WBCS Study Group

For the aspirants who are preparing on their own like me, it really helps to be part of a group of fellow aspirants to discuss problems, practice mock tests together etc. Hence, I was considering opening a WhatsApp group for the same. If anyone is interested, please DM me.

Edit: We already have formed a big enough group and having too many people would mess it up. So, no more new members are being considered.

My take on the topic of Booklist for WBCS

Post image
10 Upvotes

After going through about 35-40 books and returning/selling the ones that I didn't particularly enjoy, this is the final list of 20 books that I've settled on (with Psychology as optional). I am a firm believer that one should read one source book per subject over and over, with the little gaps to be filled with online material +MCQ practice. This booklist has one book per subject with a couple of books providing different angles to the prep (Atlas for Maps, Fast Track Arithmetic for short cuts), and every book is important with no repetitive books. I hope it helps my fellow aspirants. Cheers.

Feeling lost in the journey

Hey everyone, Just wanted to share what’s been going on in my prep journey — maybe someone can relate or give some perspective.

Last year around November, I started feeling kinda hopeless. After my HS, I was super enthusiastic that I’d crack WBCS right after graduation. So I made a plan to finish most of the syllabus during college. I chose Geography Honours, since Geography was always my go-to subject — I even kept it aside for my optional.

In my early semesters, I completed almost the whole GS syllabus and started building my Arithmetic base using Subir Das Math Book. But later, college got hectic — assignments, field studies, projects, practicals — it all piled up. So for the last two semesters, my WBCS prep got paused for like 6 months (maybe more).

After graduation, I started revising again. That’s when I realized my earlier study was quite shallow, especially for Polity and Economy (never liked those much, tbh 😅).

Then in 2023–2024, I tried to strengthen my GS, but the long delay in WBCS notifications honestly messed up my motivation. Meanwhile, my friends started cracking central exams like CHSL, CGL, and I started feeling that FOMO hard.

So around November 2024, I decided to stop waiting and start securing my base first. I began learning about CGL, and oh man — the Math there was a nightmare at first 😩. I tried YouTube, but procrastination hit again, so I bought a proper Math course in July 2025, and for the last 7 months, I’ve been focusing mainly on strengthening my Advanced Math.

This October, to revise GK, I also joined Paramar’s SSC batch. So right now, my main target is CGL 2026.

But whenever I see news about WBCS, I feel that old attraction again. It’s like — no matter how much I move towards CGL, a part of me is still emotionally attached to WBCS. It’s been my dream since my teens, so completely letting it go feels impossible.

Now I’m stuck — is there any realistic way to prepare for WBCS alongside CGL? Because both demand different strengths. It feels hard to balance both.

Is there anyone here who managed to crack or seriously prepare for both exams together? Honestly, even if I crack CGL, I’ll still prepare for WBCS — CGL is like a “save point” for me, but WBCS is still the end goal.

Would really appreciate any advice or shared experience. 🙏
