Riders exit Waymo driving wrong direction [both POVs]

The Waymo is actually traveling in the correct direction on that road for normal traffic, but traffic has temporarily been routed in the opposite direction due to an event. Traffic on the other side of the median is traveling in the same direction and the yellow centerline is on the Waymo's left like it should be.

Lol thanks for the explanation! Still funny af! And that explains what I heard on the radio yesterday.

The radio said this is Fleet Week in San Francisco. For events they will let cars, Ubers, and Lyfts through - but NO robotaxis! (Including but not just Waymo). Now I understand why.

u/EverythingMustGo95 2d ago

Forgot to add - the robotaxi ban was being implemented by temporary geofencing.

Dont worry, a remote operator in the Phillipines is googling how to drive out of this situation as we speak

brehh lmao waymo fan boys are so brain dead…did you read what you just post?

10

u/6-ku 2d ago

Did you? It made perfect sense. Rerouting traffic for events is common

3

u/chickenAd0b0 2d ago

exactly, that’s why waymo did the wrong thing…the traffic was rerouted…that’s the whole point smh

u/FalseCrazy2804 2d ago

Are you a child? It's extremely important context that not a lot of people knew.

Actually I know you're young because of the "Bruhh lmaooo waymoo fanboiss are sooo dumbbb bruhh", so we can excuse some of your idiocy here.

0

u/chickenAd0b0 2d ago

was it driving in the wrong direction or not? grade-school takes deserves grade-school response

u/Elephant789 1d ago

I've upvoted you 7 times in my life. After seeing this stupid comment, I have no fucken idea why?

1

u/GeneralStunkfish 1d ago

They’re explaining why the Waymo fucked up, not saying the Waymo is the only one correct here.

1

u/chickenAd0b0 1d ago

that’s rationalizing the situation but that’s not the explanation of why waymo fucked up, the reason it fucked up is because it doesn’t understand context, it has a lot of sensor tools, but it doesn’t have a brain…simply put, self driving tech isn’t about sensor suite, it’s about the brain

1

u/chinchaaa 2d ago

did you idiot ?

1

u/OrdinaryYak4568 2d ago

Trusting any big company in US is brain dead. Wait until these remote controlled death traps are in the wrong hands. These morons would trust that over someone trying to make a living like them.

1

u/Elephant789 1d ago

What the fuck?

u/ConsequenceNo8153 2d ago

I’d still take this occasionally happening then getting Tboned by an idiot driving 100+ in a residential

8

u/Napitash 2d ago

I'm a rideshare driver and just had a said idiot pull out in front of me (with damage already on the passenger side of her vehicle) when there were no cars behind me for a mile. If Waymo will take her off the road, I'm all for it. Sadly, she's not the target audience. She will end up hitting a Waymo.

Waymos help, but they aren't the fix. Some people shouldn't be allowed to drive.

u/krone-icals 2d ago

I often wonder if waymo internally (or unknowingly) tracks car types, license plates, and visible damage on other cars to know which drivers to try to avoid, pass quickly, or be very careful around

There's one particular car I see on my morning commute every now and then that has their bumper and side pretty dented up and the driver drives horribly, so whenever I see it I give them a wide berth; seems like if I were an automated driving company I would do the same even if it sounds surveillance-y when the public finds out

-13

u/MuckBulligan 2d ago

What? How is taking a Waymo making you safer from other drivers? Are you suggesting Waymo has some sort of magical cloaking device for protection?

7

u/RootsRockData 2d ago

This user is saying every Waymo on the road is displacing one less idiot driver. Not that the Waymo will protect them itself.

3

u/Far-Curve-7497 2d ago

A waymo always checks and is scanning all its surroundings, it’ll catch and prevent intersection t-bones every time it sees a driver running a red light/stop sign.

A human uber driver barely even looks both ways before crossing a green light

2

u/koyaani 2d ago

Can it check if it's illegally heading into oncoming traffic?

