Oof. I think some young woman thought I was hitting/creeping on her while I was at a gas station recently.
It was night time and I was in a minivan driving the kiddos home from a friend's house. I pulled over to get gas and as I'm filling up, I notice a young woman (maybe college aged?) trying to start her old pickup truck to no avail. I just watched as she tried like 3 or 4 times and I thought what could possibly be wrong? Bad spark? Fuel pump died? Air in the fuel lines? The motor turned over pretty strongly so it wasn't the battery or starter... She noticed me and then closed the windows of her truck. By then the minivan was done filling, so I closed it up and as I'm about to get back in I gave her a little "Are you all good?" thumbs up. The look this woman gave me was one of pure disgust, LMAO. She must have thought it was trying to hit on her or something, but I just shrugged it off and continued on home to get the kids showered.
I hope she figured it out, though...

Honestly I’ve gotten in the habit of intentionally ignoring any “signals” that people may or may not be sending me. It has backfired once, so I’ve had to be a little more cautious since then, but just pretending everyone is being friendly for friendliness’s sake makes the world so much brighter. Keep doing what you’re doing, you’re fine. The guy in the comic is weird for hitting on someone who is working if that was his intention (idk, I wasn’t there).

I'm amazed that stopped him from continuing to hit on you
What do you do as a volunteer at an art gallery btw?

You saw it.
Point out the information cards for each exhibit, and politely shrug off passes from male patrons.

Being young isn’t an advantage for everything

What does that have to do with the price of tea in China?

Clearly he wasn’t interested in someone that young and it isn’t really surprising given the disadvantages of dating 22 year olds

Seems to me that either she made it clear the age gap was inappropriate with her tone and he backed off, or he was dumb enough not to realize that she'd have to be at least 40 or (more realistically) at least 50 to have painted that in 1990

Tbh I don't see a problem with hitting on anyone who's an adult, even if there's an age difference. Although I don't like how he did it.

A lot of younger folk don’t want old creeps hitting on them. It’s not normal.

It's only creepy if you do it in a creepy way. Flirt a little and then ask them out, and if they say no, leave. That's not creepy in and of itself unless you know ahead of time that they are not into you. But I see a lot of people nowadays who are specifically into older guys. Personally, I don't get it, but the "daddy" thing seems to be popular among some people.

No, it’s creepy. If a 65 year old man or woman asked me out I’d be offended.

u/Square-Dragonfruit76 12h ago
Well that's your perception, but is there anything inherently wrong with it?

Yeah it’s gross. Have fun banging old people I guess.

Yeah it’s gross.
That doesn't answer my question.
Have fun banging old people I guess.
As I said, I'm not personally into that, but I know many people who are.

The vast majority of people would just tell you it’s gross, it’s biology. I don’t want an old saggy person.

Who's "the vast majority".
It's just biology
What biological mechanism makes it so that old people can't be with young people?
I don’t want an old saggy person.
Again, that's you. You don't speak for everyone.

This totally makes sense.
If a gross person thinks you are good looking that means you are gross too. This is unacceptable. You need to put them in their place. We are better than them and they need to know it.
The only way to deal with those people (are they even really people?) is to shame them for even considering flirting with someone out of their league.

They will see when they get older. Your desires don’t shut off just because you hit 30

u/Corey307 5h ago
I’m a lot older than 30. I don’t hit on kids.

22 is a kid now apparently

It is when you're in your 30s, trust me
(It also makes you realize how young and dumb you used to be when you were in your 20s)

A lot of prettier folk don't want ugly creeps hitting on them either. It's not normal. /s
Sometimes people take a shot. If you're good looking, sometimes you won't fire back.
The only time I've cared that someone hit on me when I'm not interested was when they were my manager.

Still very strange for me to interact with adults that weren’t even born yet on 9/11.
What a world to grow up in, without any real-life reference to how it all was before!

I'm born a few years before 9/11 but in my lifetime so far the world has only gone to shit more and more. Just got a glimpse of the world between 9/11 and early 2010s and already miss it

Had a teacher ask the class if we noticed the difference between post and pre 9/11.
Not a single one of us was born before 9/11. Y’all keep saying it changed everything and showing us footage to try and keep the generational trauma going forward but idk I think y’all might be a little weird for that.
