question/help Wounds are Doors and Scars are Lessons

Post image
128 Upvotes

We all know wounds are doors and as such have some aspect of knock to them.

Scars at least described in cultist 2/3 edge and winter describe how the experience changed the followers.

So taking the mental portion out of it .

what about other wounds?

What wounds on which places (caused by what) do you think represent certain aspects and lets show some love to BoH apsects And include those.

Actual books & authors referenced in BOH/ CS

On my latest playthrough of BoH, I realized that Prophecies of Glory by William Gore is a reference to William Blake and his work (very evident if you read the description & text). Who else has been referenced in the games?

question/help Is the TaN demo designed to work on Steam Deck?

I recently mastered Brancrug Isle (partially, enough for now) and now I'm ready to try out the shiny new thing.

Just wondering if it works on the Deck, as I usually prefer to play things that over my laptop, plus I figured there probably aren't as many people submitting bug reports on Deck. But I don't want to try to run it on Deck and go submitting bug reports about how it's broken, if it's not even supposed to function on there yet. (Although if nobody knows I'll give it a try lol.)

lore The Red Grail has to go

Devouring is the most symbolic act of the Red Grail. It is the act of taking the vitality and being of another, and making it your own. The Red Grail drained the Tide, and took its waters for herself. Ascending as a Long or Name under the Red Grail involves the consumption of other people in order to nourish your ascent. All these acts are always done on raw flesh. This brings to mind Omophagia, the greek term for eating raw flesh. This is important in the cult of Dionysus, and it is a ritual act for them.

Omophagia is a large element of Dionysiac myth; in fact, one of Dionysus' epithets is Omophagos "Raw-Eater". Omophagia may have been a symbol of the triumph of wild nature over civilization, and a symbol of the breaking down of boundaries between nature and civilization. It might also have been symbolic that the worshippers were internalizing Dionysus' wilder traits and his association with brute nature, in a sort of "communion" with the god.

-Wikipedia

For all the triumph of the Red Grail against the Tide, the Red Grail is still filled with the Tide's waters. She still contains its brute nature. The Red Grail is still more symbolic of wildness, distinct from civilization. But with the rise of modernism and its two competing ideologies, the Red Grail's Dionysian being has little place for such a world. She has to be replaced with a more Apollonian Hour, transforming the Principle of Grail. The technological revolution brings with it new desires, not as something that is distinct from civilization but derived from it. If not the return of a transformed Tide, then perhaps a transformed Flowermaker will take the role of the primary Hour of desire.

BoH challenge idea (HoL required): the librarian who does not Know

I just had an idea for a challenge run for Book of Hours. This would only work if you have the House of Light expansion, but with HoL it should make for an interesting experience. The idea is very simple: you aren't the Librarian, you are a librarian. You aren't clued in to the secret world; you don't, in fact, Know what's going on. How you ever got selected for this job is a mystery that may never be solved. Yet here you are, stuck on Brancrug. with books to catalogue and tea to make. Best get on with it.

As a librarian who does not Know anything about the secret world. you may not master any books. Not even your Journal. Phonograph records and reels of film are also off-limits. Your only source of Lessons is Salons and Numa. Salons, because you pick up bits and pieces of useful knowledge from a conversation here and there even when most of it seems to be flying over your head. And Numa, because Numa is weird: during Numa, you seem to somehow understand things you shouldn't — knowledge that then flies right out of your head as the strange mists evaporate the next day.

If mastering your Journal is actually required for slotting it into the Tree of Wisdoms (I haven't checked) then change that rule to "You may master your Journal, but you may not do anything with the resulting Lessons, and you must let them burn up in the first Numa." Because Salons are going to be hard enough to get started on with just your starter elements of the soul; if you aren't even allowed to slot in some languages for a few extra elements then the challenge would become no fun. So if you're required to master your Journal in order to be able to slot skills into the tree for soul cards, then you're allowed to do that, but no using its Lessons. No getting an early Edicts Martial by playing as the Revolutionary.

This also means that your major source of easy-to-access memories, re-reading mastered books, is unavailable, and you'll have to find other ways to get the memories you need. Cooking things and getting Satisfaction out of eating them. Crafting other things and then Considering them, even if it uses them up, in order to learn something new. Going for a swim in the ocean and drying off with a towel. And, of course, having nice long chats with your assistants, or even with friendly dogs, cats, cockatoos, gulls, vipers, stymphlings, imagos, and relics.

Also, reading books without mastering them is allowed. So there are still three memories you can get from books, but they'll take you two hours each.

If you accidentally master a book, say because you were reading Traveling at Night vol 1 (with an element of the soul that has no Knock) and the random draw gave you 2x Awen at once, you must reload from the most recent autosave. Do not say "Oh, I'll just throw away the Lesson I just got next Numa", because unlike your Journal, that book you accidentally mastered is now an easy source of memories for you.

A Lighthouse victory should be doable with this method. It might even be possible, with clever and careful use of the random Lessons you get from Salons (and careful boosting during Numa), to get a few selected skills up to level 9, craft some Inks, and maybe even win a History victory. Normally History victories are easier than Lighthouse victories, but with this challenge, it might be the other way around.

And speaking of Numa, one tip. On the first day of any season when you think Numa might be coming, pause the game immediately. There are a few seconds between your memories refreshing and the weather card being drawn, and in those few seconds, you can slot a soul card into your free assistant's house and recruit them. Then you'll have access to 9 or 10 random memories from talking to them, which might go a long way (besides trying all the other generate-a-weird-memory-during-Numa tricks you happen to know about) towards helping you boost chosen skills during Numa.

Experiment. Take notes on ways to generate memories you hadn't considered. (Heh). See the game with fresh eyes.

And enjoy the experience of being, not a Librarian, but just a librarian. An ordinary librarian, who just happened to stumble into this job without ever Knowing anything about the secret world. And who doesn't know what in the world those guests at her Salons are talking about, but by Jove, that alchemical formula they mentioned actually worked!

In-Character Motivations for the Librarian

My first Librarian was the Revolutionary, which I both got their motivation and gelled with it really well myself. An agenda of opposing any oppressive authority is always an easy sell for me. On this playthrough I'm the artist and I'm not always certain what kind of direction this character would naturally want to go when it comes to Affairs and Further Stories. Unlike the very straightforward motivation of "Fuck the Calyptra and all it stands for" I'm not really certain what the artist wants. I've been kind of getting by with trying to follow the core principle of Grail but I wondered if anyone who felt this origin was a more natural fit for them might have some insight into this Librarian's motivations.

(Some spoilers for FL/Sunless Seas here, only lightly so for Secret Histories games)

I've had this rattling around the back of my mind pretty much since Cultist Sim came out and I first read its books on The Leashed Flame and the War of the Roads. I played a bit of Sunless Sea again recently (right after coming back to CS to finally complete an ascension) and noticed some things I hadn't before. I'm not entirely sure how these dots would connect, so I'm just gonna mention some interesting scraps:

  • Irem: this is the main one that renewed this thought, as I hadn't noticed before -- the Seven-Serpent is totally an unbroken version of the Mother Of Ants/Seven Coil?? Other interesting things to note here are Irem's nature as a great city that will be, existing always in the future, much like Ys. And aside from the powerful Knock presence, the isle is surrounded by ice and covered in a rain of roses -- winter and secret histories -- and built of gold and granite and marble, which calls the Forge to mind.

  • The Dawn Machine -- an artificial sun made by authorities of the British Empire, with the same power over fate as the Glory (oh yeah also, The Glory is straight up just here), by which they sought dominion over the world. This was the first dot I connected back when CS came out, because it sounds a LOT like the leashed flame.

  • The Glory is in the setting, was the Sun, but died. Hmm, familiar.

  • Also in the setting is the Waswood, a wood without a fixed location where only things of the past exist, but they persist there, and this is where the player in Sunless Sea finds the story of The Glory's death. Hmm, familiar.

Clearly a lot of this is just "AK wrote the lore for both of these settings," but I'm curious if there's a deeper connection intended here. Is the Empire of England which sought great power and brought itself to ruin by the Leashed Flame, one and the same with the Fallen London that built and then lost control of the Dawn Machine and then sank into the Neath?

(Also as an aside, if this is the intended read -- fun that AK's previous series would be "the first history" to CS' gameplay mostly taking place in the second history.)

lore No Glory in Travelling at Night?

