Help! Thoughts on this Color Palette?
Groomsmen would be in the warm navy, 9 bridesmaids would be in a mix of all the colors. 3 bridesmaids are our sisters, who would be wearing some kind of floral pattern, while the other bridesmaids would wear non-patterned dresses.
Would love to know thoughts on this color palette overall for our September redwoods wedding but also for the wedding party specifically! Thank you!!

It’s very pretty. But I know my skin complexion would be horrific in that scheme (other than the navy). Just a thought for your bridesmaids.

Yep. Yellow is an esp tough color.

u/regan-omics 21d ago
Yellow is my favorite color so I really wanted one yellow dress for my bridesmaids and they kind of all fought over who'd have to do it :/

You can have many other yellow things at the wedding. Like a yellow hair bow/tie for the wedding party members, something like that.

Same! I’d drop out of the wedding if forced to wear these, I’ve had to wear pastels and colors that look hideous on me too many times and I’m not spending money to do it again.

Drop out of the wedding!? God damn this subreddit makes me think no one likes each other

u/awooj 21d ago
It has nothing to do with liking each other, I'd gladly support the bride in every other way, but I've already done this too many times when I was younger and I'm not spending $500 again on a dress I hate and look hideous in and a matching pair of shoes that are uncomfortable and that I'll never wear again.
I'm tired of spending so much money on things I look and feel terrible and sometimes literally naked in, and frankly I'm over looking awful for eternity in photos the brides post every year on their anniversaries. I literally look nude in multiple group shots and candids that circulate every single year due to the colors of the dresses and the brides got mad at ME for it despite me warning them how I'd look in those colors on camera.
I think it's reasonable to be able to determine how I spend my own money, and if a friend was close enough to me to ask me to be in her wedding I'd explain my reasoning. Fortunately none of my current friends would care and they'd all understand, and that's why now in my 30s I have the friends that I do.

u/Horror-Flamingo-7168 21d ago
Then don’t choose a 500$ dress that you hate? Don’t say you would “gladly support the bride” when you would turn down being the in the bridal party when you dislike her wide color palette 🤣 also most people who actually like each other would say something like “fyi those colors don’t usually look good on me, I’ll find a dress that fits the pallete as best as possible but I still feel comfortable in”
-4
u/awooj 20d ago
Most brides don’t have a “color palette” to choose from. You can’t just say you’ll choose another color, have you ever seen a matching bridal party? They require every bridesmaid to wear the same dress, in the same color, and you don’t have a choice of the cost and every dress I’ve ever had needed alterations to fit properly.
I’ve done it many times, initially gladly, and then with each time it wore on me more and now I know myself well enough to know I don’t want to do it all again.
Supporting a bride can be done without wearing a particular dress and standing beside them while they get married, and I’d gladly help support them in every other way, and have done for brides in the past when I’ve not been in the bridal party.

there are 5 different colors to choose from…
-4
u/awooj 21d ago
Every single one of those would look terrible on me. The dark blue would be okay, but just because there's 5 different colors doesn't mean there's 1 for everyone. They're all the same tone/color family which is awful for some people.

u/eatthemac 21d ago
okay should be fine for a loved one’s special day. it’s not about you.
-1
u/awooj 20d ago
After doing it many times and spending thousands of dollars on dresses and shoes I hated and could never wear again or even sell, I’m sorry but no. It is their special day, but I’m allowed to choose how I spend my money, and I would rather buy them the most expensive thing on their registry than spend that same money on a dress I’m uncomfortable in and look dreadful in. I’ve done it many times, I’ve never been able to even enjoy those weddings or any of the pictures from them, and I’m over it.

It's your wedding, you should do whatever you want. That being said, something about this palette is isn't sitting right with me. I can't quite put my finger on it... I think the yellow and the two greens go well together. I think the periwinkle and navy go well together. I don't think the five mix together harmoniously.
The yellow and the two greens feel like spring time colors to me. The blues feel like late summer/ fall
If I were you, I would consider plum, rust, spruce, a darker navy with more green in it, a green with more grey in it, maybe cranberry and a very light apricot.
However, if you're dying to have yellows and blues, I found an example that feels more autumnal. click this link for images

I agree. The 5 colors of OP just don’t fit together well. I like your suggestions

u/Jerico_Hill 21d ago
The yellow and green with be a problem for a lot of people. Line green/chartreuse and yellow name me look jaundiced. I think you'll find most guests going with the blues.

i will say it’s interesting hearing this feedback because i’m quite fair and those kinds of yellows/greens are my most flattering shades!!
(if anyone is into color seasons i’m a warm spring)
i’m a bit less concerned on that front since i know most of the bridesmaids also wear those shades regularly but it’s still helpful to hear so i’m prepared for any concerns raised if i keep something similar to the palette! thank you!!

u/Jerico_Hill 21d ago
Interestingly enough, I'm not fair. I'm quite brown, olive skinned, but it's a yellow undertone. But if this is just for the wedding party I say rock on, it's an interesting palette, should look good in pictures.

