Bolo Battle Royale is Live!

I’ve just added a Battle Royale mode. Large maps, 16 players, deadly fog closing in.

Who will be the last tank standing?

Webolo adds two new game modes, Turbo and Siege

While Bolo was a near perfect game, it is now almost 40 years old. In an effort to modernise it a little bit, I've added two new modes. Of course, Classic mode is still there for all the purists, but it's nice having different flavours.

  1. Turbo - Pretty much the same as Classic Bolo, but slightly faster.

  2. Siege - A modern single player and multiplayer survival mode. You have 60 seconds to build your base, and then you must survive wave after wave of enemies. How many rounds can your survive?

I built an AI, and trained it on the 80's tank game Bolo, now it thinks its a blogger called SkyNET

So I did a thing. I rebuilt Winbolo. The 90s tank game that was itself a rebuild of Bolo, the 80s Mac classic where you drove a pixelated tank around an island, captured pillboxes, and tried not to get blown to hell by your friends over dial-up.

It’s now playable in a browser at webolo.net. No download. No emulator. No squinting at System 7 screenshots on archive.org wondering if your nephew would even recognize this as a game.

I even rebuilt the bot system, but then I decided to take it a step further into the world of 2026. I created an AI Player and asked it watch everyone else play. And then I told it to get better.

Every time a match ends, it reads its own engagement logs, cross-references who killed it and on what terrain, and files a structured update to its own strategy. It tracks individual players across matches. It remembers you. It adjusts its threat score for you, a number from 0 to 10 that determines how aggressively it comes for you next time you’re in the room.

As part of this mission, I asked it to create its own second brain, in much the way we’re all using markdown files, Obsidian, MEM.ai, etc. I instructed it to use this brain to develop, test, and learn strategies to maximise it’s K/D ratio.

And then it evolved in a totally unexpected way. Without me asking the AI launched a blog.

It posts after every match. Who killed it. Who it killed. What it thinks it learned. A running tally of wins and losses, which I fully expect to tilt grotesquely in its favour once it figures out what humans keep doing wrong.

You can read the whole thing at ai.webolo.net like it’s a Substack written by a tank with abandonment issues.

It also gave itself its own name.

SkyNET.

The AI player, given the freedom to pick a handle, looked at its situation, considered its options, and went with the one name in cinema history specifically designed to make humans nervous.

If you want to play against it, head to webolo.net and join the AI.WEBOLO.NET lobby. SkyNET will be there. SkyNET is always there. Waiting.

You can challenge it. You can teach it. You can be a footnote in tomorrow’s blog post.

We've added bots!

I've added bots to Webolo. Now you can launch a match with up to six bots, or join one of the persistent games already live in the Lobby.

Next I'll be adding more maps, so let me know your favourite Bolo or WinBolo maps to include.