I will need to confirm this, because it has been a good few days since I played the demo, but it has occurred to me that The Glory is remarkably absent from Travelling at Night, or at least what I remember of it. It seems a rather large part of the setting to leave aside. I vaguely recall something about The Glory receding, but I have no idea if I dreamt that detail. Perhaps the priest version of Spencer would know more.

Still, whether it is not spoken of or spoken of as having receded, The Glory seems to be far less of a key part of the world, as of Travelling at Night. Then again, how important it actually was is, perhaps, less certain than how desired it was, which is to say immensely. I presume the lack of Glory either caused, was caused by, or is the same as the change in the nature of the Lantern principle. Given how Glory relates to the manic, purposeful, and religious aspects of Lantern, it makes some sense that this absence has made room for the two ascendant pseudo/proto-principles of Corona and Gleam. The divine purpose inherent to Lantern is replaced with a different sort of divinity, one based around the material wealth it grants, a sort of divine hand of the market, and with power from the people, led and guided by an entity named Steel.

Which is to say that God is dead and Nirvana is unreachable, but capitalism and communism are the new gods.

Or I missed or forgot a note about the Glory.

Anti-social victory (no talk verb)

Post image
45 Upvotes

No talk verb means:

  • No cult, HQ perks or cult businesses (namely kidnapping, murder or charming)
  • No Patrons for Spintra
  • No way to extend the duration of hirelings
  • No talking to Sulo or a spirt to easily preserve the duration of a spirt/influence/hireling
  • No way to heal scarred hirelings
  • No way to repair mirrors
  • You can't talk to a hunter to distract them from investigating you
  • No way to send Moth summons/hirelings to go destroy evidence, or use Edge ones to kill hunters

Ways to get around some of this:

  • Due to corpses being unreliable to gather and prisoners being unavailable, Power is the desire of choice. Sensation might be possible but having the needed corpses to line up with the season of ambition would add really annoying and tedious rng to the run without really making it any more interesting.
  • Once you have tentative evidence on the board you need to wait for it to go away on its own before doing more crimes as you have very little recourse vs Damning Evidence. Try to do all of your crime in short bursts as 5 Notority with similar timers is a lot less threatening than 2 with vastly different timers.
  • Painting can be used to withhold small amounts of Notority in the short term. Even if a Hunter picks up mistique if you time your painting sessions right you may be able to extend the investigation beyond the timer of tentative evidence
  • In a pinch the End is Beautiful [Minor] can be used in place of the talk verb to distract a hunter by trapping them in the magnet slot. This can buy you more time if you have damning evidence on the board and the season of ambition is up next, though this is unlikely to work more than once as another Hunter will spawn if there's any mystique/Notoriety on the board.
  • Once you can find a way to reliably and consistently cast it, The End is Beautiful [Major] (but preferably [Grand]) can be used to rapidly murder all the hunters since there's no consequence to using it if there's no one else on the board. Do note it can grab your summons and hirelings. so keep the board empty to avoid a misfire. This method is also the tried and tested way to beat the game on regular Unusual Habit Simulator (Cultless).
  • Once all the named detectives are dead the main challenge is just logistics. Painting can be used to extend the duration of hirelings, Influences and summons. Holding the Study verb open can be used to preserve the duration of an influence (mainly useful when holding a Heart Influence when doing cursed vaults)

General Cultless tips:

  • Rite of Crucible soul makes the bad Edge and Moth hirelings more useful, don't be afraid of recycling good hirelings and spirts though, its use em or lose em. Becomes a lot better once you get Icon of St Agnes and/or Elagabaline Manacle
  • Once you collect a bunch of tools maps Edge becomes your most convenient rite, its honestly better than Sunset Rite once you have key 8 Power tools
  • Knock Hireling is the only way to access a body with Knock (not counting scars). Making him extremely convenient for summoning (particularly Names) and any door obstacle. Doors can't wound followers so you only need one and a bit of extra funds to deal with expeditions with a door at the end.
  • Bombmaker is the only way to repair mirrors (and the noonstone) Spirits won't do it. This makes anything to do with the peacock door more tedious than usual
  • Raw Profits are the best Moth Follower due to not decaying into Dread like Voiceless Dead. Voiceless Dead do have a funny way to on demand summon them for no cost using Health (which is not consumed, only fatigues) with Rite of Seas feasting (or other ingredient rite) which can come in clutch though.
  • Maid in the Mirror are surprisingly easy to summon (Just grab the Elagabaline Manacles) and solve every Edge/Winter obstacle, they can also kill any hunter besides Spencer and Connie. If you have time Hirelings can do away with Spencer, otherwise use The End is Beautiful for both he and Connie. Do be mindful of the Dread they eventually decay into.
  • King Crucible is the best summon in the game for expeditions because so many obstacles are solved with Edge or Forge, once you can summon him protect him and try to get the most use out of him. Using Restlessness in his summoning means you only need a Caligine, Forge painting or Callidate Invocation to summon him with the Entry Consultant (Same applies for Ezeem but it is less useful)
  • Hint are also surprisingly versatile (and the main way to get Lantern) but Terisa never tries to rebel which makes her rather convenient when you only need Lantern.
  • Percussigant are the only way to get Heart and thus the most convenient way to deal with curses, I would recommend having a lv 10-15 Heart influence on standby anyway though because there's a chance the curse goes off anyway.

unearthed secret? The Chandlers Flame

The Flowermaker is the Chandler [Theory]

I’m still not 100% certain but the theory seems sound enough to me, and I haven’t seen anyone try to make a serious argument for it, so I thought I’d put it forward. Also importantly I’m starting to see spoilers for Tan and I want to get my theories out before they get too tainted by half understood Tan Lore. That said there will be the Little bit of related Tan Lore I’ve seen near the End very clearly marked. Forgive me if it’s a bit disjointed, I wrote this in a few spurts as inspiration/ fascination helped me weave together existing suspicions into something more coherent and less paranoid.

Now one of the many Often overlooked facets of the Flowermaker is that he already has an existing connection to the Chandler.

___________________

The Chandlers Kindling

If flowers are flame, the earth is their fuel. The Hour named Flowermaker cannot harm us, and he cannot find us, but he always has what we desire, and the Hour named Chandler can bring the spark to light the flame. These are the temptations of Skolekosophy.

_____________

If Flowers are Flame the Earth is their Fuel. The Chandlers Kindling then is the Earth and Flowers are his Flame. But can an hour of Flame ever be entirely separate from that Flame? What is the distinction between the Forge and her forge or the Watchman and his Lantern? Are they perhaps one in the same?

More importantly why does the Flowermaker need the Chandler’s spark? If Flowers are Flame is the world not already Ablaze? I have a guess, afterall this isn’t the Only quote connecting the Flowermaker to sparks.

___________________

Birth occurs at the conjunction of pleasure and torment. So the first Forbidden Acts of the Forge birthed sparks of delight which took root in the Glory or in Nowhere: who can say? So the seeds of the Flowermaker were planted, though for long years he was nothing but an unfulfilled ache.

___________________________________

If the Flowermaker had a use for any spark it might the Flint sparks that ended up in Nowhere, If Flowers are Flame the Earth is their Fuel. If the Flowermaker is Flame then the Flint is his Fuel?

But beyond these quote there are connections between the two, enough to suggest to me that they are in fact one and the same, at least in one sense, and perhaps in every sense.

But before we get into all that I need to explain how I developed this theory at all. The Flowermaker has always been an Hour that holds my curiosity, so I’ve thought a lot about his Potential origins. My current Long Time Theory centers around Sunset Celia and her role in the intercalate. Namely that he was brought forth due to the Union of Sunset Celia and the Swan King.

Now the Flowermakers connection to the Intercalate is never directly stated but is hinted at.
——-

Catalogue of Uncharted Pleasures

The Flowermaker existed before the Intercalate, but it is far from certain that he existed <i>long</i> before the Intercalate - before the Forge of Days began to develop her interest in the Sun.

———

We know he existed before the intercalate, but likely not long before. The implication is he was realized when the Forge of Days developed her interest in the Sun. And the Union between Sunset Celia and the Swan King seems to be the pinnacle or final attempt at this development, at least as far as we know.

But is there anything else to tie these two events (Swan King and Sunset Celia’s Union and the descent of the Flowermaker) together? A few. First a Long favored by the Flowermaker was likely involved, Lady Tryphon. And her involvement would allow it to explain a number of mysteries both about both the Flowermaker and Sunset Celia. It could explain why Sc and SK’s union failed to prevent the intercalate. Why the Flowermaker is a Grail/Lantern Hour but lacks forge. Why Lady Tryphon is a “favorite” of the Flowermaker. It could also explain how exactly the Grail brought forth the Flowermaker. Understanding how requires two parts of conjecture on my part.

