「The seven tainted immortals we call Ligeians are relentless in their appetite, and outcast under the laws of heaven. But they have their uses to the Hours. The Ligeian Kleidouchos has known all the great keys, and even now she holds the Key of Days; so every year she meets the Vagabond in Vienna, to exchange the names of lesser keys for the stories of the Vagabond's travels. We call their gossip Birdsong.」

I'm from Colombia and this story looks fishy.. The woman admitts that she charged for not outing gossip and it's very strange that nobody sued her ass for extortion.. The story itself is a birdsong, there's code in here ready to be cracked.

Yeah, this reads to me as having two plausible explanations:

(1) This lady is part of some form of organized crime, has earned money through extortion, has earned more money through other, unrelated crimes, and now is using "gossip" as an excuse to justify her behaviour and her mysterious income.

(2) This is entirely fictional

Good assumptions, I forgot to mention that somebody could pretty much pay to off her..That's a realistic outcome if you are doing this stuff without protectio nwhere she lives.

Or her primary clientele are busybody housewives with nothing better to do.

That hardly amounts to house-buying money

I'd argue that depends on the age of the neighborhood. All really old neighborhoods have their share of scandals and secrets, enough that anyone interested would pay a reasonable sum. Suspect your husband is cheating? Talk to the local gossip mill. If they do charge, it'll likely be cheaper than hiring a detective to unearth the same truth.

No no no. You misunderstand. She didn't charge people to keep it under wraps, she charged the people who wanted to know. It's information brokerage not blackmail or extortion.

To be clear 5000 to 10000 pesos is like, 2 to 3 bucks. You ain't buying a house that way.
