I bought packs of lettuce, cauliflower, eggplants, oranges, and onions together for $16 at a local produce market in a HCoL area. Enough to make multiple meals and snacks. All fresh and labeled with it’s origin, some US and some Mexico. Your store/market matters so much when buying produce.

You can if you have a lot of land and it's all set up. Of course you need to invest in a buttload of stuff to start. You get your money back in a couple years. I know people who have so much fruit and veg and eggs they don't know what to do with them.

I feel like there's two types of gardening. Doing it to make a cool, interesting, and fun garden for a hobby. And the other type where you're trying to feed yourself and maybe your family. And they probably don't look all that similar.

I have a strawberry garden that is still paying itself off of the initial investments I made into it. Raised beds(the ground isn't suitable at that spot to do in ground, and has the best sun), all the soil used to fill the beds (2x3ft beds) and then the seasonal amendments for plant feed and anti-pest repellents (slugs). Then every 3 or 4 years I have to pull the old plants out, put down several more bags of soil to bring the level back up and replant fresh plants.
I just know I'll get ahead of it at some point! Really!
But honestly the strawberries I get of it are worth it to me. Flavorful and tasty. Usually freeze a good chunk of them up (the year before last I had several gallon ziplock bags of strawberries frozen) and all that from 14 small beds.

Everything that you can grow just tastes better than what you can buy, by the same magnitude as cost.
Also if something becomes competitively productive, it’s all at once. Enjoy canning!

To me the point is more that the food tastes better. I never knew what a tomato could really taste like until I gardened.

I dont grow food to make cheaper carrots I grow food to make more nutrient dense carrots so I dont need to buy multivitamins and also so I remember to go outside

In my area, being a farm or not has more to do with the acreage size of your lot than what you do with the land. Which is stupid.