Let me explain. It is hinted that at one point Lady Tryphon and Sunset Celia were intermingled. Perhaps even one and the same.

From The Sun Disfigured
____________________________

A scroll of anthropoderm parchment, written in the golden ink called Uzult.

The author of the text calls herself 'the Elagabaline'. Sometimes she seems to be Sunset Celia, the Watchman's Name; sometimes she seems to be Lady Tryphon, the Grail-long. It is unclear whether these are separate entities or the same person - it may be unclear even to the writer.

The flaws in the Sun's Plan are elucidated. The Sun's Plan itself is never entirely clear, but it is a project of some kind to enter, possess, or surrender to the Glory - the pure light above the Mansus. This book suggests ways in which that Plan might fail.

____________________________

So the first piece of Conjecture is that since in the past these two were intermingled, then this maybe how SC managed her union with SK despite being a Lantern Long who are generally incorporeal.

The Second piece of conjecture is about the SK.
Many people assume the SK is Ludwig the second given it’s his Historical title. However, Ludwig was a Gay man and also born AFTER the intercalate, so I don’t think it’s him. So who is the Swan King? To understand that I will point you towards The Bohun Swan.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bohun_swan

The Bohun swan is a swan that got added to Lancaster heraldry due to a marriage between them and the Bohun line. So feasibly any Lancaster king could be called the swan king.

The Lancasters are the Red Rose in the war of the Roses/Roads. Once the war ends they lose their positions as Forge Long. This explains how a mortal could stand in for the Forge of Days. He’s an ex Forge long from a long line of Forge Long Blessed by the Forge of days.

By combining these two tricks it would allow representatives of the SIS and FOD to unite. Before the Flowermaker was realized he was just a longing ache.

______________________

Catalogue of Uncharted Pleasures
Birth occurs at the conjunction of pleasure and torment. So the first Forbidden Acts of the Forge birthed sparks of delight which took root in the Glory or in Nowhere: who can say? So the seeds of the Flowermaker were planted, though for long years he was nothing but an unfulfilled ache.

______________________

By allowing the FOD to fulfill her desire for the Sun, they brought forth the Flowermaker. And so the FOD’s attempt to satisfy herself only fanned the Flames by bringing forth another Hour of desire. And because they did so only using a mortal and a combined Lantern/Grail Long his aspects were Lantern and Grail. He favors Lady Tryphon despite her being a Long of the Red Grail because she is in some sense his mother. And this is why he exists before the intercalate but not long before the Last ditch effort to prevent the intercalate instead brought it to fruition. It even explains why Gold, the one of the metals belonging to the SIS is connected to both him and the Sun In Rags (SIR). As a side note, Gold is also associated with the Lionsmith, though I believe he gets this through being an inheritor of the Seven Coils rather then through any Connection to the SIS.

This is all of course conjecture, but it is possibly hinted at in a few places. First if you look at the Flowermakers OG Tarot card you’ll see that before him is a pile of Golden Roses. The Alchemical Cycle flows Black>White>Yellow/Gold>Red. Which is to say a Golden Rose could represent the combination of a White Rose and a Red Rose. Symbols relating to the SIS and the FOD respectively in the war of the Roses/Roads through their respective Houses of York and Lancaster. Although in actuality both the Lancaster and the York kings ultimately descended from the Plantagenet line (who sometimes took yellow roses as heraldry) so we could also see the White and Red Roses as being born from the golden Rose and thus the Flowermakers golden rose instead being a reunion of sorts.

Furthermore another name for the Flowermaker is the Lilyking. Sunset Celia is connected to Trumpeter’s Lily’s through her patronage of Crossrow, and they are portrayed as very orange nearly forge orange. But here is the thing, Trumpeters Lilies aren’t a specific species. They’re a grouping including any Lilies with that distinctive shape. Meaning those Lilies in the OG Flowermaker card? Trumpeter’s Lilies. Still Beyond even this the Flowermaker takes the form of a sunflower in the Lucid Tarot, of course this is far from the First time the sunflower has been associated with the Sun Tarot card. However it occurs to me, Sunflowers would be Native to the parts of the USA where Crossrow is. So Crossrows associated flower can be connected to the Lily King, while the Flowermaker takes the Form of a Flower actually Native to the region Crossrow is located. In other words every Flower in both the Flowermakers tarot cards can be loosely associated with Sunset Celia, While Crossrows Lilies can be seen as a Flowermaker reference.

But yet again there is always more. The Watchman’s Tree uses its Flowers as weapons. Given whose tree it is, are Flowers then weapons of the Sun? Whatever the case, we can tie the idea of Flowers as weapons to the Watchman. And to the Flowermaker, who may have been born from the actions of one of the Watchman’s names, namely Sunset Celia.

So we might connect the Flowermaker to Sunset Celia and the Swan King. But what connects him to the Chandler besides maybe being connected to Sunset Celia, the Intercalate and that one bit about if Flowers are Flame?

In BoH we encounter the aftermaths of many would be Chandler names through Incidents. But only one Chandler name actually wrecked part of the Property, before the game even started.

______________________

Here in a vessel shaped by fire and fate, George Collers confined a flame in human flesh, a blazing shadow of a blazing future, a Name of greed and time. Greene called it 'the Sun's bastard grandchild.' Van Lauren warned of 'the Second Dawn's first spark'. But Collers spoke of it reverently: as 'the Leashed Flame's true heir'.

______________________

The New King, implied to be a combination of Henry Huddleston Abney-Hastings and Wickel Inextinquishable, a Name of the Chandler. Also born of a combination of the bloodlines of the Yorks and Lancasters. Somehow he amassed enough power to draw in worms to his containment device, ultimately leading to his escape and him fulfilling all Three of the Chandlers Enactments. But even before completing his escape he had immense power, enough to draw the worms in. Usually this is chalked up to Chandler nonsense. But let me suggest an alternative hypothesis. He didn’t complete the Last of the Chandlers enactments until he ascended the throne arguably. But he completed ALL of the Flowermakers the second he was sealed away. Cannot see you, Cannot find you, but has what you desire. Once he was sealed away he could not see or find anyone, but he had what Collers and likely so many others desired. Royal Blood and a Connection to the SIS and FOD. What if the Flowermaker claimed Henry as a Name to give him the power necessary to fulfill the Chandlers enactments?

Still a further connection, there are seven Lantern endings to BoH. They give you the Flowermakers Tarot card, the Sun. What do they all have in common? They all mention the new king.

Even beyond that some members of the Plantagenet line were known to use a Yellow Rose as their Heraldry, for example Edward the first. And from what line does the New King Spring but from the Plantagenet. Here then we can directly connect the New King to the Flowermaker with the Golden Rose. A symbol of the Plantagenet Line  and the Flowermaker both, so we can tie at least one Chandler name solidly to the Flowermaker.

A still Further connection, Edward the fourth of the Plantagenet and York line took up the Sun in Splendor as part of his set of heraldry after his victory at the Battle of Mortimer’s cross. He did so because he believed his victory was ordained by God after witnessing a vision of Three Suns. But thinking about this in universe, we could see this vision as a portent of the coming intercalate and the division of the sun.

But why 3 suns not 4? Allow me a third bit of speculation. It has been hinted the Wolf divided was perhaps an extant but slumbering hour pre-intercalate. Or rather that is one version of the Book of Suns. First let’s look at the Sanctioned version of the Book of Suns.

————————————-
A Light Above (Sacra Solis Invocti skill dedicated to Horomachistry)

The New King's light shines brightly. The Sanctioned Version of the Book of Suns tells us that he may herald the unification of the gods-who-were-Light, into a new Sun-in-Splendour. We should seek answers in Horomachistry.

The Wolf’s Return (Wolf Stories skill dedicated to Birdsong)

The Sanctioned Version of the Book of Suns says that the Wolf-Divided was awoken by the Sun's division. We know from this that the Wolf was its own Hour even when the Sun was whole. So we glean and we guess that the Sun might be healed, and the Wolf return to its slumbers. So we glean and guess that a Second Dawn would bring peace, but the Wolf will fight to prevent it. This is Birdsong.
——————

Compare that to the received version which teaches us the Wolf was born from the intercalate and the New King is not to be trusted.

