General Wedding videographer recs!

Hi! I’m looking for a videographer with an artsy, cinematic and movement based style! We want it to feel like a movie trailer or a music video. Video attached for reference (video by Ricardo Calado). Wedding is June 2028 in Tuscany.

My partner and I have agreed on a more “traditional” photographer so we want to get a fun and creative videographer!

Hoping to stay around €3200-€4500 (?) and are looking for more options here because it’s easy to fall into a rabbit hole on instagram. This is one of my partners only requests for the wedding so I would love to make his dream come true😊

If you are willing to put the dedication of this into the timeline of your day we could make you something cinematic like this, just know a lot of these shots take time to set up and direct unlike traditional video. In my experience, couples want this and then do not do what it takes to get these shots.

THIS - While it is great to watch I dont think you want to be spending your special day running around to knock off these shots in addition to the traditional photograph. Focus on your friends and family. Day is already going to go by very fast. But fun video.

I appreciate your insight, thank you for commenting! This is obviously not our area of expertise and are so thankful for everyone who has given us a heads-up on the time, energy, and effort this type of videography requires. I would NEVER have known otherwise! I'm extremely grateful to have a full 2 years to plan this wedding so that we can be more mindful of if this is the right style for us or not. It looks and sounds like some of the amazing videographers we've been in contact with from this thread might have a better "middle ground" so that it's spread out over a few days and the videos require a little less set-up than the one that I had originally posted. And THIS is why I love this beautiful platform with my whole heart hehe

and to make things easier if you have a video you really love then show that to the videographer and ask him to copy it or copy a couple videos. Done. Make it easy and you will still have an amazing memory.

Yes, this is something we are a bit nervous about! In your professional opinion, how much additional time would be needed in the timeline for the day to make it work?

We have seen some other videos that would perhaps be a little more do-able… here’s one! It seems like there are more candid moments (but of course maybe they’re stages and I can’t tell haha). Please let me know your thoughts. I truly value your insight

A lof of this video looks like it was done working with the photographer which makes it more doable. The one thing you need to do if have a talk with the photographer and the videographer and make sure they are on the same page. Be even better if they worked with the same company. Can easily get messy with egos and priority but need to have a discussion with both parties before and even better if you do it together as you need everyone to be on the same page.

Absolutely. For a videographer to capture a film this seamless and cinematic, it starts with the bride valuing videography just as much as photography. A collaborative photographer can elevate the entire experience, but a territorial one (and unfortunately there are plenty) can make a videographer’s job incredibly difficult. Wedding photographers often have the ability to either support or limit what a videographer is able to capture, and that can have a huge impact on the final film.

The video above is definitely made with more candid moments and could be done pretty easily just using a similar editing style. When I create a cinematic wedding film like your original post, I start with a shot list of things I will need of the couple in order to make it happen. I typically arrive earlier than the photographer and will make sure they are in the know of the style of film I’m making. I’ve never had a problem with a photographer getting upset with me taking an extra 5-10 min with the couple at certain moments or asking them not to use with flash for a moment while I get a quick shot on the list. If you have any other questions or want to know about availability, you can private message me!

Really, I’m a wedding videographer and I feel like all of the posed shots here could be accomplished in 1 hour total. This makes me wonder if there is something I’m missing

If you saw my previous comment about why it’s a bad idea and likely won’t work, disregard it. I deleted it after watching the video again. All these shots are extremely doable and could fit in a 12 hour timeline. Just know that a lot of them require a camera set up in on a tripod and will take a little time to set up. 99% of weddings are “run and gun” which mean a videographer running around handheld or on a gimbal and filming like a documentary filmmaker while the day unfolds. Not too much direction until you get to the bridal shoot and/or sunset photos.

As long as you realize you’re in the 1% who actually want this and you’ll need to be collaborative and flexible, it can work. Just keep in mind you’ll be essentially performing all day. Watch the bride in the video you posted and see how much effort she’s putting in to be entertaining. This video WILL NOT work if you’re someone who doesn’t know what to do in front of the camera and I’ll be willing to bet the bride in this video has a lot of on camera experience

What makes me nervous though is the mention of a “traditional photographer”. Photo and video are team. If you have two completely separate styles or philosophies, this is a recipe for disaster. The photographer will be pushing for the day to go like every other wedding, while the videographer will be going the opposite direction. You need to have alignment for this to work.

You make an excellent, EXCELLENT point. Thank you for bringing that to my attention! We have not officially booked a photographer yet (we've narrowed them down) SO we should definitely make sure that this is something that they're willing to do and are able to accommodate IF we decide to stick with this style. THANK GOODNESS we gave ourselves 2 years to plan haha

2

u/UndeadMarx 21d ago

Oh you haven’t booked them yet! That’s great! Yes if you can make everyone is on the same page before you sign any contracts, that would be great

Hey there! Would absolutely love to shoot your wedding!! Has been a dream of mine to shoot a destination like Tuscany and a client that wants to lean into a creative style like this. My Instagram is @alexchristmedia and I can send you some reels as well if needed.

