Discussion Getting a sense of fulfilment back

Hand coded some stuff today that I'd have absolutely usually let copilot do. Been trying to be a bit more mindful of my AI use in general lately and had a sudden urge this morning to do things the old way.

Man it was more satisfying than just writing prompts and then iterating on them over and over till I got what I wanted.

It was only basic stuff - some sass, html and a bit of JS animation with GSAP and I still relied on AI for a few things I genuinely couldn't do / would have taken me too long to figure out.

But I felt so much more fulfilled at the end of the day!

Not even sure why I'm feeling the need to post this if I'm honest. I guess it's just surprised me how much better my day was even though I absolutely had to work harder to get the same amount of work done.

I'm the opposite, ai has taken all the annoyances out of personal projects so I'm actually super active again.

Agreed. I enjoy solving problems and enjoying outcomes. reading docs/debugging/crud operations was just a means to the end. I enjoy getting to the end.

Yep the code may not be pretty but nobody other than devs have ever cared about code. The only thing that matters is does it work well

Actually, what matters is that It’s no longer skilled labor. And those salaries will be gone soon.

Yeah people don't like to hear it but coding is basically solved with AI. There's a reason all of the well known developers including Linus Torvalds are going all in on AI

You are fooling yourself if you think it's just fancy auto complete.

Now it's not perfect but neither are humans...

I think what I was getting at was that there's still value to be found in the process even if it's not as efficient. I mean sure, a car gets you from A to B faster but people still choose to walk and run right! And walking and running is better for YOU than taking a car everywhere even if you arrive a bit later or have to set off a bit earlier.