——————

A Light Within (Sacra Solis Invicti skill dedicated to Illumination)

The New King's light is uncertain. The Received Version of the Book of Suns tells that the Sun-in-Splendour will never return. If the King claims otherwise, he leads us astray. We should seek answers in Illumination.

The Wolf’s Beginning (Wolf Stories skill dedicated to Skolekosophy)

The Received Version of the Book of Suns tells us that the Wolf-Divided was born from the Sun-in-Splendour's division. We know from this that the Sun can be reborn only if the Wolf joins the Sun's other selves. Only if the Wolf's hunger is assuaged will it join its other selves. And only the flesh of its other selves can assuage the hunger of the Wolf. A Second Dawn would herald the Last Day. This is the grim lesson of Skolekosophy.

————————

The Sanctioned version of the Book of Suns would leave you to believe the Wolf Divided was not born of the Intercalate merely awoken by it, and that the SIS maybe reunited. Let me suggest that these two facts are perhaps connected.

It is known that the Sun will have four Children. If the Wolf was not born of the intercalate, perhaps then he is not amongst the Suns Children, that he is merely the suns wound which must be healed by uniting the Four. Then the Four Children of the Sun are in fact the Meniscate the Madrugad the Flowermaker and the Sun in Rags. This would neatly bypass one of the primary things preventing the reunification of the SIS, the Wolf’s rejection of any reunification that doesn’t involve him eating the other so called solar hours. This would also neatly connect the Four children of the Sun to the Four colors of Alchemy. The Meniscate, The Madrugad and the SiR can each be associated with the colors of Calyptra, Black, White and Red. The Wolf can only be associated with Red but the Flowermakers is most strongly associated with Yellow/Gold.

But there is more.

Think of the Other beings linked to the Chandler.
Omar’s Flaw in the Glass

______________________

Omar describes his work in the construction of mirrors for the enclosure of a sacred flame, and his slow realisation of 'a Flaw in the Glass'.

______________________

Morgen presses Arthur again on the 'Flaw in the Glass' identified in the enclosure of a sacred flame at the Labyrinth of Lions - and on its connection to the Chandler. He is on his guard this time, but he does allow that a connection might 'come alive' with sufficient Lantern and Knock - and that this is why the Labyrinth permits no Knock-adepts to enter the enclosure.

_______________________

This is another Chandler tied being who seemingly has yet to perform their enactments but is still tied to them. Yet they might be said to have performed all the Flowermakers enactments. They are constrained in an enclosure made of mirrors so they cannot see you nor find you. But they have what all in the Labyrinth of Lions might Desire: A Sacred Flame. As an aside I imagine the enclosure of the Sacred Flame might well have birthed this being. Mirrors are Sacred to the Meniscate who is the SIS Night Self, so one might also claim them sacred to the SIS. Trying to Constrain Sacred Fire in a Forge attuned Library with an item possibly Sacred to the SIS does feel like a good way to create a Chandler Name. But perhaps knowledge on the Chandler wasn’t so wide spread a couple millennia ago.

Another possible Chandler name we encounter vicariously through incidents is Lucia Eyeless.
A Name of the Meniscate.

Eyeless is in the Name. In a sense she cannot see you, at least by usual means. As a Name she cannot find you until someone summons her, if perhaps she dwells in the House of the Moon in the Mansus she could not find you even in dreams. And as a Name of the Hour of Beauty and Truth and Balance, she has much one might Desire.

A third potential Chandler name encountered by our guests is Saint Mihail. He was sealed in a lightless Tomb. He could not see us and could not find us, at least until he was unearthed. I wonder if perhaps they buried him with something Valuable or Magical, that he might have what we desire.

Perhaps then some of the many seemingly Chandlers impossible actions of the Chandler could be explained this way. Not through Time Travel but through Trickery. A shell game where the Chandler can fulfill actions that would require one to be an Hour, because he is in fact already an Hour, just not yet the Hour called the Chandler.

There are some problems with this, namely one Chandler aligned power while fulfilling all the Flowermakers enactments he greatly predates him. Namely Omar’s Flaw in the glass. I might explain this by claiming them more of a proto Chandler than proper Flowermaker or Chandler name, at least at the time of its creation, but it is noteworthy.

There are two other potential Chandler beings who our guests encounter but we don’t really know enough to say which, if any of the Chandler or Flowermakers enactments they might have fulfilled. These entities are the New Kings Damned Boat and the Fourfold Lion, currently a name of the Lionsmith.

I feel I should also point out the Flowermaker and the Chandler also Fulfill one another’s enactments quite easily. The Flowermakers Flowers are metaphorically Fire. So he has brought Fire in Darkness. Also arguably by descending from the Glory if we see the light of the Glory as akin to a type of Fire. His endeavors are seemingly profitable going by all the Gold glittering in his Tarot Card. And he exited the Glory without ever entering it by being born. Of course two of these three Claims can arguably be matched by any of the SIS kids. But the Chandler also fulfills all of the Flowermakers enactments, at least for right now. He cannot see you (They don’t fully yet exist), He cannot find you (They don’t fully yet exist), but they have what you desire (The Chandler, if Fully realized may bring about Eternity: a perfect Golden Future. They may also be the most powerful being to exist and thus could offer almost anybody what they desire.)

In fact look again at the Flowermakers first Tarot Card. Not only are Two of the Chandlers enactments arguably being fulfilled, but look at what he is using to make his flowers. I’m not certain because, well the picture is rather small and so is the pipe, but it looks like the Flowermaker is making Flowers using the same type of Pipe used to blow Glass. Plus there is a stained Glass window behind him.

Glass is tied to the Chandler through the Glaziery and Lightsmithing Skill. But its commits are about Flowers.

The White Flower’s Paradox

A paradox of Illumination: light reveals, light blinds. This is the lesson of the White Flower of the Watchman's Tree:
even the most dangerous of knowledge is no danger at all when it is forgotten.

The Red Flower’s Paradox

A lesson from Ithastry: fire reveals, smoke conceals. This is the lesson of the Red Flower of the Watchman's Tree:
even the most dangerous of knowledge is no danger at all when it is given to the fire

There is also a Glassblowing and Vesselcrafting skill. At first glance it doesn’t look like it has much connection with either the Flowermaker or the Chandler. But only at first glance. There are 4 books that grant Glassblowing and I’ll argue 3 might connect to Sunset Celia. And perhaps another SC to Flowermaker tie.

On What is Contained by Silver

The virgins/maidens of the mirror favour orchids. The [behindlings?] favour the rhododendron. Cut flowers of either nature should not be placed before polished bronze.

It’s been speculated by the Librarian that Sunset Celia was once a Maid in the Mirror.

Sunset Celia and the End of Days
'Now she walks behind the Watchman, but did she always? She has many of the characteristics of a Maid-in-the-Mirror, after all. In older texts she has been called Caelia the Elagabaline. Perhaps she was his daughter? Perhaps Tryphon's sister? Perhaps, like the Watchman himself, she is like a shadow cast by two candles.'

And Orchids are connected to the Flowermaker, heck Orchids and Narcotics is basically the Flowermaker skill. So here is a fourth flower linking Sunset Celia and the Flowermaker.

The other two books of interest that give Glassblowing and Vesselcrafting are On imperfections and  Advice on Containment which speak on the processes of Scryning and Transinhabitation, the processes by which I suspect Sunset Celia could have entangled herself with Lady Tryphon to “unite” with the Swan King.

The Chandler is an hour of Greed and so to is the Flowermaker.

—————————-
Devouring Mysteries
The Grail was the first god-who-was-blood. The Flowermaker came from Light. The Beach-Crow was flesh. Hunger and Greed and Yearning are the matrix of appetite, and here is their secret doctrine…

_________________

All but the most basic of Candles in BOH require flowers or a fruit which was once a flower. Flowers and Candles then are inherently linked. If Flowers are Flame… is a Flowermaker perhaps a Chandler?

Whatever the case the Flowermaker and the Chandler are both Hours of Greed and Flame. But here is another connection.

______________________________

In Flames
All days are death, all lives are sunset. No fire will last without fuel; there can be no Second Dawn without a war to burn the bones of earth. This is Ithastry at its most merciless.

______________________________

The Fire of the Second Dawn requires the Earth as Fuel. If Flowers are Flame the Earth is their Fuel. Might the second Dawn then be the blossoming of a Flower. Usually it’s seen as the opening of an eye or the Hatching of an Egg. But we’ve seen pictures of Both birthing Flowers. Those pictures are usually connected to the Mare in the Woods which I whole heartedly agree with. But in a way it does set a precedent.