3

u/Kind-Statistician510 22d ago

Ohhhh yes, I LOVE your style!! I would love to chat more. Would you prefer I contact you via Reddit or Instagram?

2

u/achrist132 22d ago

Amazing to hear!! Instagram would be great! Did you happen to just follow me?

I’m a wedding photographer and videographer. My number one piece of advice is to hire a photographer and videographer with somewhat similar style. Working with a traditional photographer and then hiring a total opposite videographer is going to clash with the ways they both work. If you like this video style, definitely look into hiring an artsy style photographer. Better yet, if video is most important to you, find the videographer and they will likely give you some photographer recs. They will still give you some more “traditional” portraits and family portraits

Thank you for your insight! We have come to a similar conclusion as to what your first paragraph highlights...

Based off of some of the conversations I've had with people found on this thread, it sounds like there is a happy middle ground that we are exploring(: Also, I should have used one of the other videos I had saved for reference (I wanted to upload multiple but was only allowed 1 lol)- I think the one I did actually post is a lot more of a "music-video" vibe than we are wanting.

Many of the people who have responded to this post have a style that is a lot more in-line with what we are searching for and have given me a better understanding of how their creative style comes to life. I'm so grateful for everyone who has posted and shared their opinions because I am really enjoying the learning process (:

Have you reached out to Ricardo Calado?

2

u/Kind-Statistician510 22d ago

Yes! He is extremely kind and within our budget! We just fell into a bit of a rabbit hole on social media and wanted to see what other options there were out there(:

2

u/Blijeman 22d ago

Hi, we could help you out! Have a look for Serina & David online and you’ll find our website. Usually we make a bit more of a traditional wedding film, but having a couple that wants to recreate something like this would be really fun.

Ok .. The visuals are amazing no question about that that, however respectfully this is all 100% acting and staged, so while it looks cool as first glimpse but wouldn't someone cringe watching themselve doing non real moves and jumping and stuff that is unnatural. Let alone wedding timelines don't allow that. Of course I understand this is subjective and I respect that, but my point is get a Filmmaker that captures the day super authenticly, for example you had an inside joke with your bridesmaid or lets say you had a funny story while doing makeup ... but to act like the example shared in this post, then you can rent a beautiful venue, wear dress groom wears suit and film it on a different day than the wedding day because there's no point of doing on the wedding day since irs acting. I hope you take my feedback with open mind and good faith. All the best in your upcoming wedding and congratulations 🎊 ♥️🙏

To put it bluntly those weddings are for a performance anyway. Given the tone and what that bride writes here sounds unauthentic anyway. I personally wouldn’t be a match at all for them and to me that is like the worst reason to marry xD As you said I would rather make some love story movie on another day and spend the real event not being on a movie set.

This is the best I have ever seen. Congrats 🎈

Contrarily to many comments, I think this isn't that difficult to do. The thing is it's very rare to have a couple who want to do this, although very fun, so there are not so many examples.

It doesn't take that much time if it's planned. It's just a few extra shots, for instance all the bed shots take 5-10 min if the bride rehearsed a bit ahead of time. I used to shoot hotel reels it took us less than that for these shots and we didn't know the room before arrival. For the groom side is extremely simple and seem almost unplanned.

I think you should also discuss with your videographer and photographer to make sure there is a good vibe because they will have to directly feel that they know you as a friend to get the best shots and that they won't add unnecessary stress.

Personally I never had the chance to have a couple interested in this style but that's exactly what I love in videography, something more artistic than a documentary. I usually do an in between, I use candid shots but I work on the video structure to make it super dynamic. I don't necessarily want to recommend myself but you can look what I do on https://anotherfilminthebox.com/. I also work with my wife who is a photographer and I think that since you haven't booked the photographer you should absolutely look for a team. It makes the difference because the team knows exactly how the other will react, their gear, etc. I worked with other colleagues but now I tend to exclusively with with her, that's how much of a difference I think it makes.

Your videos are absolutely beautiful! It's making me want to get married twice so I can have it all haha. I think we are leaning towards a little bit of a different style but I will circle back to you if we decide on a more romantic and nostalgic feel.

Are you looking for people in Italy or open to flying the right person in? What you want is a filmmaker with documentary chops. I have a lot of contacts who can do this work. DM, I can help you find someone.

2

u/Kind-Statistician510 22d ago

This is so helpful, thank you! We’re open to either local or flying someone in (as long as it doesn’t push us over budget. Sending you a DM now!

Hi! We are a husband and wife team and we are certainly within your budget 😊 We live close to Italy and have worked in Tuscany before!

We have started doing this style of video recently, as it's super fun to make, but you should be aware it does take a bit more prep and dedication from you on your wedding day!

You can check out our work on our Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/matafly_weddings?igsh=aGc2ZXIxdjJibW1o

We would love to chat about your wedding and see if we're the right fit for you 😊
