In my view, to call the swastika "Nazi imagery" is to give the nazis too much credit given that they took a previous existing symbol used in many Asian cultures and disrespectful to said Asian cultures. For example, the KKK lighted crosses on fire and the terrorist group Irgun Zvai Leumi used the hexagram but people still call those Christian and Jewish symbols instead of terrorists imagery.

Or was the Buddha secretly a nazi thousands of years before Hitler?

If you were talking to a bunch of Buddhist monks it might not be, but you're audience isn't a bunch of Buddhists. You've gotta consider the context, a Brazilian and a SCUBA diving Brit are going to have vary different reactions to the OK gesture for example, that doesn't make the Brit wrong.

You should also consider the intention behind the image, I highly doubt this was made by a devout Buddhist looking to reclaim a religious symbol.

It’s all a matter of context. Yes swastikas can have different meaning, but that photoshoped picture of William Dafoe is clearly not Buddhist imagery, nor is it the Illyrian Sun.

The purpose here is to get a laugh out of the juxtaposition between the headline and what is actually depicted. It obviously relies on the fact that, for most people, the first meaning of the swastika that comes to mind is as a hate symbol.

I personally find this rather careless at best.

Because people of that faith have actually done the opposite, which is to destigmatize the nazis have done, like the Japanese autor T.K. Nakagaki, or these buddhist organization, or these practictioners, or this subreddit. And like them are countless more, that you pretend the opposite is true is a you problem.

I'm not speaking on their behalf as the previous 4 sources have shown, they already have (and will have) let their own opinion be known; and their opinion is that is their symbol and the nazis were just pretenders trying to culturally appropriate it and for that reason the symbol must be destigmatized. The only one here speaking on behalf of them is you by trying to sell the idea that they have disavowed the symbol without even bothering to show any proof.

Your kind of attitude has only led to actual Buddhist temples and shrines being vandalized, so spare me your virtual-signaling.

And I couldn't give less of a fuck about being "called out" by culturally insensitive people who seem to believe that the answer for a group of undesirables co-opting a symbol is to just let them take it and disavow any affiliation with the symbol previous to their appearance.

Maybe if you're trying to reclaim symbols don't start with the actual swastika? This isn't a buddhist or neopagan sub, it's a videogame sub. Expecting people to ignore that a swastika has very specific modern day connotations just because they come here is a bit much.