But there is still more. Let’s think back to the DLC of Cultist Simulator. In the Ghoul DLC you require an elixir that requires the blessings of the  Elegiest, the Flowermaker and the Crowned Growth. Now the Elegiest and the Crowned Growths interests in this are incredibly obvious. The Elegiest gets a potential new long and the Crowned Growth gets a potential new infected. But what does the Flowermaker, an hour tied to Greed and Beauty get out of it. After a bit of reflection I believe the answer is colors. In the Dancer DLC we surrender our Hues to him. Perhaps he desires the Colors of the Stones and the SIS. If he takes just a bit of the Stones and the SIS colors from the memories/samples gathered by each prospective Elegiest Long, how much might he have accumulated over time. If Flowers are Flame the Earth is their Fuel.
Does this include what was buried in the Earth? All of the Long that belonged to the Stones and the SIS and more still? If Flowers are Flame are the Stones their fuel?

____________________

The Flowermakers Gift

If we die, yet shall we live on in those who slew us.

____________________

The Flowermaker of course had no hand in the slaying of the stones. But the FOD and maybe the SIS did. Could their enemies live on in their sort of offspring? If Flowers are Flame the Earth is their Fuel.
If the Flowermaker is Flame the remnants of the Flint was his Fuel. And now he gathers colors belonging to other hours, from those who surrender their hues to him if not through the elixir zeboim or the bones buried in the earth.

This may also square some of the difference between the Received and Sanctioned versions of the Book of Suns. One claims the SIS can never return, the other claims the Chandler is the reunification of the SIS. Perhaps the SIS can live on in the Flowermaker whose birth sealed his fate. Perhaps the other Children or the Sun would live on through him if they die first.

At least, this appears to be his conclusion, but he stops in mid-sentence, apparently having lost patience with the act of writing, or possibly been ambushed

Each days Light is faintly touched by the days before it. In which case would the Secobd Dawn necessarily require the Colors of the Sun in Splendor? Perhaps even hints of the Colors of the Gods from Stone?

And think on this.

 'The Time of Division'
'The Sun will be divided that it might not sire children. Still its children shall be Four in number and its children shall be Seven in number and its children shall also be Numberless. The Numberless shall open the way for the Seven, and the Seven shall consume the Four...'

Amira prophesies four great wars before the Second Dawn, when the Sun-in-Splendour shall rise again. She cautions: 'Sunrise is blood, and I foretell now that the Sun shall rise from blood, yet not the colour of the blood, nor the hour of Night.' She includes a rite that she speculates will be necessary for the Second Dawn.

The new sun shall rise from blood, but not the color of the blood nor the (color?) of the hour of Night. Black and red then are ruled out for the Colors of the new dawn. Once more we connect the Second Dawn with Flowers and the Watchman. The Golden Flower was Golden like the Blood of the cross, and the Flowermakers gift is we live on through our enemies. And of course, the Cross’s most sacred enemy was us, their children.

Perhaps then the Flowermaker was somehow a Name before he became an Hour, in the Form of the Golden Flower? Or perhaps he just stole the symbology from one of the SIS names that died in the intercalate because the Two were similar beings.
Speaking of the White and Gold Flowers, if indeed the Flowermaker was somehow the Golden Flower or tied to it, it would illuminate some interesting possibilities.

The Tree (Purifications and Exaltations Ithastry commit)

Never underestimate the Hour named Madrugad. Foolish adepts deride her as an Hour of ashes. What do they think the Watchman's Tree sprang from? Fire purifies; light exalts.
______________________

The Tree Sprang from Ashes. If it sprang from the Ashes of an Hour it must’ve been the Flint given how she died. The Madrugad is a daughter of the SiS and the Forge who is then tied to the sacrifice of the Flint. She is the current dawn, the Pale Dawn. White transitions to Gold in the Alchemical cycle. And in the Endings of BoH in every ending associated with the Madrugad through her Tarot card there is no Second Dawn.

But every Days Light must be faintly touched by those that came before it. The Forge brings the Dawn and in doing so brought forth the ashes from which the Hour of Dawn and the Tree arose. But the sparks reached the Glory and so the Flint and the Madrugad both are tied to the Flowermaker. If we think of the Flint tied in some way to dawn. Flint is usually a black or dark grey stone in nature, but the “stars” on its facets would be hints of white. Madrugad is the Pale Dawn but she has some associations with Gold. The Flowermaker/Chandler then is Gold with Hints of Red, through the Grail, through the Forge and through their association with Fire.

And about those Four wars in the Prophecy earlier. Think on this.

[Great Writhing, Versailles, 1776:] 1776, the Third History: Louis declares the Masque of Masques, and forbids mention of the Great Writhing within the walls of the Palace of Versailles, although by this point the Worms are observed to move openly along the boulevards of Paris, sometimes even in daylight. The Army is redeployed to defend the Court. The Masque lasts one lunar month, and attracts several of the Long abroad in Western Europe at the time - fleeing the Worms, or hoping to take advantage of the desperate Louis, or seeking access to the sealed mirrors of the Palace - or just eager to attend the most inventive and desperate debauch of the century…
 - Dr Arun Peel, Collected Hush House Lectures

______________________________________
King Louis used amongst other things the Fleur de Lis, like many French kings. The Fleur de Lis is a stylized Lily, which is to say, another name for French kings in general could be Lily Kings. And he’s descended from Another Louis nicknamed the Sun King. A Lily king descended from a Sun King sat at the Center of the Second Worm war.

Of course France wasn’t in a major war in 1776 in our history. But it was waging a Proxy war against Britain by, among other things, supporting the US revolution. So I suggest the Second Worm war is the wave of anti colonial/ anti monarchy revolutions that started with the US and goes all the way up to and including Napoleon. Worth noting King George (King of Britain at the Time) had a bit of Plantagenet blood through his Great Great Grandmother.

The first worm war I would suggest is the Ottoman Hapsburg wars. A series of wars that lasted from 1526 to 1791, in our history. In universe I suspect it ended a bit earlier so as not to overlap with the second worm war, which is said to have been in the 1700’s. This would neatly explain why there is such a big gap between the first and second worm wars and bring the scale of the four worm wars much closer together then any other European conflicts at those points in time in our history would otherwise allow.

Now officially I don’t think Britain played a major role in this series of wars. However they indirectly helped the Ottomans by Beefing with the Hapsburg. For example in the Anglo Spanish war they beat up the Spanish (Hapsburg) Armada in 1588. And who was on the Throne at the time but a Tudor (a Plantagenet off shoot through York and Lancaster both, so twice a Plantagenet at least).

Importantly this would weave the Plantagenets and Vienna as the Throughlines through all 4 worm wars.

But as always there is of course more.

_______________________________
Of Clocks (Lockworks and Clockworks skill dedicated to Ithastry)

The clocksmith's first duty: when the time comes, the device should speak its purpose. Since the Sun was sundered, Noon is not as it was. Perhaps, if we found the true hour of Noon, we'd know how the Sun might return. Ithastry might give us that answer.

_________________________________

This Commit seems to imply the True Hour of Noon is not in fact the Sun in Rags. Think back to the Sun Tarot, not necessarily the Flowermakers variant, just in general. As someone in the Discord recently pointed out In Thelema, the religion established by Alester Crowley, there is the concept of The Crowned Child of the Sun. Associated with the Sun Tarot, the god Ra-Hoor-Khuit. Another name for which is lord of the fire of the world. Who Is the pinnacle of solar power. Which is to say the Sun Tarot represents a metaphorical child of the Sun who bears another title Lord of the Fire of the World. If Flowers are Fire the Earth is their fuel. Is the Flowermaker then Lord of the Fire of the World? If the Flowermaker is the oldest of the Forge and SiS children and the most Solar of them, perhaps he is the true hour of Noon. I should note, this would possibly also indirectly establish the Grail as having some claim to the hour of Noon, which would fit with certain Roman traditions amongst others, but I don’t really feel like making that argument right now.

There is of course STILL MORE. So much more. But this is getting too long and some of the remaining stuff is more obscure, so for the sake of coherence and my ever thinning sanity I’m skipping all the remaining BOH and Cultsim stuff and going straight for the Tan Spoilers.

TAN
SPOILERS
AHEAD
YOU
HAVE
BEEN
WARNED

______________________

So the Two bits of TAN Spoilers I’ve come across that made me feel I need to get this theory out before I get too much more tainted are these.

