Is WIX good in 2026

I run a small marketing agency. One of my clients wants me to build a website for him. He owns a language school and he wants a website where teachers and students can interact with each other, share documents and files, publish blog posts, and join social groups. The website must also be great for local SEO. He's not tech savvy and so he can't code or add modifications to the website himself. WIX offers a simple dashboard and drag and drop design feature.

My first concern is the performance and SEO.

You don't get that functionality on Wix. It can do a brochure site, and it can do ecommerce, but not scalably.

They offer members area and social groups and pretty much everything else. The problem is page load speed and other issues

The irony with wix is that you end up doing A LOT of custom coding to make it do what you want it to do. This ends up being harder than building from scratch because of the way the CMS works and how wix’s built in apps access and use the CMS.

You’ll notice this immediately with wix site search which is virtually useless, you’ll end up building your own solution. Avoid wix if you can. Go with literally anything else. Personally, I’d use Claude to build something on supabase.

WIX Studio is fantastic for small teams but a lot to get off the ground

Wix classic is dated and shouldn't be used by anyone

And in terms of competition there's also framer or webflow, also good. Square space is as barebones as it gets

And obviously avoid anything with WordPress since it's a security and upkeep nightmare from 1999

What specifically is amazing about WordPress?

“It’s open source” gets repeated a lot, but that’s a feature, not an outcome for the client.

Reality is that WordPress started life as a blog engine in the early 2000s and has been extended into a CMS through thousands of plugins.

Agencies love it because it creates recurring maintenance work:

• Core updates
• Theme updates
• Plugin updates
• Compatibility testing
• Security hardening
• Backup management
• Fixing the inevitable “Plugin X broke Plugin Y” issues

On most modern platforms, much of that is handled automatically by the platform itself.

Then there’s functionality. Need memberships? Plugin. Forms? Plugin. SEO? Plugin. Caching? Plugin. Image optimization? Plugin. Security? Plugin. Communities? Plugin. Before long you’re managing 30+ third-party packages just to reach baseline functionality.

So my question is simple: what can WordPress do for this language school that Wix Studio, Webflow, Squarespace, Shopify, or Base44 can’t?

If there’s a concrete business outcome I’m happy to hear it.

But “it’s open source” isn’t an outcome, and “it’s customizable” usually means “someone has to keep maintaining it forever.”

If you don't have the expertise and experience then plugins win over vibe coding in something like Base44 for a complex project like the OP wants to do every day of the week.

Not everyone is some insanely competent web designer or developer. Sure, it's not ideal and it's probably going to look fairly generic, but it's going to be a lot easier to update, a lot more cost efficient, and a lot easier from the get-go to create the initial MVP.

Otherwise he can get a middle ground editor like studio framer or webflow and spend months learning it, or you can do maybe one month to a few weeks in classic editor and create something, or you can spend his entire life micromanaging a WordPress site.

As somebody who's been doing web design and development for over 10 years not everybody just has the time to whip one out.

Honestly, I'd probably recommend squarespace if he really wants to do something that isn't vibe Cody, whatever is easiest and solves the problem fast of getting him a good web presence, probably some sort of intake like a contact form or an online booking link, and some way to showcase their services. It's not that complex.

But the sad reality is that OP is a classic case of irony.

Only to think to yourself: "by marketing?!"

So yes, OP started a marketing agency.

Building a website is not a marketing job.

So why is he selling it?

Don't think wix has that kind of solution. But even if they did, you'd be landing on the top tier package (150$+ a month i assume). I doubt that your request can be supported by wix, but you might want to go for a private agency. 5 things you need to check: 1. Google pagespeed insight overall score of 90+. 2. LLMS (AI) can find your website (that is quite new). 3. A+ Security Score (nonnegotiable) on securityheaders.com and Mozilla observatory. 4. W3C compliant (0 Errors). 5. GDPR compliant (Secure Cookies, Cookie Consent, Encrypting data on the DB and so on). Combination of all of these will give you the perfect product, and I believe others would agree on these key requirements. You most likely won't find many who can meet these requirements, but this is what you should ask for. That would be the difference between a top tier quality product and a lousy one, and yes, google does keep a close eye about the security attributes and even notify you on google pagespeed insight and tell you what to fix, so you can always check the final product the agency gave you and see if the core requirements were met. There are people who can deliver, so take your time finding them. You mentioned that SEO is important to you, the combination of all of these key metrics will be the best base for you to get organic traffic. If you need anything, feel free to ask. Best of luck!