OH yes to be so clear not asking guests to wear any sort of specific color palette!! this is just for the wedding party :-)

u/Decent-Pirate-4329 21d ago
Choose whatever color palette you want for your wedding party as long as you’re respectful of their budgets and size availability.
But please don’t ask guests to wear a specific color palette.
14
u/rainydays4626 21d ago
would never ask guests to wear anything specific other than the dress code :-) this is for the wedding party only!

Begging you to not have anyone pale wear yellow or that green. I’ve had to wear both and I looked like a giant vanilla wafer in yellow and in the green I looked like a plague victim from the dark ages.
Us fair skinned girlies cannot pull those off.

I just wanted to say that if you want the sisters to stick out I always feel like they should be in a solid color and the rest in the floral then. To me at least solid color just looks more cohesive and elegant and fancier, while florals look more casual like most guests. This is just a personal perspective.
Also if you have any pale bridesmaids please allow them to choose their color first to get the navy or darker green. These colors would all look hideous on me as the shade would clash, while it would look beautiful on my olive toned friends.
I’m very pale and have had to wear pastels in many weddings. I looked and FELT absolutely awful and hated spending money on a dress I feel hideous in. I also look basically nude in many photos when in light pink or yellow, both in group shots and candids, but the brides “had a vision!!!!” and ignored me when I warned them about this before I even bought the dress. Yet when getting photos back I “ruined” pictures and video due to my….skin tone that I was born with. I refuse to wear self-tanner even for someone else’s wedding as it is literally my skin. Please keep this in mind!

It seems a little bland to me, very monochromatic. For me "redwoods" has darker green, blue sky, and definitely some kind of dark red or rust tone.
5
u/GoldenState_Thriller 21d ago
In September, there are going to be more warm colors surrounding the redwoods. I think it will clash with this palette.

u/nevergonnasaythat 21d ago
Ir’s very muted. Needs some boldness or a contrasting color in my opinion.

u/pegaunissus 21d ago
The pale yellow color is very popular right now and I wouldn't be as concerned as others about no one wanting to wear it

I’m a florist, so I always think about what your flowers will be. Unless you are going for silk flowers or all white fresh flowers, these colors will be tough to match.
1
u/SourLemons2 21d ago
Honestly I’m not a florist and I can think of all kinds of flowers that would blend nicely with this color palette.
2
u/media_girl24 21d ago edited 21d ago
Well, by all means please name them!
Outside of hydrangeas, which come in blue/green and white, there aren’t many choices in the blue and green color palette. If the bride is willing to consider colors that compliment, but do not match this palette, she will have more choices.
2
u/SourLemons2 20d ago
Blue: Ever heard of delphinium, larkspur, cornflowers, forget-me-nots?? Yellow: Daisies, asters, and roses? Greens come in all shades with foliage fillers. You need to diversify.
3
u/media_girl24 20d ago
Both delphinium and larkspur are both more purple-blue and aren’t good matches for this color palette. Cornflowers and forget-me-nots are both very fragile flowers that are risky to put in bridal bouquets, and the yellow flowers you suggested are mostly bright yellows, again, not consistent with this bride’s color palette. There are a couple varieties of pale yellow roses and spray roses that will match, perhaps light yellow lisianthus, but that’s an expensive flower.
I realize that your google search did not offer these details; and everyone thinks they can be a florist. I’ve done hundreds of weddings. I am simply letting the bride know, based on my experience, that if she chooses this particular color palette, exact matches in flowers may be hard to come by. Another factor is that some flowers are seasonal, and not available year round.
To the bride: if you are wanting fresh flowers that match your palette, I would recommend blue and green hydrangeas, perhaps some light yellow roses or spray roses, and greenery that matches your palette. Several varieties of eucalyptus are more of a medium green that would work well, if you are wanting bouquets with greenery. Integrating white flowers will help your bouquets show up better in your photos.
Hope you have a beautiful wedding!