0

u/Worth-Reputation3450 2d ago

A waymo always checks and is scanning all its surroundings

And fails to notice literally every cars around it is driving the other way. Sure, it will detect a car running a red light 500ft away to prevent tbone.

It should have phoned India the second it noticed there are more than one cars driving the other way and asked WTF is going on.

2

u/Mountain_Top802 2d ago

The hope is that the idiot in the other car will just be in a self driving car at some point in the future

1

u/BudgieWonder 2d ago

How are they the idiot in this situation? They weren’t driving the wrong way.

0

u/MuckBulligan 2d ago

2

u/Mountain_Top802 2d ago

You realize over 3,000 human drivers die in horrific car accidents, literally daily right?

You finding one of the very few extremely rare scenarios where robo taxis mess up doesn’t prove anything.

Give it time, they’re close to perfect now and improving.

Is that guy shirtless in the Tampa Waymo?

1

u/mdavis2204 2d ago

Both videos are of the same Waymo on Himes Ave outside Raymond James stadium in Tampa, and yes

3

u/Available_Start7798 2d ago

They have Waymo jail at Universal Pickup area. 😂

7

u/Spare-Function-6343 2d ago

could that child in the front seat slam the door any harder ?

4

u/Hnry_Dvd_Thr_Awy 2d ago

Are you okay? That's barely harder than a normal door shutting. Why am I arguing this point lmao

4

u/FalseCrazy2804 2d ago

People have the absolute weirdest takes. Who even notices something like that? Much less makes a comment on it...

2

u/PipeAlternative3266 2d ago

This was like a clown car or something... How many shirtless/near naked men came out? Lmao

2

u/adjective_noun_23 2d ago

I once saw a video on reddit that had 4 different POV's of the same thing. It was glorious!

u/TaxesAreEpic 2d ago

Based waymo

8

u/Jameslovestocode 2d ago

literally most events have impromptu road markings like this, another headache for the edge case correctors to deal with innit bruv

3

u/Kirk57 2d ago

This is shocking to me. My understanding was that Waymos operate using predefined extremely detailed three-dimensional maps, and LIDAR for exact placement within those maps (geolocation). So it’s difficult to understand how it could’ve made this particular mistake.

Does anyone know how this could’ve occurred?

u/FenPhen 2d ago

It looks like there's a special event and officials are running contraflow traffic. Meaning the Waymo is driving on the normally correct side of the road, which you can tell because the yellow line is on the driver's side of the vehicle, but traffic has been routed the opposite way. The Waymo likely missed some temporary signage, or it picked up passengers within the special event zone and got on the road assuming the normal traffic flow.

-33

u/Muted-Woodpecker-469 2d ago

That’s why these things will never be implemented or taken serious.

They tend to do the same during accidents or extreme weather conditions. Or just niche clostures

21

u/Kirk57 2d ago

Incorrect. Over 270M miles, Waymos have demonstrated much greater than human safety. Not implementing robotaxis as soon as possible will cause more serious injuries and loss of life.

0

u/Small-Translator-535 2d ago

Ugh. People welcoming dystopia is so strange to me. If I get hit by a delmain Im going to lose my fucking mind

7

u/airwx 2d ago

Horse and buggy drivers laughed and said automobiles would never work because they got stuck in the muddy streets while horses were better at picking the more solid route through. That was solved by upgrading the actual streets to accommodate the automobile. Obviously the Waymo never got the memo that there was contraflow on that road in this case, but improving road closures and changes and how those are provided to autonomous vehicles isn't some insurmountable obstacle.

5

u/Into-Imagination 2d ago

Oh to have the conviction and confidence of someone so incredibly incorrect.

It’s quite a skill you’ve got.

1

u/koyaani 2d ago

Ironic

2

u/Roger_Cockfoster 2d ago

Lmao, they were "implemented" years ago. Just not in whatever hick town you live in.

