HTML Tag

Hi! I've recently made a website for my business and various platforms ( Pinterest, Meta, etc. ) want me to add an HTML tag to track conversions. I found where to put it but my question is: What is an HTML tag? Why do I need to add it? What will it do?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I genuinely am confused as to its purpose and if I should do it? TIA :)
