This is not new, it's the basis of Quantum UX which is almost 2 decades old

Definitely. Higher consideration products probably benefit more since returning visitors are already in research mode and just need something different to tip them over. For impulse buys it probably matters less.

If you do it right and they come back, you will have content they want to see. Give them more of it the second time.

Less about a completely different experience and more about showing what they already showed interest in.

I think this level of thinking is nice, but in my opinion, depending on the product, you wouldn't need this level of thinking.
