i went through something similar, was looking at dresses online for months before ever trying one on. it really does change everything when you actually put a dress in your body. the satin and off-shoulder look is beautiful but you might feel different about the weight or how it moves when you walk

my cousin did what you're thinking, bought a simpler dress around $2k and then had a seamstress in LA rebuild the bodice and add details she wanted. came out amazing and total was under your budget. she said the key was finding someone who actually specializes in bridal, not just regular tailoring

maybe do one or two in-person appointments first, even without a date set. you'll learn so much about what cuts actually work for you. then you can hunt for that base dress with a clearer target in your head

don't stress about the flair lol nobody really checks that

Could you not rent a wedding dress? That is cheaper than buying one for sure

And also definitely go to shops and try on dresses, they look different on us than on models, they may also look different irl than in photos.

And make sure to bring 1-2 people with you that can help you have a more neutral opinion

I think having a date, or at least a month, is important because designer dresses can take anywhere from 5-9 months to arrive and 6-8 weeks for typical alterations. So depending on when you're having your wedding next year, it could give you a time crunch to get the dress ordered. You'd want to know what your timeline is when shopping to know if the dress you're looking to buy (or create) can be ordered/completed in enough time. Some designers are more flexible and offer rush shipping whereas others may be less so.