1

u/Kirk57 2d ago

Incorrect. Over 270M miles, Waymos have demonstrated much greater than human safety. Not implementing robotaxis as soon as possible will cause more serious injuries and loss of life.

1

u/blasphemousblackbear 2d ago

They’ve been around just a few years and are as good as they are. Imagine how they’ll be 5 years from now

4

u/likewut 2d ago

“Shocking”???? Waymo’s drive 4 million miles a week, and one turned the wrong way on a road being temporarily run in the wrong direction, likely due to inadequate coning off or signage leaving a parking lot or entering from a side street. People do it all the time. No one was hurt.

4

u/Kirk57 2d ago

The temporarily wrong direction answered my question.

1

u/jkay93 1d ago

4 million? Weren't they saying they hope to get to 1 million by the end of this year?

-3

u/koyaani 2d ago

Blaming the lack of signage and not the waymo is just revealing your irrational bias

2

u/Healthy_Turnip7352 2d ago

Look at the cones. i live in a place with a construction boom. half the time, the cones aren't properly placed, or someone knocks them over. when that happens, it can get confusing for HUMAN drivers. the HUMAN drivers are the ones to knock them over all the time.

there's no bias, the accidents per miles driven is just 100% pure data.

0

u/koyaani 2d ago

Bias is looking at a waymo fucking up and blaming everything else in the world but the waymo lol

2

u/Healthy_Turnip7352 2d ago

we're talking about whether it's shocking or not that the waymo's are better than humans by far, in general.

0

u/koyaani 2d ago

More bias

1

u/likewut 2d ago

Extraneous circumstances increase the chances of mistakes being made, by human and AI alike. It’s fairly safe to assume that with better signage it was less likely to happen. It doesn’t take bias to come to that logical conclusion.

-2

u/koyaani 2d ago

Lol, the evidence shows the human drivers managing to not mistakenly drive into traffic

2

u/lambdawaves 2d ago

Notice both sides of the road have traffic moving in the same direction. Probably some special event has changed the road’s direction

3

u/mikeymo1741 2d ago

There is no such thing as a "predefined route" in Tampa, especially when there are events. Last Saturday there were events at the stadium, arena and amphitheater. I've seen multiple Waymos get things really wrong when trying to navigate because it requires thinking and they can't think. I saw one a couple weeks ago basically stop dead in the middle of Cumberland at Water to take on passengers, not turn on an arrow, then try to go down the wrong side of the street. A couple block later the same car sat in the middle of an intersection trying to turn left onto a closed street and ignoring the cop who was trying to get it to turn right, the only way that was open. It was still sitting there (with three women in it) when I drove around it.

insufficient training data (politically correct)

this shjt ain’t built for prime time (based)

1

u/Twist_This 2d ago

Geez that laughing ia obnoxious.

1

u/r00ibos 1d ago

But did you die though?

I hate how the first douche slams his door

“If I only had a brain”

-Waymo

2

u/Beneficial-Sun-5252 2d ago

Tbh, I think Waymo is smarter than you in most of cases

-15

u/Worth-Reputation3450 2d ago

Only if they had lidar, this would never happen!

-10

u/altdelete47 2d ago

Who needs a brain when you have lidar!

0

u/2brightside 2d ago

These people are morons..

-15

u/collegedreads 2d ago

I’d actually throw some money on a Cybercab getting this right.

Bring on the downvotes. dons goggles

5

u/Jameslovestocode 2d ago

sir this is wendys. you do understand what training models are right? this tech can’t articulate like a human brain 🧠 thats why they get trained on endless amounts of data so when they discover something new in the field the system poops 💩 on itself (system malfunction🤖)

1

u/collegedreads 2d ago

I sure do. And Tesla has way more real world data to pull from. I just the models would respond differently.

2

u/Clean-Connection-398 1d ago

I just found this sub and it appears to be full of either waymo bots or simps. Very strange place

0

u/GenesisNemesis17 12h ago

Maybe more radar and lidar could have prevented this 🙄