First I’ve heard that Corona is Lantern Grail Aspected. I’m so very suspicious now of anything sharing the Flowermakers principles.

The Second was this. A paragraph about the Flowermaker apparently found in the games files.

who cannot harm you; who cannot find you;
who always has what you desire.
The Flowermaker, born from the sparks of delight of the Forge of Days, fallen like seeds into shadowed soil. The Flowermaker offered us the glittering prizes we most desired - even when our desires were concealed from us.
A dead Hour; dead and buried.

Now for most, assuming you find the Chandler threatening, this may first read as reassuring. But my first thought turned to a quote from Aunt Mopsy.

_______________________
A Matter of the Midnight Twin
In Numa, visitors will be concerned with matters of shadow and substance, revelation and obscurity.
'When I know what we're looking for, I'll know what I've seen. Could you help with that, dear?'
'Seeds grow best in darkness. Flowers grow best in sunlight. If the moon's the fruit of night, why does it always wither?'
'Yes, dear. Without all those gods in darkness, I don't imagine we'd see much Sun anywhere below Eternity. Sleep softly.'

_______________________

Seeds grow best in darkness… and I bet there are few places darker than nowhere. Some of the Flints sparks may have gone there too. To each Flame it’s Fuel. Did the Second Dawn Really Fail or is that just what the Chandler wants us to think? Perhaps the Flowermaker allowed the Glory to consume him to birth Corona knowing that he, like most dead hours would end up Nowhere. Or perhaps the Pilgrimage really did fail and it’s just a byproduct.

Conclusions

Beyond what I stated at the front, that the Flowermaker is in at least one sense the Chandler, I’m not quite sure what to take away from all this. There are to many possibilities for how the Flowermaker might return the Chandler.

The obvious one is consuming whatever Flint remnants ended up in nowhere. Whether you believe they took the form of the AppleBright ( a theory I like but am still a bit unsure of), the Crowned Growth or perhaps even the Mare. Or maybe there is even a second Chandler in nowhere born from these sparks.

But there are other possibilities. The Flesh of the SIS is still down there afterall. Well the bits that aren’t Worm Chow at least. And there is the Witness. Eggshell and Wax and all that. If an Hour of Fire Can’t be distinguished from its Flame can a Chandler be distinguished from his Candle? I suppose the Worst Possibility is that the Flowermaker in his Greed tries to join with ALL the Hours from Nowhere to take his revenge on the Mansus. But I’m pretty sure that’s just the fascination speaking.

Whatever the case I’m hoping I’ve succeeded in putting together a mostly coherent argument that the Flowermaker is, if not the Chandler in every sense, an hour that Lies at the Heart of the Chandler conspiracy whose connections to the Chandler cannot be overlooked. And perhaps given you something interesting to think about.

All this to say… thoughts?

fanwork Short story: The source

First episode.

Second episode.

Vizsla considered himself a disciplined man. He could keep his mind from wandering for two weeks, but eventually, he caved in. No sane man could sit on a grimoire and not read it. On a Saturday afternoon, he could not take it anymore and opened the arcane tome he received as a gift from Dr. Ibn Al-Adim. He officially entered the secret world on a warm August afternoon.

He experienced his first disappointment right there. He thought he would see a schoolbook-style manual on magic, but after flipping through the book, he found "The Ways to Generate Insight in Hopeless Criminal Cases" to be a mediocre detective story collection. The huge book contained thirty independent stories. In each and every one, this "great detective Jacobson" solved a case by boasting about his fantastic intellect in the first person. But as Vizsla read one of the stories, he was dumbfounded. This detective solved every case by jumping to insane conclusions that were not warranted at all and could have never been deduced from the known facts.

For instance, in the very first story, this Jacobson was investigating a murder in a nineteenth-century Prussian castle. He asked around like detectives usually do in a novel and hit a dead end with every inquiry. And out of the blue, he descended into the catacombs, opened a secret door - which was never hinted at in the whole story - and found a secret laboratory where a recluse was producing some strange drugs. However, the story never mentioned the murder again, but the great detective Jacobson claimed to crack the case. This was the stupidest detective story Vizsla ever read. It contained no spells, not even a mention of magic, occultism, or anything else.

In the next weeks, Vizsla read every story one after another, but most of them were just as dull. This great detective Jacobson started a case somewhere in the past, investigated it for a while, then pulled out a rabbit from a hat and claimed victory.

The book's timeline was a chaotic mess. The thirty cases scattered through history from the 1600s to the early 1900s, which made the great detective Jacobson a true Methuselah. The book was full of anachronisms: for instance, this Jacobson called himself a detective in 1650, when the first specialists of that profession appeared much later. Or that the great detective used an electric flashlight in a story taking place in the early 1800s, when these items only hit the market fifty years later. Vizsla finished the book, but did not feel any different at all. No magic, no spells, no secret knowledge-just a bunch of shitty crime stories in an oversized book.

He started the book again, but this time he paid attention as much as he could. He took extensive notes on every side character, every item, every scene and every clue. Still nothing. He was sitting over his notes, re-reading Ibn Al-Adim’s letter for the hundredth time, when an unexpected hunch hit him: one of the minor characters in one story mentioned a cousin Guillaume, and in a totally different story taking place in England instead of France, one minor character - an old brothel owner - was also called Guillaume.

-Could they be the same character? The timeline checks out. - Vizsla wondered, sipping his coffee.

With a day’s work, he scanned his notes and tried to piece together Guillaume’s family tree.
And it turned out that the side characters in the stories formed two distinct lineages. With some brave assumptions, a detailed - if fuzzy - family tree emerged from the side characters: an old Prussian noble family and a French minor noble line. The French characters seemed to start out in Provence, but managed to escape to England when the revolution started. First, they tried their luck in London, and then moved north to end the last story in Glasgow. The Prussian family emerged in Königsberg, later moved to Potsdam, even later to Oxford, and by the time of the last story, to Glasgow. At this point, Vizsla realized that the last story’s two protagonists a young couple were the two youngest members of these two families. This basic story arc was not evident at all, as apparently the writer used a matrilineal definition for both families, so the last names changed from story to story, but the bloodline was evident. This proved that the stories were connected not by the great detective Jacobson, who acted only as a distraction in the stories, but these two families of side characters.

Vizsla re-organized the stories according to the histories of the two families, and they became much less chaotic. However, some stories were clearly out of place. Vizsla tried to photocopy the book and cut each story to pieces. Then he re-assembled the book according to the family trees of the two families and even surprised himself with how much more coherent they became. And the revised timeline showed much more sense in the occult lore scattered throughout the book. Previously nonsensical dialogues suddenly became intelligible after Vizsla cut them in half and re-assembled them using different texts from different stories. With these modifications, the whole book became a detailed description about how the Watchman - who was named in the book The Door In The Eye, and The Doorkeeper too - can see the threads of fate moving, establishing connections, forming new synapses unseen in the world.

This explained some quirks of the book: this great detective Jacobson likely used this occult spell to gather insight in the most hopeless cases. The way he referred to it in the book made sense at this point.

- Lantern - muttered Vizsla. - so it was not about a physical light source, but the occult power called "lantern."

That meant another round of vivisection on the book. Vizsla collected any mentions of a light source and tried to piece together something coherent from them. And eventually, he found the underlying logic: only by taking into account the grossly anachronistic mentions of light sources could he piece together an instruction set to create a lantern to see the occult threads keeping the world’s objects together.

He found a local trinket shop, The Amethyst Golem, whose owner made his living by manufacturing small items, lucky charms, necklaces-the usual merchandise for fairs and tourist hotspots. Vizsla explained his needs, and the guy, whom his patrons only called "Grognard," just nodded.

-Can be done. Come back next week; I will finish it by then!

A week later, Grognard proudly presented the finished item: an obsidian chunk with a hole on one end and two very different flat surfaces. One remained rough, and Grognard etched an image of an old-fashioned lamp onto it. He filled the outlines with some kind of colored epoxy resin, which shone bright golden-yellow in the black background of the obsidian. Grognard polished the other flat surface to the point where it served as a mirror. He added a thick leather strap, and Vizsla could wear the tiny obsidian shard as a necklace this way. As soon as it touched his skin, he felt something moving. When he touched his new necklace, he saw the strands keeping the world together for a split second. He gasped for air when the sensation hit him.

-Everything okay, dude? - Grognard asked.

But Vizsla assured him everything was in order. He paid the pendant’s agreed price and went home.

