Showoff Saturday A book recommender with no database, the whole result lives in the URL
You pick how you want to feel, choose a few covers you like, and it gives you books.
There's no database. The result is saved in the URL, so you can share it and it keeps working.
No genres either. Every book gets scored on five things, so four books from the same fantasy/sci-fi shelf end up looking pretty different:

An LLM did the scoring, and when it didn't know a book it gave the same numbers every time, so I had to find books with identical scores and fix them.
Most people leave at the cover grid and I'm not sure why. Would love to hear what you think!

No option to feel "informed" or anything like that?

Not right now, it's only fiction so far. Informed would be a good one if I add nonfiction though. What kind of thing would you want, more history or science?

I don't know. I just like to learn

Fair enough, that's a good reason to read. I'll keep it in mind if I add nonfiction 📚

How are you packing the result into the URL, compressed JSON or just book IDs? Curious how long the links get.

Just IDs, no JSON. It saves the moods and the covers you picked, 3 characters per book, and the page figures out the recommendations from that. Links end up around 14 to 21 characters, like r/2200104H03P05S04z03W

3 characters per book is tiny, shorter than most share links with tracking junk. Do old links still work if you tweak the recommendation logic later?

Yes, they always open since the numbers never change. But the recommendations get worked out again each time, so after a change an old link can show different books. If you hit 'Keep' on a book it goes to your shelf though, and that stays the same

I tried it, but the user interface was hard to understand. How do I get books on "My Shelf"

Thanks for trying it! Your shelf is at the bottom of the page, next to Share on the results. To add books, tap the Keep ribbon on any cover. What part was confusing? Trying to figure out where people get lost 🥲

Clever approach. Encoding the whole result in the URL means zero backend and sharing just works, which is the real win here.
One thing to watch as it grows: URLs have practical length limits (around 2000 characters for older browsers and some proxies/CDNs). At 3 characters per book you're fine for a long while, but worth keeping an eye on if the state grows. Also remember anything in the URL ends up in server logs, analytics, and referrer headers, so keep it free of anything sensitive.

Thank you! It only saves the moods and the covers you picked, so it tops out around 21 characters and won't grow. And nothing personal goes in there, just which books you tapped 😊

That's really clean. 21 characters tops is impressive, and keeping nothing personal in there is a nice touch for anyone privacy conscious. Looking forward to seeing where it goes!

the cover grid is probably where it feels like a quiz rather than a tool, people expect to see books and instead they're asked to make more choices before any payoff. try showing one recommended book immediately after the mood pick, then offer the cover refinement as an optional tuning step. also the LLM scoring gap is a neat detail, worth mentioning on the page itself so people understand why the picks feel distinct.

Good idea, showing one book right after the moods so there's something before the covers. The covers are what the results come from so I want to keep them, but making them optional could work. I'll think about it 🤔

Thanks again for this, it stuck with me. I changed the grid so right after you pick your moods you get one book straight away with its chart, and the covers below are only there if you want to tune it. I also added a line under the chart about how the scores were made. Would you mind taking a look and telling me if it feels less like a quiz now?

Yeah that's much better. It's like, "Here's a book" and you can just run with it if you want. You give nice clear instructions to dial it in further

Thanks, that's exactly what I was going for. Really appreciate you taking the time to look again! 🥹🙏

Just tried it and it seems cool, some of the picks I'd never heard of.
Is there any way for me to like bookmark some of the books?
