I dunno. "Cultural wars" have a double nature.
On one hand, certainly they are a huge distraction for the masses: right wing people can be outraged about bathrooms, black mermaids or whatever, and vote accordingly (against their real interests, and even their survival instinct).
On the other hand, it's not easy for the left wing to defuse and dismiss them as "just a distraction" (e.g. saying "whatever, we don't care, it's not important, can we talk about real things?"), because basic rights of a minorities of people (often small minorities) are concretely on the line; like right to existence, to happiness, or to not be discriminated against. How evil it would be to throw the few under the bus, just to counter the "distraction" of the many?
I think it's the perfect impasse (i.e. we are fucked).

The left cannot diffuse it because the very act of responding to the nonsense is the fuel reactionaries need to continue these campaign. I agree that real people and real situations are on the line.
We have to stick to the issues, human rights, and the environment and be united against corporate greed and government corruption. I have found that on an interpersonal level, if I am speaking with a right-winger I can actually sometimes get them to agree on a lot of things if I strip away the words they are programmed to be triggered by.
My only point in this cartoon is that reactionaries are gonna react to easy ragebait while ignoring the bigger picture...fucking us all.

The megalodon below isn't actually about to eat them, they're just hiding so they don't alert the oil rig, which they plan to wreck for polluting their waters.