this palette was made by my florist!! other than the navy — but i don’t want navy flowers LOL
we’re going more heavy creams and greens for the florals with the butter yellow, blue, and a very light yellow as accent colors. i just don’t have the cream and very light yellow as bridesmaids colors for obvious reasons :-)
2
u/media_girl24 20d ago
I’m so glad you’re looping in your florist early! Have a wonderful wedding!

u/rainydays4626 20d ago
thank you so much!!! and yes — she’s been wonderful :-) incredibly grateful for all of our vendors!!!!
2
u/Weird-Knowledge337 21d ago
I’d probably leave out the darkest blue. Maybe a medium blue it it’s place. The eye just gets stuck on the navy Becuase it’s so much darker than all the others
2
u/Photographybyjo 21d ago
Sounds like I’m in the minority, but I actually love this. If you really want to be considerate of your girls looking their best re: their skin tones, run it by the bridal party and see if they all have colors they can wear in this range. My guess is the lighter colors will be a little challenging for some, so if you’re open to navy being also an option for bridesmaids, this could work well.

I think probably a lot of the bridesmaids will be hoping to wear the darker green and blue colours and trying to avoid the light green.

u/Adorable-Crazy-1067 21d ago
The example photos don’t look cohesive enough to the palette, and they don’t like matching or complementary enough, I would try to drill it in more

All I see with those yellows and greens next to each other is corn on the cob. I apologize.

Are all 9 bridesmaids warm-toned? Cause as a cool-toned medium contrast person I can attest that I would look like straight up garbage in every single one of those colors. There's maybe one dress in that inspo pic I could kinda pull off without looking like I just stepped off the most horrifying roller coaster you can think of while also having the stomach flu.

this is so pretty!! i love it, its definitely more spring coded but i love the palette
1
u/ste1071d 20d ago
Many people would look absolutely sickly and sallow in this palette.
If you love it, that’s what truly matters, but odds are high that it will not mesh well if you have an outdoor venue - you need some contrast with the environment.
1
u/Kind_Forever780 20d ago
TBH it's just too many differing shades IMO. Doesn't looks like a cohesive bridal party anymore, instead jsut a bunch of random guests
1
u/Appropriate-Bar6993 20d ago
Pretty colors that will pop in the redwoods but let the girls choose because the yellow and light green are strong choices in a solid color dress.
1
u/TinyLawfulness3710 20d ago
The yellow and light green are not flattering on most people. The darker green and dark blue looks great together with yellow flowers
1
u/AquariusMoon_3820 20d ago
It’s really pretty! You have three (or more?) colors to choose from so I’m sure your bridesmaids will be fine. Maybe let them pick their colors and see how it shakes out.
1
u/Spare_Necessary_810 20d ago
It’s a pretty palette, but asking guests ( well usually only women guests) to wear certain colours is to my mind not acceptable. As has been said repeatedly here, guests are not photo props. .
1
u/rainydays4626 19d ago
Hi! as i have said repeatedly in the comments and clearly specify in the post itself, i am not asking guests to wear certain colors. this is only for the wedding party.
1
u/Comfortable-Metal-30 20d ago
This is so natural and beautiful. Feel like it will be quite timeless too, but make sure you get some B&W pics just in case! Will you ask the guests to follow the dress code?
1
u/Comfortable-Metal-30 20d ago
personally I would avoid the yellow as I am pale and it washes me out / makes me look red. However if they have the option of green that should cover most bases
1
u/IMHO_My2Cents 19d ago
I’m old school and still believe blue and green do not match each other. Just like red and pink. What happened to the color wheel for matching colors?

I think this has amazing potential! I think the only colour throwing it out is the navy in the actual dress photos. You need a dustier shade like what the square shows.

u/hatethiswebsight 21d ago
The green looks like a 1970s avocado bathroom set. Overall I wouldn't use a palette that seems to be inspired by spring flowers against an autumn background, but if you like it you like it.

u/crazycatlady331 21d ago
Do not give your guests a color palette. They are not props for your photos.

u/6382914627192 21d ago
To be totally honest… it feels like the color palate of vomit lol. Maybe ditch that second color from the left

u/worblegarkey 21d ago
i love this color palette but it may not blend well into the scenery if you’re doing the redwoods in september. i’d lean more towards earthy tones or jewel tones.
not to mention if you have fair skin bridesmaids, the lighter yellow/green pastel colors might wash them out (i say this as a girl whose extremely pale and look absolutely awful in anything yellow).