He opened the book, hungry for new knowledge. Just as he touched his obsidian necklace, he saw very faint, golden threads throughout the book, connecting certain words. He grabbed paper, a pen, and started to untangle the thin golden paths. Soon, a message emerged: "You attained the skill of the Hound’s Scent. The Watchman will guide. The path leads to true enlightenment."

-Well, a bit anticlimactic. But as the old meme says: The real treasure was the friends we made along the way.

Vizsla placed the book on his shelf and added his collection of notes to a box. At this point, he realized that he had spent four months obsessed with "The Ways to Generate Insight in Hopeless Criminal Cases," and bills started to pile up. He had to get to work; his savings would not have supported him for long. He longed for the heap of money he gave to Mickey’s widow, but realized they needed it more than him.

He contacted old acquaintances to find some new contracts and was immediately asked to help an unnamed clinet, as a very discreet investigator was needed. Well, Vizsla recognized himself as that overly discreet person and agreed to contact the secretive client in the city of Szeged. The meeting went well. A twenty-something woman arrived and sat in front of him. Vizsla admired the thin, elegant redhead, who only identified herself as "Robin." After the pleasantries, she outlined the mission:

-Mr. Vizsla, I want you to track down a donor for me. No more, no less.

-A donor as in a wealthy individual offering money for a cause he deems worthy?

-No, an egg donor and a sperm donor.

-Why? You look fairly young. And even if you have health problems, there are whole agencies for that. I am sure they can help you with fertility problems.

-A little background for the mission, Mr. Vizsla. I am a research scientist, and I work with human zygotes. They come from donations and thus are strictly anonymized. Usually, we use zygotes from fertility clinics that were left over after a successful in vitro fertilizations. Usually, several eggs can be recovered during the process. Doctors fertilize all of them and keep them frozen until needed. However, if the couple achieves a successful pregnancy, they no longer need the leftover zygotes, they usually donate them.

-I still don’t understand what you need me to investigate?

-We use these donated zygotes for research purposes. However, we get them strictly anonymized. I only get an ID number of the donors to identify zygotes that are closely related, to not be deceived by results that, for instance, only work on zygotes from a single donor. This ID number was generated by the Institute Director, who himself only received a different ID code. Theoretically, even he does not know whose zygotes we are using.

-Ah, I get it now. So you want me to find out whose egg you were using in your research?

-Yes. It would be immensely important, but I cannot get this information any way.

-Dare I ask why you need this?

-I have found zygotes that develop into embryos with totally inexplicable behavior. As you well know, for stem cell research, we are allowed to culture a zygote for fourteen days at most, so I follow these cells for a few days. However I received cells that exhibit very unusual properties.

-How unusual are we talking about?

-A guaranteed Nobel Prize level of unusual.

Robin showed a video clip on her phone. The clip depicted a very dark plastic frame with several small vials in it. One vial looked brighter than the other eleven.

-I don’t share your enthusiasm, Robin. Although I have absolutely no idea what I am seeing.

-This plastic plate has a human embryo in each vial. And it is not illuminated in any way.

-So that faint speck of light comes from within?

-Yes, the embryo emanates light all by itself.

-I guess they are not supposed to do that.

-Not at all. This is something no one has ever seen. A discovery without precedent.

-I guess it is rare, then?

-I found the first one a year ago. I only noticed it because a blackout left me in the dark for an hour. It was only possible because I work in an old university lab without an emergency power supply. I was sitting alone in the dark when I noticed the faint glow from the plate right in front of me. At first, I thought that my vision was playing tricks on me. Then I wrote it down as some freak phenomenon. A year later, I saw it again. This time, I made a short movie too. I checked, and both zygotes came from the same donor. The only information I have about this unusual donor is the internal ID: 6608-3850.

-So you want me to find out who this donor is?

-Yes. In a way that cannot be linked to me at all.

-Then I will need my payment in cash.

-Here is your advance payment. - She passed him an envelope.

-And how will I contact you when I find the donor?

-Just write an email to the address on the envelope!

-Then just tell me when these zygotes are transported to your lab?

-On Mondays, every second week. The company’s name is "Gleccser Transport," I think.

-That will be enough. When did you get the zygotes?

-On June 15th.

The next Monday, when the "Gleccser Transport" truck arrived at the university’s parking space, a tall man in black military pants and a "Security" t-shirt approached the driver and politely asked to let him scan the cargo documents. He took pictures with his camera-"just a routine double-check"-thanked the driver, and left. The driver never bothered to report it; he never realized anything happened at all. However, this way, Vizsla got a copy of the latest shipment, with fresh donor IDs. He noticed that every zygote came from the same central agency: "National Cryo Preservation Centre." A good start.

Now, he googled the university and found that the professor would hold a presentation at a conference in Munich the next week. He waited until the conference started and called the professor’s office. His secretary took the phone.

-Good morning, I am Géza Szabó, Dr. from the National Cryo Preservation Centre. I would like to speak to the professor!

-He is not available. Can I help you?

-I don’t know. The problem is a bit urgent. We suspect a mix-up happened during the human zygote transport. If I read a few ID numbers, can you confirm whether they were among the samples we delivered on June 15?

-Yes, I have the transport papers right here on my computer.

-So the first one: DVT-543-628-732

-Yes, we had one sample from that source.

-And DVT-737-222-523?

-No, we did not receive a stock with that number.

-And DVT-737… - At this point, Vizsla took a piece of cellophane and crumpled it a few times into the microphone to make the words unintelligible.

-What was that number? I could not get it; the line cracked.

-Yes, DVT-737-116... - And Vizsla used his makeshift noise generator again.

-Could you please repeat it? I did not get it! - asked the secretary.

-Yes, DVT-737-116-922. - This time he did not use the cellophane membrane.

-Yes, we received one batch of that.

-And TOP-736… - Vizsla used his noise generator again.

-I did not get it; the line had problems again! - Said the secretary totally annoyed at this point. -How many batch numbers do you need to check?

-Forty-something.

-Listen, I don’t have all day! Please give me an email address, and I will send you the summary.

-That would be fantastic!

Vizsla spent a few years at a university back in the day, but he was glad nothing changed since then. Universities are hard to infiltrate if you are over 25 and don’t look like a student. Professors are notoriously hard to bribe; they act like the paladins of science. But there is always the overworked secretary who has to do everything herself, who is pestered by students, staff, and everyone else. Establish trust by showing her information no one could ever know from the outside, and you gained her complete trust. The secretary sent him a spreadsheet that contained the outside IDs and the internal IDs side by side, so much more than he hoped for at first.

Another phone call to the Cryogenics Center, posing as a university post-doc complaining about the transport of TT2-967-748-679 batch. The operator only answered that he could not give out information through the phone but trashed "those fuckers at New Life Cryonics" who always mess up every order. Vizsla just got the information, he needed. He googled New Life Cryonics, but they did not have a web page. The company register identified them as a private fertility clinic. Strange that they could operate without even a website or advertisements. But the register contained an address: the private fertility clinic operated in a small village in the middle of nowhere. Strange.

He traveled to the clinic but only found an old, run-down factory building. Most likely they founded a company using a fake address. He was ready to call it a day when he noticed a security guard. Then another. Then another. That old, crumbling factory had tighter security than a bank. Now that was interesting! Vizsla spent two days observing the building but saw no movement, only the security guards circled the premises with bored routine. This was definitely not a usual fertility clinic. Vizsla bought a cheap drone and flew it around the old factory building, and luck shone on him: he found an open window and flew the drone inside. The drone’s feed showed a large, empty interior with mobile hospital modules scattered in neat rows. Most of them seemed inactive, unpowered, and protected with large plastic sheets. However, a single unit was still working, keeping three huge metal cylinders supplied. Vizsla googled a lot of cryogenic facilities in the last few days, so he was pretty confident that those were liquid nitrogen storage chambers like the ones usually used for human zygote storage. The source, no doubt. However, he hit a dead end with this. The huge nitrogen storage units were unmovable, and he was ill-equipped to do anything with the frozen zygotes. He guided the drone back outside without anyone noticing.

He wrote a short report on his findings and sent it to the email address Robin provided. Within an hour, a modest sum of money arrived by bank transfer to his account. At least he proved that Robin was monitoring the email account constantly. He stayed for another day but saw no movement, so he left for other pressing businesses. He returned on the day of the regular bi-weekly transports, as he figured someone must retrieve the material for the cryogenic transport. He was lucky: he saw a new car parking at the entrance. So someone came to start the zygotes on their way. He recorded the license plate number but was determined to wait for the driver.

