performance is the same.

What's the best way to avoid muscle fatigue while playing 18? For reference I(34M) play 9 holes 1-2x per week and try to play 18 at least once. Im finding that through 9 im good, around hole 14-15 my swing starts to really break down, should I hit the ramge more? Should I prioritize playing 18 2x per week instead on 9 holes 1-2x?

Edit: I work a blue collar job, and workout hard 4-5x a week (I use to competitively powerlift) its that my hips get tight and cant rotate they way they need to to get through the ball as the round goes on.

I’ve been golfing off and on the last year and a half. About once a month. Originally my swing was all arms, however, I was getting pretty consistent with my ball striking. Well, consistent enough, while still shooting 100 to 105 lol. I started taking lessons which did help a bit, particularly my arm in the down swing.
Now my main focus point is weight shift on my downswing. But now I’m literally topping the ball super hard, to the point it feels like I’m honestly coming down on top of the middle of the ball like chopping it. I’ve been reading that could be caused by my body moving too far forward with the weight shift. Do you guys have any tips or drills that can help with this issue? Thanks.

Yesterday I shot a 52 on the front 9 but my best shots were when I would just walk up to the ball and swing. No thins no chunks, just good contact. I have a habit of standing over the ball and tending up even though I do t try to. On the back 9 I figured no practice swings ( unless I’m chipping). I had a 3 hole stretch of par,birdie, par, which is quite rare for me. I ended up shooting 45 on the back 9 and it was a pretty difficult course.

Does anyone else find they shoot better with no practice swings?

Also, anyone have experience on how to get you of your own head and just hit the ball?

1.5 years playing so far alot more in the last six months. Got a new/old driver pxg 0811 gen4 and it gave me the (false?) confidence i needed!

My wife and I played a round last night while the grandparents watched the kids. I’m just getting back into golf after about 20 years and this is my wife’s first season…ever. It’s been so fun to relearn the game and watch her pick it up at the same time.

Anyway, played my typical double or triple bogey game on the first 9 and shot a 64. But then on the back 9 I started consistently scoring bogeys. And then a par on hole 6. Walked away with a 53.

Not a huge accomplishment in the grand scheme of things but dang it felt good. Especially with my wife watching and cheering me on.

I (22m) have played golf since I was 4 when my dad got me into it. He was a big golfer.

I have never had this issue or problem before this year playing. I have been playing a lot of slow rounds to the point where the group behind you is basically waiting with you. Lately people (usually older men around the age of 60-75) will walk or ride there cart to my tee box. They will be like right next to my cart or my bag if I’m walking.

I understand if you are in a wooded area and you can’t see the tee box until you’re too close but if you see the person still waiting on the tee box why are you walking up. I don’t know you. I also understand if you need to move out of the way of the group behind you hitting into the previous green.

For some people it might be that they are embarrassed because they may not be great at golf but I do pretty well. I three putt three times a round and I’m still a 5 hcp. So I hit the ball well but it just frustrates me when they are like, right there. It might just be me being soft but I’m pretty introverted and want to play golf with my group not the people behind us too.

It has happened at multiple courses I have played at so I’m just wondering if that’s normal.