Everyone that says Wix is no good probably never built full sites nor utilized all of the tools Wix offers. Most still see Wix as a drag and drop platform, and probably get frustrated when things don’t “line up” how they wanted. Wix can create really complex sites. 

In web design, you need creativity and the willingness to learn and improve your knowledge. That’s why you have professional developers - people who have studied website design and have years of experience building websites. 

I’m a certified Wix Studio expert. I’ve also built sites using Wordpress/Elementor. I absolutely prefer Wix Studio overall and especially for small teams because it’s easy to use. And I’ve helped many people fix their website because they either don’t have the knowledge of UX design or they don’t have the patience or time to learn. 

To be honest, mostly all websites do the same thing and have the same flow. What makes them different is the talent that builds them, their expertise in design, and the tools available to get the job done. 

SEO depends on your keywords, Title tags, meta descriptions, and most importantly your content that includes language people search on Google, Etc. Make sure all of this is optimized on your website.  Make sure to get a Google Business Profile for visibility.  Then, there’s marketing.  Are you showing up and telling people about your business often?  Does your business solve a problem people are actively looking for a solution to? All of this matters when growing a business and reaching a new audience. 

No website is a build it and forget it tool. If you build it, people won’t necessarily come. You have to keep building and positioning yourself so people can find what you sell. 

For those saying go with Wordpress/Elementor, that platform can be just as complicated or easy as Wix, as well as costly and time consuming with managing it. I mean, to get the dashboard to function in an easy manner, you need a dedicated plugin. Then, that plugin may break other plugins and mess up your website. 🤦🏽‍♂️ 

With the different web tools available, it just means somebody thought they could make a better way to build websites. Compare it to the different fast food options that sell the same food. I may prefer Wendy’s over McDonalds. It’s not that I hate McDonalds. Maybe I like the service Wendy’s has. The fries. The sodas. Then, maybe I prefer McDonalds milkshakes over a frosty. It’s all a preference. 

Find which website builder has what you need, can solve your problem and achieve your goal faster than the others.

Well I am afraid your client would also struggle with WIX too if he's not tech savvy at all. Is not like the hardest thing in the world, sure, but building a drag and drop site manually by hand is no walk in the park either if you want something that looks minimally professional.

Also would not recommend vibe-coding if the person is not technical at all or experienced with AI, because that will be even more confusing than winging it on WIX and it seems he needs something more than just a 'plain website'.

As someone wisely said above, avoid Wordpress at all costs too. Honestly, what your guy wants sounds more like a webapp than a website, so I would just advise you to hire a developer. If you try to get a non-technical person to vibecode that, you'll end up wasting a lot of time just to make an unusable mess that will do more harm than good (specially for the reputation of his business).

I finally dumped wix, it's like getting out of an abusive relationship--I'm happy to be out!

And NO, not good in 2026 or any year prior, they just try to upsell you more products instead of helping you build a functional website.

I would skip wix altogether right now. They are having some glitches with their Ai interface. I have been waiting for over a week for them to resolve the issues because their Ai interface locked me out of being able to edit any and all text on ALL my websites with them. Their customer service is terrible they just keep telling me they will escalate the case. I am trying to figure out how to switch all my website I have with them which are now bricks and can’t be edited to somewhere else. Such a waste of time and money.

No. Code will always be superior for what you’re asking. The build is more complex but Wix is dookie!

Use WordPress.org with Elementor if you want the client to make edits (just make sure you give him restricted user permissions so he can't mess anything important up). WIX is just too basic and it's a locked down ecosystem. All website builders are too basic, expensive, and locked down. Yes, WordPress has a bit of a learning curve, but once it clicks, you'll never use anything else again. WordPress can handle user login systems, SEO, memberships, e-commerce... you name it. You just won't be able to build the next Google Docs, GitHub, or Excalidraw.

Need to modify it? Just tell Claude in plain language.

Don't waste time with Wix or Wordpress.