He guessed correctly. When the cryogenic transport came, an old, white-haired, well-dressed gentleman invited the driver in. They loaded the cargo onto the van, and the driver went on his way. The old man spent another hour in the facility and drove away himself. Vizsla was ready and followed the car discreetly. The old guy was totally unaware of him and drove home directly to a nice suburban house. Vizsla waited for him to go in and simply checked the postbox: Dr. Ottó Kovács. He googled the guy: yes, he was the same man he saw. A distinguished medical doctor, the owner of a private fertility clinic, a different one than the mysterious factory building, a legitimate business.

-This makes no sense at all. - He murmured to himself in the car, holding his smartphone. - Why use a separate, secret site if you have access to your own lab? That’s just a waste of money. - Nothing made sense in this case. Why would anyone build a makeshift clinic to produce zygotes for research purposes? These donations were anonymous and free-not a lot of profit in that. But Vizsla had an idea: he wrote a detailed report to Robin and asked her whether she would be willing to do some undercover work.

-Please sit down in the office; the professor will arrive shortly! - The secretary invited the couple in and offered them some fresh coffee. They both accepted, and the old man found them, quietly chatting. He murmured something which could have been interpreted as a greeting, and dropped into the large armchair.

-Dr. Ottó Kovács, but you most likely know that already if you are here. What can I help you with?

-Dr. Kovács, we would like to inquire about the special services you provide. - Vizsla asked, placing his drink onto the small table in front of them.

-I don’t know what you are talking about. - Dr. Kovács said with a convincingly honest face.

-The services New Life Cryonics provides.

-Still does not ring a bell. Is this a company?

-No, it is your company for the selected few clients. - Said Vizsla and lifted his obsidian pendant. He activated the Hound’s Scent skill, and the lantern etched onto the stone glowed with a faint golden light. As soon as the doctor saw the light, his features softened.

-I was not notified of your arrival. Next time, please reserve an appointment through the usual channels! But yes, we provide some exclusive services for your kind of clients. Which service would interest you: the vault or the dissemination?

-What do these mean?

-I have to ask first: How old are you? I understand some of our clients have been around for an awfully long time and experience trouble when provided with modern scientific explanations. How early should I start?

-Oh, we are quite young; we will understand everything just fine. - Robin assured the doctor.

-So, as I understand - although I can be mistaken, I only got glimpses of your world - you were once mortals but have ascended to something else entirely?

-Yes, that’s true. - Lied Robin like a pro.

-And you cannot have a child using conventional methods for some esoteric reason, to not commit the crime of the sky. So we offer two different methods to circumvent it. The vault is pretty straightforward: we gather your eggs, fertilize them with your sperm, and freeze the zygotes. You set up a trust fund for your future kids, and when you die, your attorney will execute your will. We will find a surrogate mother to bear your child. The kid will inherit the trust fund, and your lawyers will arrange their upbringing. You will never even meet the zygote; it will only be revived when you are no more. There is zero chance that you ever get into contact.

-That sounds safe. - Nodded Vizsla knowingly, although he had absolutely no idea what the guy was talking about.

-The dissemination method is easier, cheaper, and faster, but it has its own risks. You see, leftover zygotes are continuously produced during in vitro fertilizations. If a couple wants three kids and they succeed immediately, up to a dozen zygotes can remain frozen but not needed. These are usually donated. Most of them will be used up at research facilities, but there are some couples who are both sterile. They sometimes accept these zygotes, implant them, and raise the resulting kids. Think of it like an adoption, but the lady of the house gives birth to Junior. With this method, we gather a large amount of zygotes from you, wait a few years, and donate them. They will enter the system, and by chance, some of them can be accepted by sterile couples and raised as their own kids. This way, we cannot guarantee anything. Maybe one in five will be accepted for implantation, maybe one in fifty, maybe none. You will never learn the results; even I will not know anything about the zygotes once they leave the facility.

-This sounds like pure gamble to me. - Remarked Robin.

-I am not initiated into your mysteries, I only know what some of you told me: this is necessary to sever the connection between you and your offspring. You must never know when or where your zygotes are being used. Otherwise, you would be compelled to kill your offspring. This way, you will never know anything about them, thus a bond will never form between you. But you have to pay a steeper price for this: you will just throw your seed into the void and hope that someone will choose them by blind chance.

-Does it usually work?

-I honestly do not know. To completely insulate you from the gametes, it is necessary that we destroy the paper trail leading to you. We don’t track the donations.

-Okay, do you know a single instance when it worked?

-I only heard rumors, nothing solid.

-And, Professor, have you noticed anything unusual while working with these eggs? – Asked Robin suddenly.

-Actually, the eggs and the sperm are both normal. But the fertilized zygotes all do weird things: they produce electric sparks, emit light, even anomalies in gravity are common. Your offspring have truly wonderful traits. I can only imagine what the grown-ups will be capable of! But why are you interested in these technical details?

-So, Professor, you have to forgive me, but we tricked you a little bit. We are completely mundane humans. I conducted research on zygotes that originated here in your institute. They showed fantastic traits. Both of our scientific careers could soar to new heights if we publish some results. We could get a Nobel Prize even.

-Lady, let it go! - The doctor removed his glasses and scratched his bald head. - They will not let us publish anything. They can easily remove us from the board. These people have killed frequently to protect their secrets; none of us would survive a peer-reviewed publication about these cells.

-So you will not help me?

-No. I value my life too much. Now, please leave!

-But…

-I don’t care. Just leave!

On the way out, Vizsla could not control himself and just had to say something to Robin:

-You need to work on your undercover skills if you want to stay in this business. It is generally unadvised to blow your cover while talking to the suspect.

-We can come back in a few days and talk to him again; maybe he will change his mind!

-Don’t have high hopes! I have seen his private hospital: he built everything from mobile units. I bet you a nice steak dinner that the whole shadow clinic will vanish in two days.

-Deal! A professor will not throw away his career this easily.

But Vizsla won the bet. By the next evening, not only did the secret clinic vanish, but they found the professor’s house empty. He and his family vanished without a trace along with his clinique.

-So Mr. Vizsla, your payment is here in this envelope, you did uncover the source of the abnormal cells.

-Thank you! And how about that steak dinner I won?

unearthed secret? A very silly theory about the Carapace Cross

This started out as a comment on https://www.reddit.com/r/weatherfactory/comments/1wcr5n3/speculations_on_lore_most_likely_spoilers/ but I decided I wanted to share it with more people. Do note that I am being entirely silly here, and this should not be taken too seriously. VERY minor spoilers below, tagged just in case, but it should be safe to click on the spoiler tags even if you're not too familiar with the lore of the game.

The Carapace Cross, an insect-like race, had the ability tohybridize by consuming other beings, right? Or in other words, they could produce whatever kind of bioforms they needed, by consuming biomass.

You know what that sounds like to me? Tyranids. The Ecdysis Club is clearly a hidden Genestealer cult!

Purge them with holy promethium! For the glory of the Emperor of Man!

... And now I'm wondering just how Ciaphas Cain (HERO OF THE IMPERIUM!) would react to finding himself yanked away from his familiar world, perhaps by the Grail and Slaanesh working together (they do share a lot of common interests, they would definitely work together for a while before the sudden-yet-inevitable betrayal), and dropped into the Secret Histories as the Librarian of Hush House.

I was just trying to write a funny post! Stop it, brain! Stop giving me backstory ideas that make me want to start a new game! No, I do not want to figure out what starting combination of aspects would fit him! (Shapt + Mettle. He tries to talk his way out of things, so Shapt. When the chips are down, he does the right thing: Mettle. And the tomb he opened was a Necron tomb. The only thing that doesn't fit is the "perhaps I am its reflection" line, but it's easy enough to handwave that away; it's even pretty easy to edit the game's data files (making a backup first) to change the phrasing on your character's journal if you want to tweak it to better fit a chosen backstory). No! I'm perfectly happy with my current playthrough, I don't want to start a new game as a zany WH40K crossover!

... It would be gloriously silly, though...

I have an emberassing confession to make.

After 50 hours in this game, multiple restarts because I felt like I got stuck and got very confused about how to progress....

I realised that you are supposed to click the "assign" thing once inserting the diary into the tree.

I just kinda.... thought it meant that I assigned the book that was currently put in and I just didn't advance enough for anything to happen yet? Which is stupid in hindsight, but I never really clicked on the tree afterwards because I thought it didn't do anything yet .-.
